(א) וַיִּסַּ֤ע יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר־ל֔וֹ וַיָּבֹ֖א בְּאֵ֣רָה שָּׁ֑בַע וַיִּזְבַּ֣ח זְבָחִ֔ים לֵא-לֹהֵ֖י אָבִ֥יו יִצְחָֽק׃ (ב) וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֱ-לֹהִ֤ים ׀ לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בְּמַרְאֹ֣ת הַלַּ֔יְלָה וַיֹּ֖אמֶר יַעֲקֹ֣ב ׀ יַעֲקֹ֑ב וַיֹּ֖אמֶר הִנֵּֽנִי׃ (ג) וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אָנֹכִ֥י הָאֵ֖-ל אֱלֹ-הֵ֣י אָבִ֑יךָ אַל־תִּירָא֙ מֵרְדָ֣ה מִצְרַ֔יְמָה כִּֽי־לְג֥וֹי גָּד֖וֹל אֲשִֽׂימְךָ֥ שָֽׁם׃ (ד) אָנֹכִ֗י אֵרֵ֤ד עִמְּךָ֙ מִצְרַ֔יְמָה וְאָנֹכִ֖י אַֽעַלְךָ֣ גַם־עָלֹ֑ה וְיוֹסֵ֕ף יָשִׁ֥ית יָד֖וֹ עַל־עֵינֶֽיךָ׃ (ה) וַיָּ֥קָם יַעֲקֹ֖ב מִבְּאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע וַיִּשְׂא֨וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אֶת־יַעֲקֹ֣ב אֲבִיהֶ֗ם וְאֶת־טַפָּם֙ וְאֶת־נְשֵׁיהֶ֔ם בָּעֲגָל֕וֹת אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַ֥ח פַּרְעֹ֖ה לָשֵׂ֥את אֹתֽוֹ׃

(1) And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beer-sheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. (2) And God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said: ‘Yaakov, Yaakov.’ And he said: ‘Here am I.’ (3) And He said: ‘I am God, the God of your father; do not fear to go down to Egypt; for I will there make of you a great nation. (4) I will go down with you to Egypt; and I will also surely bring you up again; and Yosef shall put his hand upon your eyes.’ (5) And Yaakov rose up from Be'er-sheva; and the sons of Israel carried Yaakov their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.

1. What are the fears of Yaakov? The simple fact that he offers sacrifices is akin to prayer or search for God at this moment - God answers in a dream.

2. The "God of Yitzchak" is called "Pachad Yitzchak" even by Yaakov, when he made the peace treaty with Lavan.

3. Let's look into the past. What were Yaakov's fears when he set out to Haran?

(י) וַיֵּצֵ֥א יַעֲקֹ֖ב מִבְּאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ חָרָֽנָה׃ (יא) וַיִּפְגַּ֨ע בַּמָּק֜וֹם וַיָּ֤לֶן שָׁם֙ כִּי־בָ֣א הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ וַיִּקַּח֙ מֵאַבְנֵ֣י הַמָּק֔וֹם וַיָּ֖שֶׂם מְרַֽאֲשֹׁתָ֑יו וַיִּשְׁכַּ֖ב בַּמָּק֥וֹם הַהֽוּא׃ (יב) וַֽיַּחֲלֹ֗ם וְהִנֵּ֤ה סֻלָּם֙ מֻצָּ֣ב אַ֔רְצָה וְרֹאשׁ֖וֹ מַגִּ֣יעַ הַשָּׁמָ֑יְמָה וְהִנֵּה֙ מַלְאֲכֵ֣י אֱלֹהִ֔ים עֹלִ֥ים וְיֹרְדִ֖ים בּֽוֹ׃ (יג) וְהִנֵּ֨ה ה' נִצָּ֣ב עָלָיו֮ וַיֹּאמַר֒ אֲנִ֣י ה' אֱ-לֹהֵי֙ אַבְרָהָ֣ם אָבִ֔יךָ וֵא-לֹהֵ֖י יִצְחָ֑ק הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֤ר אַתָּה֙ שֹׁכֵ֣ב עָלֶ֔יהָ לְךָ֥ אֶתְּנֶ֖נָּה וּלְזַרְעֶֽךָ׃ (יד) וְהָיָ֤ה זַרְעֲךָ֙ כַּעֲפַ֣ר הָאָ֔רֶץ וּפָרַצְתָּ֛ יָ֥מָּה וָקֵ֖דְמָה וְצָפֹ֣נָה וָנֶ֑גְבָּה וְנִבְרֲכ֥וּ בְךָ֛ כָּל־מִשְׁפְּחֹ֥ת הָאֲדָמָ֖ה וּבְזַרְעֶֽךָ׃ (טו) וְהִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֜י עִמָּ֗ךְ וּשְׁמַרְתִּ֙יךָ֙ בְּכֹ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־תֵּלֵ֔ךְ וַהֲשִׁ֣בֹתִ֔יךָ אֶל־הָאֲדָמָ֖ה הַזֹּ֑את כִּ֚י לֹ֣א אֶֽעֱזָבְךָ֔ עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִם־עָשִׂ֔יתִי אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי לָֽךְ׃ (טז) וַיִּיקַ֣ץ יַעֲקֹב֮ מִשְּׁנָתוֹ֒ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אָכֵן֙ יֵ֣שׁ ה' בַּמָּק֖וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה וְאָנֹכִ֖י לֹ֥א יָדָֽעְתִּי׃ (יז) וַיִּירָא֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר מַה־נּוֹרָ֖א הַמָּק֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה אֵ֣ין זֶ֗ה כִּ֚י אִם־בֵּ֣ית אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְזֶ֖ה שַׁ֥עַר הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃

(10) And Yaakov went out from Be'er-sheva, and went toward Haran. (11) And he bumped into the place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep. (12) And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold the angels of Ad-nai ascending and descending on it. (13) And, behold, Ad-nai stood beside him, and said: ‘I am Ad-nai, the God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac. The land where you are lying down, I will give it to you and to your seed. (14) And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. And in you and in your seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. (15) And, behold, I am with you, and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back into this land; for I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken to you of.’ (16) And Yaakov woke up from his sleep, and he said: ‘Surely Ad-nai is in this place; and I knew it not.’ (17) And he was afraid, and said: ‘How full of awe is this place! this is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.’

1. What are the fears that God wants to assuage Yaakov of? Are they different fears? Is going down to Egypt a more serious business than staying for 21 years in Haran? How is the experience of being a stranger has shaped Yaakov?

2. How definite is going down to Egypt? Would Yaakov not know the promise to Avraham?

(יב) וַיְהִ֤י הַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ לָב֔וֹא וְתַרְדֵּמָ֖ה נָפְלָ֣ה עַל־אַבְרָ֑ם וְהִנֵּ֥ה אֵימָ֛ה חֲשֵׁכָ֥ה גְדֹלָ֖ה נֹפֶ֥לֶת עָלָֽיו׃ (יג) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְאַבְרָ֗ם יָדֹ֨עַ תֵּדַ֜ע כִּי־גֵ֣ר ׀ יִהְיֶ֣ה זַרְעֲךָ֗ בְּאֶ֙רֶץ֙ לֹ֣א לָהֶ֔ם וַעֲבָד֖וּם וְעִנּ֣וּ אֹתָ֑ם אַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָֽה׃ (יד) וְגַ֧ם אֶת־הַגּ֛וֹי אֲשֶׁ֥ר יַעֲבֹ֖דוּ דָּ֣ן אָנֹ֑כִי וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵ֥ן יֵצְא֖וּ בִּרְכֻ֥שׁ גָּדֽוֹל׃ (טו) וְאַתָּ֛ה תָּב֥וֹא אֶל־אֲבֹתֶ֖יךָ בְּשָׁל֑וֹם תִּקָּבֵ֖ר בְּשֵׂיבָ֥ה טוֹבָֽה׃

(12) And it came to pass, that, when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, behold, dread, a great darkness, fell upon him. (13) And He said to Abram: ‘Know with surety that your seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; (14) and also that nation, whom they shall serve, I will judge; and afterward shall they come out with great wealth. (15) But you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age.

So, one answer is the anxiety of the future - are his kids, his grandchildren experience servitude?

But another question is the locality of God. This fear is very clear in Nach:

(יח) וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לָ֥מָּה זֶּ֛ה אֲדֹנִ֥י רֹדֵ֖ף אַחֲרֵ֣י עַבְדּ֑וֹ כִּ֚י מֶ֣ה עָשִׂ֔יתִי וּמַה־בְּיָדִ֖י רָעָֽה׃ (יט) וְעַתָּ֗ה יִֽשְׁמַֽע־נָא֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֵ֖ת דִּבְרֵ֣י עַבְדּ֑וֹ אִם־ה' הֱסִֽיתְךָ֥ בִי֙ יָרַ֣ח מִנְחָ֔ה וְאִ֣ם ׀ בְּנֵ֣י הָאָדָ֗ם אֲרוּרִ֥ים הֵם֙ לִפְנֵ֣י ה' כִּֽי־גֵרְשׁ֣וּנִי הַיּ֗וֹם מֵהִסְתַּפֵּ֜חַ בְּנַחֲלַ֤ת ה' לֵאמֹ֔ר לֵ֥ךְ עֲבֹ֖ד אֱלֹהִ֥ים אֲחֵרִֽים׃

(18) And he [David] said [to Saul]: ‘Why does my lord pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in my hand? (19) Now therefore, I beg, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is Ad-nai who has stirred you up against me, let Him accept an offering; but if humans, cursed be they before Ad-nai; for they have driven me out this day that I should not cleave to the inheritance of Ad-nai saying: Go, serve other gods.

(טו) וַיָּשָׁב֩ אֶל־אִ֨ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֜ים ה֣וּא וְכָֽל־מַחֲנֵ֗הוּ וַיָּבֹא֮ וַיַּעֲמֹ֣ד לְפָנָיו֒ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּה־נָ֤א יָדַ֙עְתִּי֙ כִּ֣י אֵ֤ין אֱלֹהִים֙ בְּכָל־הָאָ֔רֶץ כִּ֖י אִם־בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְעַתָּ֛ה קַח־נָ֥א בְרָכָ֖ה מֵאֵ֥ת עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ (טז) וַיֹּ֕אמֶר חַי־ה' אֲשֶׁר־עָמַ֥דְתִּי לְפָנָ֖יו אִם־אֶקָּ֑ח וַיִּפְצַר־בּ֥וֹ לָקַ֖חַת וַיְמָאֵֽן׃ (יז) וַיֹּאמֶר֮ נַעֲמָן֒ וָלֹ֕א יֻתַּן־נָ֣א לְעַבְדְּךָ֔ מַשָּׂ֥א צֶֽמֶד־פְּרָדִ֖ים אֲדָמָ֑ה כִּ֡י לֽוֹא־יַעֲשֶׂה֩ ע֨וֹד עַבְדְּךָ֜ עֹלָ֤ה וָזֶ֙בַח֙ לֵאלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים כִּ֖י אִם־לַה'

(15) And he [Na'aman] returned to the man of God [Elisha], he and all his company, and came, and stood before him; and he said: ‘Behold now, I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel; now therefore, I beg, accept a gift of your servant.’ (16) But he said: ‘As Ad-nai lives, before Whom I stand, I will accept none.’ And he urged him to take it; but he refused. (17) And Naaman said: ‘If not, yet I beg you, let there be given to your servant two mules’ burden of earth; for your servant will henceforth offer neither burnt-offering nor sacrifice to other gods, but to Ad-nai.

(א) וַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־ה' אֶל־יוֹנָ֥ה בֶן־אֲמִתַּ֖י לֵאמֹֽר׃ (ב) ק֠וּם לֵ֧ךְ אֶל־נִֽינְוֵ֛ה הָעִ֥יר הַגְּדוֹלָ֖ה וּקְרָ֣א עָלֶ֑יהָ כִּֽי־עָלְתָ֥ה רָעָתָ֖ם לְפָנָֽי׃ (ג) וַיָּ֤קָם יוֹנָה֙ לִבְרֹ֣חַ תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה מִלִּפְנֵ֖י ה' וַיֵּ֨רֶד יָפ֜וֹ וַיִּמְצָ֥א אָנִיָּ֣ה ׀ בָּאָ֣ה תַרְשִׁ֗ישׁ וַיִּתֵּ֨ן שְׂכָרָ֜הּ וַיֵּ֤רֶד בָּהּ֙ לָב֤וֹא עִמָּהֶם֙ תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה מִלִּפְנֵ֖י ה'׃

(1) Now the word of Ad-nai came to Yonah the son of Amitai, saying: (2) 'Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim against it; for their wickedness is come up before Me.’ (3) But Yonah got up to flee to Tarshish, from the presence of Ad-nai; and he went down to Yafo, and found a ship going to Tarshish; he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, from the presence of Ad-nai.

Genesis does not contain that anxiety, on the contrary, you have God showing up and assuaging Yaakov precisely against that.

  • God takes Abraham out of Ur Kasdim (Gen 15:7).
  • God addresses Abraham in Haran (Gen 12:1-3).
  • God’s angels reach Sodom (Gen 19:1-29).
  • God comes in a dream to Abimelech the Philistine king of Gerar (Gen 20:3-7).
  • God’s angel reveals Himself twice to Hagar in the wilderness (16:7-12; 21:17-19) and He was there with Ishmael too (21:20).
  • Shemot 22 will also have God talking to Bilam in Petura. And of course we could bring here Moshe, but who is like Moshe? The book is trying to talk to simpler people, us.
  • Yosef does not seem to have this problem, even though the name of God that he uses is consistently E-lohim:

(ט) מַהֲרוּ֮ וַעֲל֣וּ אֶל־אָבִי֒ וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֣ם אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ בִּנְךָ֣ יוֹסֵ֔ף שָׂמַ֧נִי אֱלֹהִ֛ים לְאָד֖וֹן לְכָל־מִצְרָ֑יִם רְדָ֥ה אֵלַ֖י אַֽל־תַּעֲמֹֽד׃

(9) Hurry! Go up to my father, and say to him: So says your son Yosef: God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, tarry not!

The reason is that Yaakov, more than Yosef, is the prototype of the Jew going into Diaspora, and remaining there - the promise of God about Yosef closing his eyes and that God will bring Yaakov back is realized only with Yosef burying Yaakov in the Land of Israel.

All of us have sensed the fears - the disappearing of the Jewish community, what will be our children's and grand children's futures, is how we live Judaism really an opening to God's presence?

And the unequivocal answer of the Torah is - Yes. Keep going. Keep studying. Keep observing. Keep teaching. God is our own mikdash me'at [Ez. 11:16].
