About This Text
Composed: Talmudic Babylon, c.450 – c.550 CE
Tractate Chagigah (“Festival Offering”) is located in Seder Moed (“the Order of Festivals”) and addresses the commandment to make a pilgrimage to the Temple on the holidays of Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot. The tractate focuses on the sacrifices offered then and the ritual purity required of those who visit the Temple. Chagigah also includes long digressions with esoteric interpretations of the biblical stories of creation in the Book of Genesis and the divine chariot in the Book of Ezekiel.
