נ Nun, the fourteenth letter of the alphabet. It interchanges with מ q. v.; with ל, q. v.; with ר, cmp. זָרַח a. דְּנַח; שְׁנַיִם a. תְּרֵין; with י as preformative letter, cmp. יצב a. נצב.—נ frequently inserted, a) in place of Dagesh forte, e. g. מַנְדַּע = מַדַּע; מִנְדְּרוֹן = מִדְּרוֹן;—b) to avoid a hiatus, as אִינְהוּ, נִינְהוּ &c.—ָן, ַן, נָא—afformative, e. g. גַּזְלָן, גַּזְלָנָא.—ן, Nun emphaticum, as אוֹרַיְיתִין = אוֹרַיְיתִי; esp. epenthetic Nun between verb and suffix, e. g. בְּרָאנוּן, Targ.
