The leader begins:
Gentlemen, let us say the blessing.
The others respond:
The Name of Adonoy will be blessed
מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם: from now forever.
The leader repeats:
The Name of Adonoy will be blessed
מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם: from now forever.
and proceeds:
Banish sorrow and fury too
וְאָז אִלֵּם בְּשִׁיר יָרוֹן, and then the mute will exult in song.
Guide us in the paths of righteousness.
Heed the blessing of the children of Jeshurun
בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן: (and) the sons of Aaron.30The blessing of the children of Jeshurun refers to the blessings recited by all Jews, whereas the blessings of the sons of Aaron refers to the special Birkas Kohanim, mentioned in Numbers, 6:24-26.
With your permission
מָרָנָן וְרַבָּנָן וְרַבּוֹתַי our masters and teachers,
נְבָרֵךְ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ let us bless our God,
שֶׁהַשִּׁמְחָה בִּמְעוֹנוֹ in Whose abode is joy31The phrase “in Whose abode is joy” is recited only when the meal is conducted with the decorum of sanctity, without the commingling of men and women. For there is no joy in God’s abode when commingling takes place.
(וְ)שֶׁאָכַֽלְנוּ מִשֶּׁלּוֹ: for we have eaten of His bounty.
The others respond:
Blessed is our God
שֶׁהַשִּׁמְחָה בִּמְעוֹנוֹ in Whose abode is joy
(וְ)שֶׁאָכַֽלְנוּ מִשֶּׁלּוֹ for we have eaten of His bounty
וּבְטוּבוֹ חָיִֽינוּ: and through His goodness we live.
The leader repeats:
Blessed is our God,
שֶׁהַשִּׁמְחָה בִּמְעוֹנוֹ in Whose abode is joy
(וְ)שֶׁאָכַֽלְנוּ מִשֶּׁלּוֹ [and] we have eaten of His bounty
וּבְטוּבוֹ חָיִֽינוּ: and through His goodness we live.
