About This Text
Author: Rashbam
Composed: Middle-Age France, c.1120 – c.1160 CE
Commentary written by Rabbi Shmuel ben Meir, Rashbam (France, c.1080 - c.1160). Rashbam, a grandson of Rashi, was part of the Tosafist school. Whereas Rashi famously claimed that his commentary would present the pshat (contextual meaning) of the text, when in reality it relies heavily on midrash; Rashbam’s commentary actually stays very loyal to the pshat.
