א. מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ עַזּוּת, בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁעָבַר עֲבֵרָה לְהַכְעִיס. One who turns arrogant clearly sinned on purpose in the past.
ב. עַזּוּת בָּא עַל יְדֵי כַּעַס. Anger brings to arrogance.
ג. עַל יְדֵי עַזּוּת לֹא יְקַבֵּל מוּסָר. An arrogant person will not accept rebuke.
ד. עַל יְדֵי עַזּוּת נַעֲשֶׂה אַבִּיר לֵב,. גַּם בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁעֲדַיִן לֹא תִּקֵּן פִּשְׁעֵי אָבִיו. Arrogance hardens a person’s heart, and clearly he has yet to rectify his ancestors’ sins.
ה. מִי שֶּׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ עַזּוּת, תִּקּוּנוֹ שֶׁיַּנִּיחַ תְּפִלִּין, שֶׁהָיוּ עַל רֹאשׁ צַדִּיק. One can remedy one’s arrogance by wearing tefilin that were on the head of a Tzaddik.
ו. כְּשֶׁרָשָׁע מֵעֵז בִּפְנֵי יָשָׁר, אֵין זֶה אֶלָּא כְּדֵי שֶׁהַיָּשָׁר יְפַשְׁפֵּשׁ בְּמַעֲשַׂיו. A devout person is made the object of a wicked man’s disrespect only so that the devout person should scrutinize his own behavior.
ז. מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ עַזּוּת, בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁאֵינוֹ מִסְתַּפֵּק בְּמַה שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ. A person who is arrogant clearly is never satisfied with his lot.
ח. הַתּוֹרָה הִיא תִּקּוּן לְעַזּוּת. Torah study is a rectification for arrogance.
ט. עַל יְדֵי עַזּוּת גְּשָׁמִים נֶעֱצָרִים, וּבְיָדוּעַ שֶׁנִּכְשַׁל בַּעֲבֵרָה, וְסוֹפוֹ שֶׁיִּכָּשֵׁל בַּעֲבֵרָה, וּמֻתָּר לִקְרוֹתוֹ רָשָׁע, וּמֻתָּר לִשְׂנֹאתוֹ, וְהוּא אֶחָד מתתקע"ד דּוֹרוֹת. A person’s arrogance causes drought. Clearly, he has sinned in the past and will do so again. One is permitted to call him wicked and to despise him. His soul is from the 974 generations [that existed before the world was created].
י. חֻצְפָּה אֲפִלּוּ כְּלַפֵּי שְׁמַיָּא מְהַנֵּי, וְהוּא מַלְכוּתָא בְּלָא תַּגָּא. Disrespect, even towards Heaven, helps a person get his way. Yet, arrogance is like a “king with no crown.”
