Prayers Said Upon Entering the Sukkah
עוּלוּ אוּשְׁפִּיזִין עִילָּאִין קַדִּישִׁין Enter, esteemed holy guests,
עֽוּלוּ אֲבָהָן עִילָּאִין קַדִּישִׁין come in, esteemed holy Patriarchs,
לְמֵיתַב בְּצִלָּא to sit in the shade
דִמְ֒הֵימְ֒נוּתָא עִלָּאָה of sublime faithfulness,
בְּצִלָּא דְקֻדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא. in the shade of the Holy One, blessed is He.
לֵעוֹל אַבְרָהָם וְעִמֵּהּ Enter Abraham, and with him
יִצְחָק וְיַעֲקֹב משֶׁה Isaac, Jacob, Moses,
וְאַהֲרֹן יוֹסֵף וְדָוִד: Aaron, Joseph and David.
הֲרֵינִי מוּכָן וּמְ֒זֻמָּן Behold, I am prepared and ready
לְקַיֵם מִצְוַת סֻכָּה to perform the mitzvah [to sit in the] sukkah,
כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוַּֽנִי הַבּוֹרֵא as I was commanded by the Creator,
יִתְבָּרַךְ שְׁמוֹ blessed is His Name:
בַּסֻּכֹּת תֵּשְׁ֒בוּ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים “In sukkos you shall dwell seven days;
כָּל־הָאֶזְרָח בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל every born Israelite
יֵשְׁ֒בוּ בַּסֻּכֹּת shall dwell in sukkos,
לְמַֽעַן יֵדְ֒עוּ דֹרֹתֵיכֶם in order that your generations may know
כִּי בַסֻּכּוֹת that in sukkos,
הוֹשַֽׁבְתִּי אֶת־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל I caused the Children of Israel to dwell
בְּהוֹצִיאִי אוֹתָם מֵאֶֽרֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם when I took them out of the land of Egypt.”
תִּיבוּ תִּיבוּ אוּשְׁפִּיזִין עִלָּאִין Be seated, be seated, esteemed guests,
תִּיבוּ תִּיבוּ אוּשְׁפִּיזִין קַדִּישִׁין be seated, be seated, holy guests,
תִּיבוּ תִּיבוּ be seated, be seated,
אוּשְׁפִּיזִין דִמְ֒הֵימְ֒נוּתָא guests of faithfulness,
בְּצִלָּא [be seated] in the shade
דְקֻדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא of the Holy One, blessed is He.
זַכָּאָה חֻלְקָֽנָא Worthy is our portion,
וְזַכָּאָה חֻלְקֵיהוֹן דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל and worthy is the portion of Israel,
דִּכְ֒תִיב as it is written:
כִּי חֵֽלֶק יְהֹוָה עַמּוֹ “For Adonoy's portion is His people;
יַעֲקֹב חֶֽבֶל נַחֲלָתוֹ: Jacob, the lot of His inheritance.”
לְשֵׁם יִחוּד For the sake of the unity
קֻדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא of the Holy One, blessed is He,
וּשְׁ֒כִינְתֵּהּ and His Presence,
לְיַחֲדָא שֵׁם י"ה בְּו"ה to unify the Name Yud-Kay with Vov-Kay
בְּיִחוּדָא שְׁלִים in complete unity
עַל יְדֵי הַהוּא טָמִיר וְנֶעְלָם through Him Who is Most Hidden,
בְּשֵׁם כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל: in the name of all Israel.
וִיהִי נֹֽעַם אֲדֹנָי אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ May the pleasantness of my Master, our God,
עָלֵֽינוּ be upon us,
וּמַעֲשֵׂה יָדֵֽינוּ כּוֹנְ֒נָה עָלֵֽינוּ. and the work of our hands establish for us;
וּמַעֲשֵׂה יָדֵֽינוּ כּוֹנְ֒נֵֽהוּ: and the work of our hands may He establish.
יְהִי רָצוֹן מִלְּ֒פָנֶֽיךָ May it be Your will,
יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ Adonoy, our God, and the God of our fathers,
שֶׁתַּשְׁרֶה שְׁכִינָתְ֒ךָ בֵּינֵֽינוּ to cause Your Presence to dwell among us;
וְתִפְרוֹשׂ עָלֵֽינוּ סֻכַּת שְׁלוֹמֶֽךָ and spread over us the shelter of Your peace
בִּזְ֒כוּת מִצְוַת סֻכָּה in the merit of the mitzvah of sukkah
שֶׁאָֽנוּ מְקַיְּ֒מִין לְיַחֲדָא שְׁמָא that we are performing, to unify the Name of
דְקֻדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא וּשְׁ֒כִינְ֒תֵּהּ the Holy One, blessed is He and His Presence,
בִּדְ֒חִילוּ וּרְ֒חִימוּ לְיַחֲדָא שֵׁם with reverence and love, to unify the Name
י"ה בְּו"ה בְּיִחוּדָא שְׁלִים Yud-Kay with Vov-Kay in complete unity,
בְּשֵׁם כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל in the name of all Israel;
וּלְ֒הַקִּיף אוֹתָֽנוּ and to surround us
מִזִּיו כְּבוֹדָךְ with the splendor of Your honor,
הַקָּדוֹשׁ וְהַטָּהוֹר holy and pure,
נָטוּי עַל רָאשֵׁיהֶם מִלְּ֒מָֽעְלָה spread over their [our] heads from above
כְּנֶֽשֶׁר יָעִיר קִנּוֹ as an eagle arousing its nestlings;
וּמִשָׁם and from there [may there be,]
יֻשְׁפַּע שֶֽׁפַע הַחַיִּים לְעַבְדְּךָ bountiful outpourings of life for Your servant
(פב"פ) (son of),
אֲמָתֶֽךָ. Your handmaid.
וּבִזְ֒כוּת צֵאתִי מִבֵּיתִי הַחֽוּצָה And in the merit of my leaving my house, to go out [into the sukkah],
וְדֶֽרֶךְ מִצְוֹתֶֽיךָ and the path of Your commandments,
אָרֽוּצָה I will eagerly follow,
יֵחָשֶׁב־לִי זֹאת may this be considered for me
כְּאִלּוּ הִרְחַֽקְתִּי נְדוֹד as though I have wandered far off [in exile].
וְהֶֽרֶב כַּבְּ֒סֵֽנִי מֵעֲוֹנִי Cleanse me thoroughly from my iniquity,
וּמֵחַטָּאתִי טַהֲרֵֽנִי. and from my sin, purify me.
וּמֵאוּשְׁפִּיזִין עִלָּאִין From the exalted guests,
אוּשְׁפִּיזִין דִּמְ֒הֵימְ֒נוּתָא the guests of faithfulness,
תִּהְיֶֽינָה אָזְנֶֽיךָ קַשֻּׁבוֹת may Your ears hear
רַב בְּרָכוֹת bountiful blessings.
וְלָרְ֒עֵבִים גַּם צְמֵאִים To the hungry and thirsty,
תֵּן לַחְמָם וּמֵימָם give them their food and their water
הַנֶּאֱמָנִים in a reliable manner.
וְתִתֶּן־לִי זְכוּת Grant me the privilege
לָשֶֽׁבֶת וְלַחֲסוֹת to dwell and take refuge
בְּסֵֽתֶר צֵל כְּנָפֶֽיךָ in the sheltering shadow of Your wings—
בְּעֵת פְּטִירָתִי מִן הָעוֹלָם at the time I leave this world—
וְלַחֲסוֹת מִזֶּֽרֶם to take refuge from the stream [of fire]
וּמִמָּטָר and from the rain [of fiery coals]
כִּי תַמְטִיר עַל רְשָׁעִים פַּחִים. when You rain snare-traps upon the wicked.
וּתְ֒הֵא חֲשׁוּבָה May it be considered—
מִצְוַת סֻכָּה זוֹ שֶׁאֲנִי מְקַיֵּם the mitzvah of sukkah that I perform—
כְּאִלּוּ קִיַּמְתִּֽיהָ as though I had fulfilled it
בְּכָל־פְּרָטֶֽיהָ וְדִקְדּוּקֶֽיהָ וּתְ֒נָאֶֽיהָ in all its particulars, exactness, specifications,
וְכָל־מִצְוֹת הַתְּ֒לוּיִם בָּהּ and all the mitzvos dependent on it.
וְתֵיטִיב לָֽנוּ הַחֲתִימָה May it be for our good when You seal [the judgements of Rosh Hashanah —Yom Kippur,]
וּתְזַכֵּֽנוּ and may we be privileged
לֵישֵׁב יָמִים רַבִּים עַל הָאֲדָמָה to dwell many days upon the land,
אַדְ֒מַת קֹֽדֶשׁ the Holy Land,
בַּעֲבוֹדָתְ֒ךָ וּבְ֒יִרְאָתֶֽךָ in Your service and in Your reverence.
בָּרוּךְ יְהֹוָה לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן: Blessed is Adonoy forever, amein and amein.
אֲזַמֵּן לִסְעוּדָתִי I invite to my meal
אוּשְׁפִּיזִין עִלָּאִין the exalted guests:
אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק יַעֲקֹב Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,
משֶׁה אַהֲרֹן יוֹסֵף וְדָוִד: Moses, Aaron, Joseph and David.
יום ראשון: On the first day say:
בְּמָטוּ מִנָּךְ I beg of you,
אַבְרָהָם אוּשְׁפִּיזִי עִלָּאָה Abraham, my esteemed guest,
דְּיַתְ֒בֵי עִמִּי וְעִמָּךְ may there be seated with me and with you—
כָּל־אוּשְׁפִּיזֵי עִלָּאֵי all the other esteemed guests—
יִצְחָק יַעֲקֹב משֶׁה Isaac, Jacob, Moses,
אַהֲרֹן יוֹסֵף וְדָוִד: Aaron, Joseph, and David.
יום שני: On the second day say:
בְּמָטוּ מִנָּךְ I beg of you,
יִצְחָק אוּשְׁפִּיזִי עִלָּאָה Isaac, my esteemed guest,
דְּיַתְ֒בֵי עִמִּי וְעִמָּךְ may there be seated with me and with you—
כָּל־אוּשְׁפִּיזֵי עִלָּאֵי all the other esteemed guests—
אַבְרָהָם יַעֲקֹב משֶׁה Abraham, Jacob, Moses,
אַהֲרֹן יוֹסֵף וְדָוִד: Aaron, Joseph, and David.
יום שלישי: On the third day say:
בְּמָטוּ מִנָּךְ I beg of you,
יַעֲקֹב אוּשְׁפִּיזִי עִלָּאָה Jacob, my esteemed guest,
דְּיַתְ֒בֵי עִמִּי וְעִמָּךְ may there be seated with me and with you—
כָּל־אוּשְׁפִּיזֵי עִלָּאֵי all the other esteemed guests—

יום רביעי On the fourth day say:
בְּמָטוּ מִנָּךְ I beg of you,
משֶׁה אוּשְׁפִּיזִי עִלָּאָה Moses, my esteemed guest,
דְּיַתְ֒בֵי עִמִּי וְעִמָּךְ may there be seated with me and with you—
כָּל־אוּשְׁפִּיזֵי עִלָּאָה all the other esteemed guests—
אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק יַעֲקֹב Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,
אַהֲרֹן יוֹסֵף וְדָוִד: Aaron, Joseph and David.
יום חמישי On the fifth day say:
בְּמָטוּ מִנָּךְ I beg of you,
אַהֲרֹן אוּשְׁפִּיזִי עִלָּאָה Aaron, my esteemed guest,
דְּיַתְ֒בֵי עִמִּי וְעִמָּךְ may there be seated with me and with you—
כָּל־אוּשְׁפִּיזֵי עִלָּאֵי all the other esteemed guests—
אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק יַעֲקֹב Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,
משֶׁה יוֹסֵף וְדָוִד: Moses, Joseph and David.
יום שישי: On the sixth day say:
בְּמָטוּ מִנָּךְ I beg of you,
יוֹסֵף אוּשְׁפִּיזִי עִלָּאָה Joseph, my esteemed guest,
דְּיַתְ֒בֵי עִמִּי וְעִמָּךְ may there be seated with me and with you—
כָּל־אוּשְׁפִּיזֵי עִלָּאֵי all the other esteemed guests—
אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק יַעֲקֹב Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,
משֶׁה אַהֲרֹן וְדָוִד: Moses, Aaron and David.
יום שביעי: On the seventh day say:
בְּמָטוּ מִנָּךְ I beg of you,
דָּוִד אוּשְׁפִּיזִי עִלָּאָה David, my esteemed guest,
דְּיַתְ֒בֵי עִמִּי וְעִמָּךְ may there be seated with me and with you—
כָּל־אוּשְׁפִּיזֵי עִלָּאֵי all the other esteemed guests—
אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק יַעֲקֹב Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,
משֶׁה אַהֲרֹן וְיוֹסֵף: Moses, Aaron and Joseph.
רִבּוֹן כָּל הָעוֹלָמִים Master of all the worlds,
יְהִי רָצוֹן מִלְּ֒פָנֶֽיךָ may it be Your will
שֶׁתְּ֒הֵא חֲשׁוּבָה לְפָנֶֽיךָ to consider before You—
מִצְוַת יְשִׁיבַת סֻכָּה זוֹ this mitzvah of sitting in the sukkah
כְּאִלּוּ קִיַּמְתִּֽיהָ as though I had fulfilled it
בְּכָל־פְּרָטֶֽיהָ וְדִקְדּוּקֶֽיהָ in all of its particulars and exactness,
וְתַּרְיַ"ג מִצְוֹת and the six hundred thirteen mitzvos
הַתְּ֒לוּיִם בָּהּ dependent on it;
כְּאִלּוּ כִּוַּֽנְתִּי as though I had in mind
בְּכָל הַכַּוָּנוֹת all the intended purposes
שֶׁכִּוְּנוּ בָּהּ that were intended therein
אַנְשֵׁי כְּנֶֽסֶת הַגְּ֒דוֹלָה: by the Men of the Great Assembly.
