הכנעניים היו בארץ מספרים לנו שהכנענים כבר גזלו את סמכותו של שם בארצו, ואברם היה בסיכון לאבד את ההמשכיות בירושת שם לנצח.
The Canaanites were in the land tells us the Canaanites had already usurped Shems authority in his land and Abram was at risk of losing the continuity through Shems inheritance forever.
(7) The LORD appeared to Abram and said, “I will assign this land to your offspring.” And he built an altar there to the LORD who had appeared to him.
אלוקים אישר ישירות כי ירושת האדמה תהיה באמצעות אברם לצאצאיו לעתיד.
G-d directly confirmed the inheritance of land would be through Abram to his future descendants.
(8) From there he moved on to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and he built there an altar to the LORD and invoked the LORD by name.
מיד פנה אברם לסאלם - לשם - מלכי צדק שהתגורר והתאמן בהר המוריה. רש"י מלמד שזה היה בית אל (מירובם מצפון לירושלים), אך המקום הראשון שאברם הקים לשראי בית היה מזרחית לשם (שהיה בסאלם, בית אל שיעקב מאוחר יותר יאשר מחדש בהר המוריה).
Immediately Abram headed to Salem - to Shem - Malchi Tzedek who was living and practicing on Mount Moriah. Rashi teaches it was Beit El (of Yerovam north of Jerusalem), but the first place Abram made a home for Sarai was east of Shem (who was at Salem, Beit El that Jacob would later re-confirm on Mount Moriah).

לָג֣וּר is the first hint at their mission to rescue and convert an influential soul. Abram and Sarai had already engaged in educating people about one G-d. Abram's rebellion against pluralism was the root of G-d's instruction to journey away from his native land, from his fathers house. Abram and Sarai were on a joint mission to educate people. But there was a people drought in the land and the Canaanites had been cursed (Genesis 9:25). The Canaanites were the inducted enemy of Ham against his brother Shem.

This commences Abram and Sarai's strategic plan to rescue a soul from Ham (Pharaoh) and bring it over from the side of pluralism to the 'other side' the side of the Ivri (meaning 'other side'), the Hebrew to believe in one G-d.
(יב) וְהָיָ֗ה כִּֽי־יִרְא֤וּ אֹתָךְ֙ הַמִּצְרִ֔ים וְאָמְר֖וּ אִשְׁתּ֣וֹ זֹ֑את וְהָרְג֥וּ אֹתִ֖י וְאֹתָ֥ךְ יְחַיּֽוּ׃

וְהָרְג֥וּ If the Egyptians saw that Abram was self interested they would kill him. That would conflict with their mission and purpose to convert the soul of a self-interested Egyptian to a selfless G-d fearing individual that would begin the transition of people trapped under Ham's self-serving logic. רְג֥ is the source of this self-interest, whereas the reversal ג֣ר is conversion to selflessness.
המשימה כבר הצליחה כראיה בכך שפרעה שלח את בתו שאנו מכירים מתורה כגר, זו שעברה לצד השני ועזבה את מצרים עם שערי ואברם.
The mission was already successful as evidence by Pharaoh sending his daughter who we know from Torah as Hagar, the one who came over to the other side and left Egypt with Sarai and Abram.
(א) וְשָׂרַי֙ אֵ֣שֶׁת אַבְרָ֔ם לֹ֥א יָלְדָ֖ה ל֑וֹ וְלָ֛הּ שִׁפְחָ֥ה מִצְרִ֖ית וּשְׁמָ֥הּ הָגָֽר׃
הָגָֽר הגר הוא האדם הראשון שהתגייר להאמין באחדותו של אלוקים אחד, לעבור מתרבות של אינטרס עצמי ומלביש את עצמה בחוסר אנוכיות. משימה לא קלה לאף אחד, אבל הגר הולידה את אומה ישמעאל לאברהם ואחרי פטירתה של שרה אברהם חזר אליה והיא המשיכה להוליד איתו פחות מדינות אינטרסנטיות.
הָגָֽר Hagar is the first person to convert to the believe in the unity of one G-d, to move from a culture of self-interest and vest herself in selflessness. Not an easy mission for anyone, but Hagar birthed the nation of Ishmael to Abraham and after Sarah's passing Abraham returned to her and she continued to birth less self-interested nations with him.
