The Sadducees were an influential party that questioned the validity of the Pharisees' oral traditions, including such fundamental beliefs as the survival of the soul after death. Doing away with many of the laws that separated Jews from Greeks, they were able to ingratiate themselves with the wealthy powerful class, such that many political leaders and priests were members of this party. Nevertheless, they eventually failed in their struggle to redefine Judaism.
