(23) That same night he arose, and taking his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven children, he crossed the ford of the Jabbok. (24) After taking them across the stream, he sent across all his possessions. (25) Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the break of dawn. (26) When he saw that he had not prevailed against him, he wrenched Jacob’s hip at its socket, so that the socket of his hip was strained as he wrestled with him. (27) Then he said, “Let me go, for dawn is breaking.” But he answered, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.” (28) Said the other, “What is your name?” He replied, “Jacob.” (29) Said he, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with beings divine and human, and have prevailed.” (30) Jacob asked, “Pray tell me your name.” But he said, “You must not ask my name!” And he took leave of him there. (31) So Jacob named the place Peniel, meaning, “I have seen a divine being face to face, yet my life has been preserved.” (32) The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping on his hip.
(א) לא יעקב לֹא יֵאָמֵר עוֹד שֶׁהַבְּרָכוֹת בָּאוּ לְךָ בְּעָקְבָה וּרְמִיָּה כִּי אִם בִשְׂרָרָה וְגִלּוּי פָּנִים...
(1) לא יעקב- It shall no longer be said that the blessings came to you through deceit and trickery, but through noble conduct and in an open manner...
(י) וַיֹּֽאמֶר־ל֥וֹ אֱלֹהִ֖ים שִׁמְךָ֣ יַעֲקֹ֑ב לֹֽא־יִקָּרֵא֩ שִׁמְךָ֨ ע֜וֹד יַעֲקֹ֗ב כִּ֤י אִם־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ יִהְיֶ֣ה שְׁמֶ֔ךָ וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

שאמר הכתוב לא יעקב יאמר עוד שמך וגו'...כלומר לא יאמרו עוד שקבלת הברכות במרמה אלא בשררה ודין. וכן לא יאמרו שרמית את לבן כי אם באמת ובתמים עשית מה שעשית. אלו הם הענינים שבשבילם נתנה מדת האמת ליעקב.

(On Yaakov's trait of truthfulness)
As the verse says, "Your name shall no longer be said, 'Yaakov'"... that is to say, they will no longer say that you received the blessings by trickery, but rather, by nobility and lawfully. And similarly, they won't say that you tricked Laban, but rather did what you did with truth and purity. These are the issues for which the trait of truthfulness was given to Yaakov.

The angel does not tell Jacob his name, but blesses him.

(א) בן אוני. על שם מעשה דפלגש בגבעה שעתיד לצאת עד שם:
(1) בן אוני, “son of my sorrow;” she foresaw the tragedy involving the tribe of Benjamin in a civil war described in Judges chapters 19-21.
(י) ותמת רחל ותקבר, בדרך אפרת היא בית לחם מה ראה אבינו יעקב לקבור את רחל בדרך אפרת? אלא, צפה יעקב אבינו, שהגליות עתידות לעבור שם, לפיכך קברה שם, כדי שתהא מבקשת עליהם רחמים. הה"ד (שם): קול ברמה נשמע, נהי בכי תמרורים, רחל מבכה על בניה וגו' כה אמר ה' מנעי קולך מבכי וגו' ויש תקוה לאחריתך וגו':
"And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Efrat, this is Beit-Lechem" What did Yaakov see that he buried Rachel in the way to Efrat? He had a prophetic vision that the exiles would in the future pass through there, therefore he buried her there, so she would ask for mercy for them - so it is written "A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping, Rachel is weeping for her children ... Thus says Ad-nai: Refrain your voice from weeping... there is hope for your future, etc.
