About This Text
Composed: Talmudic Babylon, c.450 – c.550 CE
Horayot (“Decisions”) is the last tractate in Seder Nezikin (“Order of Damages"). Its three chapters discuss erroneous rulings of the court, inadvertent sins of kings, High Priests, or political leaders, and the sacrifices brought as atonement. The conclusion of the tractate addresses the statuses of various members of the Jewish people and how to prioritize them when necessary. Horayat is the shortest tractate in the Talmud that has commentary on the entirety of the Mishnah, at just 13 folio.
