About This Text
Author: Yosef Hayyim
Composed: Baghdad, Iraq, c.1894 – c.1898 CE
Ben Ish Chai (“Son of a Living Man”), is a collection of sermons on the Torah blended with mystical insights and Sephardic legal rulings, based on sermons that the author delivered to his congregation. It is studied extensively and is a standard reference work for many Sephardic Jews, much like its Ashkenazi counterpart, the Kitzur Shulhan Arukh. It is known for its strict rulings, many of which are based upon kabbalistic teachings.
