B'tzelem Elohim - Beyond Image
By: Gabe Snyder [Image of God,
Anthropomorphism
, צלם אלוקים, ] In Reform Judaism, the phrase “ b’tzelem Elohim ” is often used to preach tolerance and unity, be it in a formal sermon or in a camp song...Each of these three scholars find contrasting and complimentary ideas on the topic of God’s image and
anthropomorphic
ideology through their commentaries on the B’reishit narrative....Altmann posits that this is an attempt to show a more vague semblance of God without alluding to physical traits.¹ This stems from a long-held Jewish aversion towards
anthropomorphism
....In this commentary, Rashi uses the
anthropomorphic
image of God creating with the hands. He does, however, acknowledge the question of God’s corporeality....Rashi questions the
anthropomorphic
qualities of God – God’s hands - but brings up a bit of anthropopathism by ascribing the character trait of modesty to God.
