Reparations in the Exodus Story

The willingness of the dominant group to make reparations is a strong indicator of the changed social status of the oppressed group.

(2) Tell the people to borrow, each man from his neighbor and each woman from hers, objects of silver and gold.” (3) The LORD disposed the Egyptians favorably toward the people. Moreover, Moses himself was much esteemed in the land of Egypt, among Pharaoh’s courtiers and among the people.

This source indicates that the former slave is entitled to reparations.

שלשת ימים — ...And why did He bring darkness upon them? ... And a further reason is that the Israelites searched and saw the Egyptians’ jewels, and when they were leaving Egypt and asked them for their jewels, and they replied, “We have none at all in our possession”, they answered them, “I have seen it in your house and it is in such and such a place” (cf. Midrash Tanchuma, Bo 1; Exodus Rabbah 14:3).

This source lifts up the role of reparations in inducing a change of attitude, or teshuvah. The primary positive impact of reparations may be on the former enslaver rather than on the former slave.

"And YHVH said to Moses, 'Hold out your hand...'" (Exodus 10:12) - Why did He bring locusts upon them? Because they had made Israel sowers of wheat and barley, therefore He brought upon them locusts and they ate all that Israel had sown for them. "And Moses held out his staff [over the land of Egypt, and YHVH drove an east wind over the land all that day and the night]..." (Exodus 10:13) Why did the Holy One Blessed Be He make the time for the plagues tomorrow and He didn't bring them immediately? So that through the plague they would turn back and repent. "
