Star Wars & Judaism X: The Last Jedi

Potential in New Trainee

SNOKE: Hmm. The mighty Kylo Ren. When I found you... I saw what all masters live to see. Raw, untamed power. And beyond that, something truly special.

One day, Rabbi Yoḥanan was bathing in the Jordan River. Reish Lakish saw him and jumped into the Jordan, pursuing him. He said to Reish Lakish: "Your strength is fit for Torah study."

Reish Lakish said to him: "Your beauty is fit for women."

Rabbi Yoḥanan said to him: "If you return to the pursuit of Torah, I will give you my sister in marriage, who is more beautiful than I am."

Reish Lakish accepted upon himself to study Torah. Subsequently, Reish Lakish wanted to jump back out of the river to bring back his clothes, but he was unable to return.

Rabbi Yoḥanan taught Reish Lakish Bible, and taught him Mishna, and turned him into a great man.

Anger/Immaturity

SNOKE: Skywalker lives. The seed of the Jedi Order lives. As long as it does, hope lives in the galaxy. I thought you would be the one to snuff it out. Alas, you're no Vader. You're just a child in a mask.

It was taught: Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar says from the name of Ḥilfa bar Agra, who said from the name of Rabbi Yoḥanan ben Nuri: "One who rends his garments in his anger, or who breaks his vessels in his anger, or who scatters his money in his anger, should be like an idol worshipper in your eyes, as that is the craft of the evil inclination. Today it tells him do this, and tomorrow it tells him do that, until eventually, when he no longer controls himself, it tells him worship idols and he goes and worships idols."

??

REY: There is no light left in Kylo Ren. He's only getting stronger. The First Order will control all the major systems within weeks. We need your help. We need the Jedi Order back. We need Luke Skywalker.

LUKE: You don't need Luke Skywalker.

REY: Did you hear a word I just said?

LUKE: You think what? I'm gonna walk out with a laser sword and face down the whole First Order? What did you think was going to happen here? You think that I came to the most unfindable place in the galaxy for no reason at all? Go away.

(2) If a cow gave birth to a species of donkey, or a donkey gave birth to a species of horse, it is exempt from [the law of] the firstling, for it is said, “the firstling of a donkey,” “the firstling of a donkey,” twice [to teach that the law of the firstling does not apply] until that which gives birth is a donkey and that which is born is a donkey. And what is the law with regard to eating them? If a clean animal gave birth to a species of unclean animal, it is permitted to be eaten. But if an unclean animal gave birth to a species of a clean animal, it is forbidden to be eaten, for that which comes out of the unclean is unclean and that which comes out of the clean is clean. If an unclean fish swallowed a clean fish, it is permitted to be eaten. But if a clean fish has swallowed an unclean fish, the latter is forbidden to be eaten, because it is not [the clean fish's] growth.

(12) Everything in water that has no fins and scales shall be an abomination for you.

Special place

LUKE: Who are you?

REY: I know this place.

LUKE: Built a thousand generations ago... to keep these. The original Jedi texts. Just like me, they're the last of the Jedi religion. You've seen this place. You've seen this island.

REY: Only in dreams.

(13) Take care not to sacrifice your burnt offerings in any place you like, (14) but only in the place that the LORD will choose in one of your tribal territories. There you shall sacrifice your burnt offerings and there you shall observe all that I enjoin upon you. (15) But whenever you desire, you may slaughter and eat meat in any of your settlements, according to the blessing that the LORD your God has granted you. The unclean and the clean alike may partake of it, as of the gazelle and the deer. (16) But you must not partake of the blood; you shall pour it out on the ground like water. (17) You may not partake in your settlements of the tithes of your new grain or wine or oil, or of the firstlings of your herds and flocks, or of any of the votive offerings that you vow, or of your freewill offerings, or of your contributions. (18) These you must consume before the LORD your God in the place that the LORD your God will choose—you and your sons and your daughters, your male and female slaves, and the Levite in your settlements—happy before the LORD your God in all your undertakings. (19) Be sure not to neglect the Levite as long as you live in your land. (20) When the LORD enlarges your territory, as He has promised you, and you say, “I shall eat some meat,” for you have the urge to eat meat, you may eat meat whenever you wish. (21) If the place where the LORD has chosen to establish His name is too far from you, you may slaughter any of the cattle or sheep that the LORD gives you, as I have instructed you; and you may eat to your heart’s content in your settlements. (22) Eat it, however, as the gazelle and the deer are eaten: the unclean may eat it together with the clean. (23) But make sure that you do not partake of the blood; for the blood is the life, and you must not consume the life with the flesh. (24) You must not partake of it; you must pour it out on the ground like water: (25) you must not partake of it, in order that it may go well with you and with your descendants to come, for you will be doing what is right in the sight of the LORD. (26) But such sacred and votive donations as you may have shall be taken by you to the site that the LORD will choose. (27) You shall offer your burnt offerings, both the flesh and the blood, on the altar of the LORD your God; and of your other sacrifices, the blood shall be poured out on the altar of the LORD your God, and you shall eat the flesh.

Not interested in teaching

REY: Something inside me has always been there Then now it's awake. And I'm afraid. I do not know what it is... or what to do with it. And I need help.

LUKE: You need a teacher. I can't teach you.

REY: Why not? I've seen your daily routine. You're not busy.

LUKE: I will never train another generation of Jedi. I came to this island to die. It's time for the Jedi to end.

LUKE: Tomorrow at dawn. Three lessons. I will teach you the ways of the Jedi... and why they need to end.

Joshua ben Perahiah used to say: "Make a teacher for you, acquire a friend for yourself, and judge everyone with the scale weighted on the favorable side."

Force

LUKE: What do you know about the Force?

REY: It's a power that Jedi have that lets them control people and make things float.

LUKE: Impressive. Every word in that sentence was wrong. Lesson one, sit here, legs crossed. The Force is not a power you have. It's not about lifting rocks. It's the energy between all things, a tension, a balance, that binds the universe together.

(7) Where can I escape from Your spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? (8) If I ascend to heaven, You are there; if I descend to Sheol, You are there too. (9) If I take wing with the dawn to come to rest on the western horizon, (10) even there Your hand will be guiding me, Your right hand will be holding me fast. (11) If I say, “Surely darkness will conceal me, night will provide me with cover,” (12) darkness is not dark for You; night is as light as day; darkness and light are the same.

More Force

LUKE: Breathe. Just breathe. Reach out with your feelings. What do you see?
REY: The island. Life. Death and decay, that feeds new life. Warmth. Cold. Peace. Violence.
LUKE: And between it all?
REY: Balance. And energy. A Force.
LUKE: And inside you?

REY: Inside me the same Force.

LUKE: And this is the lesson. That Force does not belong to the Jedi. To say that, 'If the Jedi die, the light dies', is vanity.

God stuff?

Gambling

And these are they which are not qualified [to be witnesses or judges]: A dice player, a usurer, pigeon racers, or traffickers in Seventh Year produce.

one who plays with dice for money, what is he doing that disqualifies him from bearing witness?

Rami bar Ḥama says: He is disqualified because gambling is a transaction with inconclusive consent [asmakhta], as one who gambles does not have conclusive consent to pay when he loses since he plays under the assumption that he will win. And as an asmakhta does not effect acquisition, the one who wins takes money that is not legally his, and is considered a robber.

Rav Sheshet says: "Any case like this is not an asmakhta. In a game of dice both sides realize that they might lose, and consent at the outset to pay if that happens. Rather, those who play dice are disqualified because they are not involved in settling the world, i.e., in productive occupations that demand hard work. Since they do not realize the effort required of most people to earn a living they might not be scrupulous about other people’s money, and their testimony cannot be relied upon."

Jedi romanticized

LUKE: Lesson Two. Now that they're extinct, the Jedi are romanticized, defied. But if you strip away the myth and look at their deeds, the legacy of the Jedi is failure. Hypocrisy, hubris.

And she wandered about in the wilderness of Beer-sheba. (15) When the water was gone from the skin, she left the child under one of the bushes, (16) and went and sat down at a distance, a bowshot away; for she thought, “Let me not look on as the child dies.” And sitting thus afar, she burst into tears. YODA: Time it is. For you to look at a pile of old books, hmmm?

YODA: Oh. Read them, have you?

LUKE: Well, I...

YODA: Page-turners they were not. Yes, yes, yes. Wisdom they held, but that library contained nothing that the girl Rey does not already possess. Skywalker, still looking to the horizon. Never here, now, hmmm?

For Rav Yehudah, they broke a wooden table made of ebony [yavna], and for Rabba they broke a bench.

And Abaye said to Rabba: "Didn’t the Master violate the prohibition, 'Do not destroy' (Deuteronomy 20:19)?"

He said to him: "Do not destroy of my body is preferable to me."

Stealing from the bad...and the good

DJ: He says I stole it.

FINN: Yeah, I got that.

DJ: We stole it.

FINN: At least you're stealing from the bad guys and helping the good.

DJ: Good guys, bad guys, made-up words. Let's see who formally owned this gorgeous hunk-uh. Ah, this guy was an arms dealer. Made his bank selling weapons to the bad guys. Oh.... and the good.

It was taught: On that day, Rabbi Eliezer answered all answers in the world, but the Rabbis did not accept from him. He said to them: "If the halakha is in accordance with my opinion, this carob tree will prove it."

The carob tree was uprooted from its place one hundred cubits, and some say four hundred cubits.

The Rabbis said to him: "One does not cite halakhic proof from the carob tree."

Rabbi Eliezer then said to them: "If the halakha is in accordance with my opinion, the stream will prove it."

The water in the stream turned backward and began flowing in the opposite direction.

They said to him: "One does not cite halakhic proof from a stream."

Rabbi Eliezer then said to them: "If the halakha is in accordance with my opinion, the walls of the study hall will prove it."

The walls of the study hall leaned inward and began to fall.

Rabbi Yehoshua scolded the walls and said to them: "If Torah scholars are contending with each other in matters of halakha, what is the nature of your involvement in this dispute?"

They did not fall because of the deference due Rabbi Yehoshua, but they did not straighten because of the deference due Rabbi Eliezer, and they still remain leaning.
