Procrastination
מַהוּ כָּאן. שֶׁבְּשָׁעָה שֶׁנָּדַר מַה הוּא אוֹמֵר, אִם יִהְיֶה אֱלֹהִים עִמָּדִי, שֶׁלֹּא נִטְעֶה אַחַר עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה. וּשְׁמָרַנִי, מִגִּלּוּי עֲרָיוֹת. בַּדֶּרֶךְ הַזֶּה, מִשְּׁפִיכוּת דָּמִים. וְעַל שֶׁאֵחַר אֶת נִדְרוֹ, לָקָה בִשְׁלָשְׁתָּן. עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה מִנַּיִן, דִּכְתִיב: הָסִירוּ אֶת אֱלֹהֵי הַנֵּכָר. גִּלּוּי עֲרָיוֹת, מִדִּינָה. שְׁפִיכוּת דָּמִים, וַיַּהַרְגוּ כָּל זָכָר. לְלַמֶּדְךָ שֶׁאִחוּר נֶדֶר קָשֶׁה מִשְּׁלָשְׁתָּן, שֶׁעַל שֶׁאֵחַר אֶת נִדְרוֹ לָקָה בִשְׁלָשְׁתָּן.
What did he say when he made his vow? If God will be with me (ibid. 28:20); that is, so that I shall not go astray after idolatry; and will keep me (ibid.), from committing acts of lewdness; in this way (ibid.), from being guilty of spilling blood. Because he delayed fulfilling his vow, he was smitten by all three. How do we know about idolatry? It is written: Put away the strange gods (ibid. 35:2). We know about lewdness from the episode of Dinah, and about bloodshed from the fact that they killed all the males. This teaches us that procrastination in the fulfillment of a vow is the most serious of all three. Because he neglected to fulfill his vow he experienced all three.
על כן שים לך האריכות הזאת לשלל בעוד שתוכל לפרוע מה שאתה חייב בו לבורא יום יום ואל תאחר מעשה יומך למחרתך פן יכבד עליך לפרעו אם תגיע למחרת ותהיה מנושיו (ס״‎א מאנשיו) וקשה מזה אם יבא קצך ותצר עליך האמתלא ותפסק טענתך כי העולם כשוק שיתקבץ ואחר יפרד ומי שסחר והרויח שמח ומי שהפסיד התחרט ועל כן אמר החכם (קהלת יב) וזכור את בוראך בימי בחורותיך וגו':
Instead, make this procrastination time into a bounty (use it properly), while you can still pay back your daily obligations to the Creator, and do not procrastinate doing today's service until tomorrow, lest it will be too much of a burden for you to pay back, assuming that you reach tomorrow and are among its (living) men. Worse than this, if your end comes, your excuse will be cornered, and your claim will be halted, because this world is like a market fair which crowds together and then disperses. He who did business and profited is joyful, but he who lost money regrets, therefore the wise man said: "And remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of calamity come..." (Koheles 12:1).
וַֽיִּתְמַהְמָ֓הּ ׀ וַיַּחֲזִ֨קוּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֜ים בְּיָד֣וֹ וּבְיַד־אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וּבְיַד֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י בְנֹתָ֔יו בְּחֶמְלַ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה עָלָ֑יו וַיֹּצִאֻ֥הוּ וַיַּנִּחֻ֖הוּ מִח֥וּץ לָעִֽיר׃
Still he delayed. So the men seized his hand, and the hands of his wife and his two daughters—in the LORD’s mercy on him—and brought him out and left him outside the city.
וַֽיִּתְמַהְמָ֓הּ ׀ וַיַּחֲזִ֨קוּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֜ים בְּיָד֣וֹ וּבְיַד־אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וּבְיַד֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י בְנֹתָ֔יו בְּחֶמְלַ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה עָלָ֑יו וַיֹּצִאֻ֥הוּ וַיַּנִּחֻ֖הוּ מִח֥וּץ לָעִֽיר׃

ויתמהמה, עדיין היה מתמהמה כאילו היה חס על ממונו שהיה מניחו לפי התעכבו עד שעלה השחר ולא הניחו לקחת בידו מאומה אע"פ שאמרו לו וכל אשר לך.
ויתמהמה, Lot was still hesitant, apparently being loath to leave his wealth behind in the city. The angels therefore delayed until dawn, at which time they did not allow him time to save anything but his very life and the clothes he was wearing, even though, initially, they had asked him what else he owned in the city, implying that this too would be saved. "The Jewish value that is most antagonistic to procrastination is known as zerizut, often translated as 'alertness' or 'haste.' The person who exemplifies this value is called a zariz, someone who acts with alacrity and energy, especially when performing a mitzvah, or good deed. Our Sages advise us that zerizim makdimim lemitzvot, alert individuals perform mitzvot as soon as they can. “Abraham awoke early in the morning,” a phrase that appears more than once in the book of Genesis, typifies the behavior of the zariz who springs into action at daybreak.?

(ד) הוּא הָיָה אוֹמֵר, עֲשֵׂה רְצוֹנוֹ כִרְצוֹנְךָ, כְּדֵי שֶׁיַּעֲשֶׂה רְצוֹנְךָ כִרְצוֹנוֹ. בַּטֵּל רְצוֹנְךָ מִפְּנֵי רְצוֹנוֹ, כְּדֵי שֶׁיְּבַטֵּל רְצוֹן אֲחֵרִים מִפְּנֵי רְצוֹנֶךָ. הִלֵּל אוֹמֵר, אַל תִּפְרֹשׁ מִן הַצִּבּוּר, וְאַל תַּאֲמִין בְּעַצְמְךָ עַד יוֹם מוֹתְךָ, וְאַל תָּדִין אֶת חֲבֵרְךָ עַד שֶׁתַּגִּיעַ לִמְקוֹמוֹ, וְאַל תֹּאמַר דָּבָר שֶׁאִי אֶפְשָׁר לִשְׁמֹעַ, שֶׁסּוֹפוֹ לְהִשָּׁמַע. וְאַל תֹּאמַר לִכְשֶׁאִפָּנֶה אֶשְׁנֶה, שֶׁמָּא לֹא תִפָּנֶה: ​​​​​​​

(4) He used to say: do His will as though it were your will, so that He will do your will as though it were His. Set aside your will in the face of His will, so that he may set aside the will of others for the sake of your will. Hillel said: do not separate yourself from the community, Do not trust in yourself until the day of your death, Do not judge not your fellow man until you have reached his place. Do not say something that cannot be understood [trusting] that in the end it will be understood. Say not: ‘when I shall have leisure I shall study;’ perhaps you will not have leisure.
