Verses:Where Broadway and Torah meet source sheet for connecting counting the Omer and "Seasons of Love" from Rent.

    (15) And from the day on which you bring the sheaf of elevation offering—the day after the sabbath—you shall count off seven weeks. They must be complete: (16) you must count until the day after the seventh week—fifty days; then you shall bring an offering of new grain to יהוה.
  2. (ט) שִׁבְעָ֥ה שָׁבֻעֹ֖ת תִּסְפׇּר־לָ֑ךְ מֵהָחֵ֤ל חֶרְמֵשׁ֙ בַּקָּמָ֔ה תָּחֵ֣ל לִסְפֹּ֔ר שִׁבְעָ֖ה שָׁבֻעֽוֹת׃ (י) וְעָשִׂ֜יתָ חַ֤ג שָׁבֻעוֹת֙ לַיהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ מִסַּ֛ת נִדְבַ֥ת יָדְךָ֖ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּתֵּ֑ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יְבָרֶכְךָ֖ יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ (יא) וְשָׂמַחְתָּ֞ לִפְנֵ֣י ׀ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ אַתָּ֨ה וּבִנְךָ֣ וּבִתֶּ֘ךָ֮ וְעַבְדְּךָ֣ וַאֲמָתֶ֒ךָ֒ וְהַלֵּוִי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בִּשְׁעָרֶ֔יךָ וְהַגֵּ֛ר וְהַיָּת֥וֹם וְהָאַלְמָנָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּקִרְבֶּ֑ךָ בַּמָּק֗וֹם אֲשֶׁ֤ר יִבְחַר֙ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ לְשַׁכֵּ֥ן שְׁמ֖וֹ שָֽׁם׃ (יב) וְזָ֣כַרְתָּ֔ כִּי־עֶ֥בֶד הָיִ֖יתָ בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֣ וְעָשִׂ֔יתָ אֶת־הַֽחֻקִּ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ {פ}

    (9) You shall count off seven weeks; start to count the seven weeks when the sickle is first put to the standing grain. (10) Then you shall observe the Feast of Weeks for your God יהוה, offering your freewill contribution according as your God יהוה has blessed you. (11) You shall rejoice before your God יהוה with your son and daughter, your male and female slave, the [family of the] Levite in your communities, and the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow in your midst, at the place where your God יהוה will choose to establish the divine name. (12) Bear in mind that you were slaves in Egypt, and take care to obey these laws.

  4. This is the sefirot chart. Sefirot (plural for sefira) are emanations from God. The top 4 are in the heavenly realm. Keter/Ein Sof is crown, the unending, unknowable Gd. Binah is understanding, Chochma is wisdom. Da'at is knowledge. The lower 7 are the ones the Omer is connected to, as we count the days. They are the secondary conscious divine emotions. Gevurah (strength) is opposite Chesed (lovingkindness). Tiferet is beauty. Hod is glory, splendor, opposite to Netzach, perpetuity, endurance. Yesod is foundation, and Malchut/Shechina is the realm closest to us. Shechina is the feminine aspect of God, and she is who we welcome as the Shabbat Bride on Friday nights. The chart is also related to the body; arms and legs, head and heart, and sexuality.

  5. Seasons of Love lyrics

    525,600 minutes
    525,000 moments so dear
    525,600 minutes
How do you measure, measure a year?

In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife
    In 525,600 minutes
How do you measure a year in the life?

    How about love? (3x)
    Measure in love
    Seasons of love (2x)

    525,600 minutes
    525,000 journeys to plan
    525,600 minutes
How do you measure the life of a woman or man?

In truths that she learned, or in times that he cried
In bridges he burned, or the way that she died

It's time now to sing out
    Though the story never ends
    Let's celebrate, remember a year
    In the life of friend

    ......
Measure, measure your life in love

  6. Notice the measuring is a life of love, a year in the life. Crying, sorrow, pain, regret...celebrate now, measure your life in love. Compare that to the measuring of each day as we do in counting the Omer. Journeying forward, not looking back except to remember our enslaved lives. Committing to the relationship between God and the Israelites, we count towards something - receiving the Torah at Sinai.  See you at Sinai!
