Why is this important?
The distribution of roots gives us an idea of what is specially in that book. Vayikra does not want us just to be "good people" Vayikra sets its vision much higher - it is calling us to be KODESH.
A cursory search for the root in Torah gives the following results:
Genesis | 7 - and two are the word kedesha
Exodus | 65 | ||
Leviticus | 152, greatest occurance 4 in one verse
Numbers | 90, same greatest = 4 ; 8 verses deal with Kadesh-Barnea
Deuteronomy | 22; greatest 1, 5 verses deal with Kadesh-Barnea |
Total numbers ~ Verses:
Torah | 5853 | ||
Genesis | 1533 | ||
Exodus | 1213 | ||
Leviticus | 859 | ||
Numbers | 1289 | ||
Deuteronomy | 959 |
Distribution (ie, number of occurrences divided by number of verses)
Genesis = 0.00456
Exodus = 0.05358
Leviticus = 0.17694
Numbers = 0.06983
Deuteronomy = 0.022940
~ The book of Leviticus not only sets the bar higher, but it has the root kuf-dalet-shin as its main center. For all the difficulty of understanding the worldview of Vayikra, and the sacrificial system, one thing is sure - our behavior as Jews is supposed to be essentially different.
