Another episode of Verse: Where Broadway and Torah Meeet, we explore the topic of the friendship between Jonathan and David, paired with "For Good" from Wicked.

  1. Notice how many words there are for "friend" In fact, the modern word for "friend", chaver, wasn't used until the Pirke Avot text. That was the first time it was introduced. The word "rayecha" or "ray-ey" doesn't necessarily mean friend. It could be translated as just some person, or a fellow Israelite, or a neighbor. In the case of Jonathan and David, the word is based on the verb "ahav" - love; in one case, however, David is called "object" (1 Sam 19:1)
    (18) You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against members of your people. Love your fellow [Israelite] as yourself: I am
    (1) When [David] finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan’s soul became bound up with the soul of David; Jonathan loved David as himself. (2) Saul took him [into his service] that day and would not let him return to his father’s house.—
    (1) Saul urged his son Jonathan and all his courtiers to kill David. But Saul’s son Jonathan was very fond of David,
  5. In modern Hebrew, Chafetz is "object"
    (12) My friends and companions stand back from my affliction;my kinsmen stand far off.
    (11) When Job’s three friends heard about all these calamities that had befallen him, each came from his home—Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They met together to go and console and comfort him.
    (6) Joshua ben Perahiah and Nittai the Arbelite received [the oral tradition] from them. Joshua ben Perahiah used to say: appoint for thyself a teacher, and acquire for thyself a companion and judge all men with the scale weighted in his favor.
    (7) If your brother, your own mother’s son,*your own mother’s son or your son or daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your closest friend*closest friend Lit. “friend who is as yourself.” ......
  10. GLINDA
I've heard it said That people come into our lives for a reason Bringing something we must learn
And we are led To those who help us most to grow
If we let them And we help them in return
    Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today Because I knew you:
Like a comet pulled from orbit As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you I have been changed for good
