Passover ~ "Layl Shimurim": A Special Night of being Watched Over by G-d

(לט) וַיֹּאפ֨וּ אֶת־הַבָּצֵ֜ק אֲשֶׁ֨ר הוֹצִ֧יאוּ מִמִּצְרַ֛יִם עֻגֹ֥ת מַצּ֖וֹת כִּ֣י לֹ֣א חָמֵ֑ץ כִּֽי־גֹרְשׁ֣וּ מִמִּצְרַ֗יִם וְלֹ֤א יָֽכְלוּ֙ לְהִתְמַהְמֵ֔הַּ וְגַם־צֵדָ֖ה לֹא־עָשׂ֥וּ לָהֶֽם׃ (מ) וּמוֹשַׁב֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָשְׁב֖וּ בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָֽה׃ (מא) וַיְהִ֗י מִקֵּץ֙ שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיְהִ֗י בְּעֶ֙צֶם֙ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה יָֽצְא֛וּ כָּל־צִבְא֥וֹת יְהוָ֖ה מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (מב) לֵ֣יל שִׁמֻּרִ֥ים הוּא֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה לְהוֹצִיאָ֖ם מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם הֽוּא־הַלַּ֤יְלָה הַזֶּה֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה שִׁמֻּרִ֛ים לְכָל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְדֹרֹתָֽם׃ (פ)

(39) And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough that they had taken out of Egypt, for it was not leavened, since they had been driven out of Egypt and could not delay; nor had they prepared any provisions for themselves. (40) The length of time that the Israelites lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years; (41) at the end of the four hundred and thirtieth year, to the very day, all the ranks of the LORD departed from the land of Egypt. (42) That was for the LORD a night of vigil to bring them out of the land of Egypt; that same night is the LORD’s, one of vigil for all the children of Israel throughout the ages.

Come and hear an additional proof with regard to the day of the revelation at Sinai from what was taught in a baraita: In the month of Nisan during which the Jewish people left Egypt, on the fourteenth, they slaughtered their Paschal lambs; on the fifteenth, they left Egypt; and in the evening, the firstborn were stricken. The Gemara asks: Does it enter your mind to say that they were stricken in the evening? Was the Plague of the Firstborn after the Jews left Egypt? Rather, say that the evening before, the firstborn were stricken. And that day was the fifth day of the week. From the fact that the fifteenth of Nisan was a Thursday, the New Moon of Iyyar was Shabbat, as Nisan is typically thirty days long. And the New Moon of Sivan was on the first day of the week, as Iyyar is typically twenty-nine days long. This is difficult according to the opinion of the Rabbis, who hold that the New Moon of Sivan that year was on Monday.

Talmud Pesachim 109b

Rav Naḥman said that the verse said: “It was a night of watchingto the Lord” (Exodus 12:42), which indicates that Passover night is a night that remains guarded from demons and harmful spirits of all kinds. Therefore, there is no cause for concern about this form of danger on this particular night.

It was also taught in the baraita: Rabbi Yehoshua says: In Nisan our forefathers were redeemed from Egypt; and in Nisan in the future the Jewish people will be redeemed in the final redemption. The Gemara asks: From where do we derive that the final redemption will be in Nisan? The verse states: “It is a night of watching for the Lord for bringing them out from the land of Egypt; this is the Lord’s night of watching, for all the children of Israel throughout their generations” (Exodus 12:42). This teaches that the night of Passover is a night that has been continuously watched, i.e., set aside for the purpose of redemption, from the six days of Creation, and it will continue to be so until the final redemption.

ליל שימורים הוא לה' (שמות יב, מב). הכלל, הקדוש ברוך הוא משפיע תמיד חסד על ישראל וכדי שלא יקבלו חס ושלום החיצונים מהחסד ההוא הנשפע מהבורא ברוך הוא על העולמות לזה ישראל בהמצות עושים פעולות שהבורא ברוך הוא ישפיע תמיד חסד על ישראל ובלא תעשה פועלים שלא יקבלו החיצונים השפע. והנה במצרים עדיין לא קבלו ישראל התורה המצות עשה והמצות לא תעשה אך כביכו"ל השם יתברך בעצמו עשה זה לטובת ישראל לשמור השפע וחסד שלא יוכלו החיצונים לקבל. וזהו הרמז ליל שמורים הוא לה', כביכו"ל עשה זה השמירה שלא יקבלו החיצונים השפע. וזהו הרמז במדרש אני שמרתי מצות הזקן תחילה, כי אברהם אבינו עליו השלום עשה זה השמירה שלא יקבלו החיצונים השפע וקודם שבא אברהם אבינו אזי השם יתברך לאהבת נשמת ישראל עשה זה השמירה שלא יקבלו החסד רק נשמת ישראל:
Exodus 12,42. “that night will remain a ‎night of remembrance for Hashem, etc.” ‎Although it is a rule that G’d watches over Israel ‎benevolently constantly, and that He had equipped the ‎Israelites with positive as well as with negative ‎commandments so that non deserving (worlds) nations ‎would not share the benefit from His acts of kindness ‎for the Israelites by default, at this point in history ‎when the Torah had not yet been given to the people of ‎Israel, G’d had to perform His acts of kindness directly, ‎‎-not through emissaries, angels, to make certain that ‎they would benefit only the people for whom they were ‎intended. These considerations have been hinted at in ‎the words of our verse that G’d’s acts on behalf of ‎Israel during the night of the Exodus were of an ‎extraordinary nature. This idea has also been alluded ‎to in the Midrash which states: “I have kept in ‎mind for all these years the commandment performed ‎by the ‘old man,’ Avraham, who was the first person ‎taking action to prevent the negative forces in the ‎world from benefiting from G’d’s largesse. Prior to ‎Avraham’s appearing on the scene, G’d personally had ‎to see to it that the totally undeserving souls did not ‎benefit from His benevolence through a spillover from ‎the deserving. ליל שמורים הוא לה'. על דרך הפשט בעבור שהזכיר ליל שמורים הוא לה'. ובסוף שמורים לכל בנ''י לדורותם. נראה כי הטעם בעבור שהשם שמרם. ולא יתן המשחית לבוא אל בתיכם לנגוף. צוה שיהיה זה הלילה שמורים לכל בני ישראל לדורותם. וטעם אכילת הפסח על משפטו ומצות ומרורים בלילה הזה. ויש מפרשים אותו כטעם שומרי החומות. שלא ישנו רק יודו ויספרו גבורות השם בצאתם ממצרים. וככה רמזו חכמינו ז''ל הגיע זמן קריאת שמע של שחרית
It was a night of watching unto the Lord: According to its simple understanding, since it mentioned, "it was a night of watching unto the Lord," and at the end, "watching... for all the Children of Israel throughout their generations" - it appears that the explanation is that because the Lord watched them and did not let the destroyer come to their homes to attack, He commanded that this night be preserved by all of the Children of Israel throughout their generation. And [this is by way of] eating the Passover sacrifice, according to its statute, and matza and bitter herbs on that night. But some understand it's explanation to be like the explanation of "the watchers of the [city] walls" (Song of Songs 5:7), such that they not sleep, but rather give thanks and recount the powerful acts of the Lord upon their leaving Egypt. And the Sages, may their memory be blessed, hint to this - "the time of reading Shema in the morning has arrived" (Passover Haggadah).
שמרים לכל בני ישראל לדורותם. אז היא שעה המוכשרת להיות נגאל מכל צרות באשר היה אז גאולה ראשונה. ע״כ הוא שעת הכושר לעולם. כי זה היום עשה ה׳ להיות גורם לזה כמש״כ לעיל א׳:
A vigil (or “Stored up”) … for all the B’nei Yisrael. Because this was the time of Yisrael’s first redemption it was “stored up” for them for all generations as an auspicious time for deliverance from every type of affliction.
