(א) תְּפִלָּה֮ לְמֹשֶׁ֪ה אִֽישׁ־הָאֱלֹ֫קִ֥ים אֲֽדֹנָ֗י מָע֣וֹן אַ֭תָּה הָיִ֥יתָ לָּ֗נוּ בְּדֹ֣ר וָדֹֽר׃ (ב) בְּטֶ֤רֶם ׀ הָ֘רִ֤ים יֻלָּ֗דוּ וַתְּח֣וֹלֵֽל אֶ֣רֶץ וְתֵבֵ֑ל וּֽמֵעוֹלָ֥ם עַד־ע֝וֹלָ֗ם אַתָּ֥ה אֵֽל׃ (ג) תָּשֵׁ֣ב אֱ֭נוֹשׁ עַד־דַּכָּ֑א וַ֝תֹּ֗אמֶר שׁ֣וּבוּ בְנֵי־אָדָֽם׃ (ד) כִּ֤י אֶ֪לֶף שָׁנִ֡ים בְּֽעֵינֶ֗יךָ כְּי֣וֹם אֶ֭תְמוֹל כִּ֣י יַעֲבֹ֑ר וְאַשְׁמוּרָ֥ה בַלָּֽיְלָה׃...
(י) יְמֵֽי־שְׁנוֹתֵ֨ינוּ בָהֶ֥ם שִׁבְעִ֪ים שָׁנָ֡ה וְאִ֤ם בִּגְבוּרֹ֨ת ׀ שְׁמ֘וֹנִ֤ים שָׁנָ֗ה וְ֭רָהְבָּם עָמָ֣ל וָאָ֑וֶן כִּי־גָ֥ז חִ֝֗ישׁ וַנָּעֻֽפָה׃ (יא) מִֽי־י֭וֹדֵעַ עֹ֣ז אַפֶּ֑ךָ וּ֝כְיִרְאָתְךָ֗ עֶבְרָתֶֽךָ׃ (יב) לִמְנ֣וֹת יָ֭מֵינוּ כֵּ֣ן הוֹדַ֑ע וְ֝נָבִ֗א לְבַ֣ב חָכְמָֽה׃ (יג) שׁוּבָ֣ה ה' עַד־מָתָ֑י וְ֝הִנָּחֵ֗ם עַל־עֲבָדֶֽיךָ׃ (יד) שַׂבְּעֵ֣נוּ בַבֹּ֣קֶר חַסְדֶּ֑ךָ וּֽנְרַנְּנָ֥ה וְ֝נִשְׂמְחָ֗ה בְּכָל־יָמֵֽינוּ׃ (טו) שַׂ֭מְּחֵנוּ כִּימ֣וֹת עִנִּיתָ֑נוּ שְׁ֝נ֗וֹת רָאִ֥ינוּ רָעָֽה׃ (טז) יֵרָאֶ֣ה אֶל־עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ פָעֳלֶ֑ךָ וַ֝הֲדָרְךָ֗ עַל־בְּנֵיהֶֽם׃ (יז) וִיהִ֤י ׀ נֹ֤עַם אדושם אֱלֹקֵ֗ינוּ עָ֫לֵ֥ינוּ וּמַעֲשֵׂ֣ה יָ֭דֵינוּ כּוֹנְנָ֥ה עָלֵ֑ינוּ וּֽמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יָ֝דֵ֗ינוּ כּוֹנְנֵֽהוּ׃
(1) A prayer of Moses, the man of God. O Lord, You have been our refuge in every generation. (2) Before the mountains came into being, before You brought forth the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity You are God. (3) You return man to dust; You decreed, “Return you mortals!” (4) For in Your sight a thousand years are like yesterday that has passed, like a watch of the night....
(10) The span of our life is seventy years, or, given the strength, eighty years; but the best of them are trouble and sorrow. They pass by speedily, and we are in darkness. (11) Who can know Your furious anger? Your wrath matches the fear of You. (12) Teach us to count our days rightly, that we may obtain a wise heart. (13) Turn, O LORD! How long? Show mercy to Your servants. (14) Satisfy us at daybreak with Your steadfast love that we may sing for joy all our days. (15) Give us joy for as long as You have afflicted us, for the years we have suffered misfortune. (16) Let Your deeds be seen by Your servants, Your glory by their children. (17) May the favor of the Lord, our God, be upon us; let the work of our hands prosper, O prosper the work of our hands!
(א) יסוד החסידות ושרש העבודה התמימה הוא שיתברר ויתאמת אצל האדם מה חובתו בעולמו ולמה צריך שישים מבטו ומגמתו בכל אשר הוא עמל כל ימי חייו.
(1) The foundation of piety and the root of perfect service [of G-d] is for a person to clarify and come to realize as truth, what is his obligation in his world, and to what he needs to direct his focus and his goals in all that he toils all the days of his life.
(א) אבל החשבון עם הנפש הוא השתדלות האדם בעניני תורתו ועולמו בינו ובין שכלו כדי שידע בזה מה שיש לו ומה שיש עליו מן החובות
(ב) וכבר הזהירנו על זה הנביא ע״ה באמרו (דברים ד) וידעת היום והשבות אל לבבך כי ה׳ הוא האלקים וגו׳ ואמר דוד ע״ה (תהלים לד) טעמו וראו כי טוב ה׳ ואמר (ד״ה א כח) דע את אלקי אביך ועבדהו ואמר (תהלים לב) אל תהיו כסוס כפרד אין הבין
(ג) ואמר במי שלא הסתכל בעניניו ולא חשב עם נפשו עליהם (ישעיה מד) ולא ישיב אל לבו ולא דעת ולא תבונה ואמר (תהלים עח) לא זכרו את ידו ואמר (דברים לב) זכור ימות עולם ואמר (תהלים קמג) זכרתי ימים מקדם ואמר (איוב לו) אשא דעי למרחוק:
(1) Spiritual account-taking means the deliberation of a man on his torah and worldly affairs between his nefesh (bodily soul/emotional side/will) and his intellect, so that one may know what one has and what one still owes of his duties. (this will be clarified through examples).
(2) The prophet (Moshe) has already exhorted us on this in saying: "Know therefore this day, and establish it in your heart that the L-ord he is G-d" (Devarim 4:39), and David, peace be unto him, said: "O taste and see that G-d is good" (Tehilim 34:9), "know the G-d of your father and serve Him.." (Divrei Hayamim 28:9), and "Be you not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding" (Tehilim 32:9).
(3) It was said of one who did not examine his matters and did not account with himself on them: "None returns it to heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say" (Yeshaya 44:19), and "They remembered not His hand [nor the day when He delivered them from the oppressor]" (Tehilim 78:42), and "Remember the days of old..." (Devarim 32:7), and "I remember the days of old [I meditate on all Your works; I ponder on the work of Your hands]" (Tehilim 143:5), and "I will get my knowledge from afar [and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker]" (Iyov 36:3).
