About This Text
Author: Shneur Zalman of Liadi
Composed: Belarus, c.1795 – c.1805 CE
The Shulchan Arukh HaRav is an 18th-century legal code used by many Chasidic Jews as a basis for daily practice. It was written by Rabbi Shneur Zalman, the alter (elder) rebbe of Chabad, after his teacher, Rabbi Dov Ber (the maggid) of Mezeritch, asked him to write a concise, conclusive, and accessible version of the 16th-century Shulchan Arukh for contemporary Chasidic Jews. It is considered an authoritative legal text outside Chasidic circles as well. Much of the original text of Shulchan Arukh HaRav was destroyed in a fire, and only about a third of the original remains.
