Finding the Good in Consumption, Satiation, and Blessing

Blessing Over the Study of Torah

Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu laasok b’divrei Torah.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who sanctifies us with mitzvot, commanding us to engage with words of Torah.

What does it mean to be satisfied?

Is there a difference between being satisfied and being content?

(7) For your God יהוה is bringing you into a good land, a land with streams and springs and fountains issuing from plain and hill; (8) a land of wheat and barley, of vines, figs, and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey; (9) a land where you may eat food without stint, where you will lack nothing; a land whose rocks are iron and from whose hills you can mine copper.

What are some of the dangers of being TOO satisfied?

(11) Take care lest you forget your God יהוה and fail to keep the divine commandments, rules, and laws which I enjoin upon you today. (12) When you have eaten your fill, and have built fine houses to live in, (13) and your herds and flocks have multiplied, and your silver and gold have increased, and everything you own has prospered, (14) beware lest your heart grow haughty and you forget your God יהוה —who freed you from the land of Egypt, the house of bondage;

What are we forgetting here?

(10) When you have eaten your fill, give thanks to your God יהוה for the good land given to you.

We'll own that this is a very Americanized translation. Let's try to actually break it down a minute:

And you will eat, and you will be satisfied/satiatied, and you will bless"

Why does it matter that WE should bless God?

Hakarat HaTov: literally "recognizing the good" or embodying an attitude of gratitude

In what ways can achieving satisfaction in life lead to complacency,
and how can we ensure we remain grateful and grounded in our values?

(1) וברכת את ה' אלוקיך, the reason why the Lord blesses you in such a fashion is so that you will remember that only from God could you have been given a land with such an abundance of advantages.

Gratitude – hakarat hatov – is at the heart of what he has to say about the Israelites and their future in the Promised Land. Gratitude had not been their strong point in the desert. They complained about lack of food and water, about the manna and the lack of meat and vegetables, about the dangers they faced from the Egyptians as they were leaving, and about the inhabitants of the land they were about to enter. They lacked thankfulness during the difficult times. A greater danger still, said Moses, would be a lack of gratitude during the good times.
