About This Text
Author: Isaac ben Moses HaLevi (Efodi)
The Efodi commentary on Maimonides’ Guide for the Perplexed was written by Rabbi Isaac ben Moses HaLevi, a 14th-century Spanish converso whose assumed Christian name, Profiat Duran, provided the basis for the Hebrew acronym, Efod, by which he is known. Unlike other commentators, who often wrote at length and attempted to solve philosophical problems and contradictions within the Guide, the Efodi is noted for its brevity and its focus on clarifying rather than analyzing the text.
