Overview and guiding questions:
Before the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, Jews had a different "technology" to receive forgiveness. Instead of seeking Teshuvah (forgiveness) being an individual responsibility and journey, it was a potentially fatal ritual performed by the Cohein Gadol/High Priest on all of Israel's behalf. On Yom Kippur after doing the ritual with the two goats and sacrificing a bull, the High Priest wash, put on white linen clothing, and enter the Holy of Holies and utter the Holy Name. If everything went right, he would emerge and all of Israel was forgiven. If not, he would die inside the Holy of Holies.
- What would it be like for you to be able to hand over responsibility for your seeking forgiveness to another person, even the High Priest?
- Since the destruction of the Temple, we are individually responsible for our own Teshuvah or repentance. What did we lose in this transition? What did we gain?
- The modern "technology" of Teshuvah - repentance is completely different than the Temple Technology. Why do we retain the Temple version in a central part of the modern service?

(1) The LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron who died when they drew too close to the presence of the LORD. (2) The LORD said to Moses: Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come at will into the Shrine behind the curtain, in front of the cover that is upon the ark, lest he die; for I appear in the cloud over the cover. (3) Thus only shall Aaron enter the Shrine: with a bull of the herd for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.— (4) He shall be dressed in a sacral linen tunic, with linen breeches next to his flesh, and be girt with a linen sash, and he shall wear a linen turban. They are sacral vestments; he shall bathe his body in water and then put them on.
(20) When he has finished purging the Shrine, the Tent of Meeting, and the altar, the live goat shall be brought forward. (21) Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities and transgressions of the Israelites, whatever their sins, putting them on the head of the goat; and it shall be sent off to the wilderness through a designated man. (22) Thus the goat shall carry on it all their iniquities to an inaccessible region; and the goat shall be set free in the wilderness. (23) And Aaron shall go into the Tent of Meeting, take off the linen vestments that he put on when he entered the Shrine, and leave them there. (24) He shall bathe his body in water in the holy precinct and put on his vestments; then he shall come out and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people, making expiation for himself and for the people.
1. What was the role of the common Israelite in the Yom Kippur ritual?
2. What is the role of the Goat that goes to Azazel in theYom Kippur ritual?
3. How did the ritual performed by the High Priest achieve kaparah - expiation - for the People of Israel?

(1) Seven days before Yom HaKippurim they remove the high priest from his house to the chamber of the counselors and they set up another priest to take his place lest something should occur to him to disqualify him [from being able to worship]. Rabbi Judah said: they even prepare another wife for him in case his wife should die, as it says “And he shall make atonement for himself and for his house” (Leviticus 16:6): “his house” this refers to his wife. They said to him: if so there would be no end to the matter.

(6) If he was a sage he would expound, and if not, the disciples of the sages would expound before him. If he was familiar with reading [the Scriptures] he would read, if not they would read before him. From what would they read before him? From Job, Ezra and Chronicles. Zechariah ben Kv’utal says: I have often read before him from Daniel.
(7) If he wished to sleep, young priests would snap their middle finger before him and say: “Sir high priest, stand up and drive the sleep away by standing once on this [cold] floor. They would keep him busy until the time for the slaughtering [of the daily morning offering] would arrive.
(2) He then came to the scapegoat and laid his two hands upon it and he made confession. And thus he would say: “Please, ‘Hashem’! They have done wrong, they have transgressed, they have sinned before You, Your people the House of Israel. Please, in the name of Hashem (Bashem)! Forgive the wrongdoings, the transgressions, the sins which your people, the House of Israel, have committed and transgressed and sinned before You, as it is written in the torah of Moses Your servant: “For on this day shall atonement be made for you [to cleanse you of all your sins; you shall be clean before the Lord”] (Leviticus 16:30). And the priests and the people standing in the courtyard, when they would hear God’s name explicated coming out of the high priest’s mouth, would bend their knees, bow down and fall on their faces and say “Blessed be the name of His glorious kingdom for ever and ever!”
On acts of kindness. How so? It says (Hosea 6:6), “For I desire kindness, not a well-being offering.” The world was created from the very beginning with kindness, as it says (Psalms 89:3), “For I have said that the world will be built on kindness, and the heavens will be established on Your faith.” Once, Rabban [our rabbi] Yohanan ben Zakkai, left Jerusalem, and Rabbi Yehoshua followed after him. And he saw the Holy Temple destroyed. [Rabbi Yehoshua said: Woe to us, for this is destroyed –] the place where all of Israel’s sins are forgiven!2I.e., via the bringing of sacrifices. [Rabbi Yohanan] said to him: My son, do not be distressed, for we have a form of atonement just like it. And what is it? Acts of kindness, as it says (Psalms 89:3), “For I desire kindness, not a well-being offering.”
So what were the acts of kindness he busied himself with? He would help a bride and bring her happiness, he would escort the dead [in a funeral procession], and he would always give a perutah to a poor person. And he would pray three times a day, and his prayers would be gladly accepted . . .
Chevrutah questions:
1. Put yourself in R. Yehoshua's shoes. The Temple, which you believed was the House of the Lord and a necessary part of the Atonement Ritual, is destroyed. How do you go on? In what ways is R. Yochanan ben Zakai's response satisfying? Not satisfying?
2. What role does the Avodah service during Yom Kippur Musaf play in today's Atonement Ritual? Why do you think the Machzor continues to include this section?
3. What does it mean to have a less than knowledgeable (or even sober) High Priest? What happens when we entrust such important functions to a lesser leader?
