About This Text
Author: Shimon Lavi
Composed: Tripoli, Libya, c.1561 – c.1571 CE
Ketem Paz is an extensive commentary on the Zohar, extant only on the book of Genesis. Authored by Rabbi Shimon (ibn) Lavi, a leader of 16th-century Libyan Jewry, it is marked by independence from the influential kabbalistic schools of Safed, instead demonstrating influence of earlier Spanish kabbalah as well as philosophy. Central features include philosophical terminology and metaphorical interpretations, and his view of Zohar study as a path to meditation on God.
