Pinchas: Saint or Sinner?

Bilaam foretold that Israel would utterly destroy Moab. This, of course, is what Balak feared.

(15) He took up his theme, and said: Word of Balaam son of Beor, Word of the man whose eye is true, (16) Word of him who hears God’s speech, Who obtains knowledge from the Most High, And beholds visions from the Almighty, Prostrate, but with eyes unveiled: (17) What I see for them is not yet, What I behold will not be soon: A star rises from Jacob, A scepter comes forth from Israel; It smashes the brow of Moab, The foundation of all children of Seth.

The parsha ends with both parties, Balak and Bilaam, going to their respective countries.

Bilaam has exited from this scene; he is not involved in the subsequent episode (ch.25).

(כה) וַיָּ֣קׇם בִּלְעָ֔ם וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ וַיָּ֣שׇׁב לִמְקֹמ֑וֹ וְגַם־בָּלָ֖ק הָלַ֥ךְ לְדַרְכּֽוֹ׃ {פ}
(25) Then Balaam set out on his journey back home; and Balak also went his way.

In the next episode, the Israelites are seduced by the Moabite women. Israel brings about their own destruction, an end which which Bilaam could not produce. It is an ironic counterpoint to the preceding Bilaam sequence.

(1) While Israel was staying at Shittim, the people profaned themselves by whoring with the Moabite women, (2) who invited the people to the sacrifices for their god. The people partook of them and worshiped that god. (3) Thus Israel attached itself to Baal-peor, and the LORD was incensed with Israel.

This first association between Israel and a pagan nation ends in disaster. The verses in the Humash suggest a link between the social connection with a gentile people, and the subsequent sexual and cultic behaviors. These events seem to fulfill the warning stated in the aftermath of the Golden Calf event.

(11) Mark well what I command you this day. I will drive out before you the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. (12) Beware of making a covenant with the inhabitants of the land against which you are advancing, lest they be a snare in your midst.

(15) You must not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for they will lust after their gods and sacrifice to their gods and invite you, and you will eat of their sacrifices. (16) And when you take wives from among their daughters for your sons, their daughters will lust after their gods and will cause your sons to lust after their gods. (17) You shall not make molten gods for yourselves.

Numbers 25 presents three reactions to the apostasy with Moab - by God, Moshe and Pinchas.

(4) The LORD said to Moses, “Take all the ringleaders and have them publicly impaled before the LORD, so that the LORD’s wrath may turn away from Israel.”

(5) So Moses said to Israel’s officials, “Each of you slay those of his men who attached themselves to Baal-peor.”

(6) Just then one of the Israelites came and brought a Midianite woman over to his companions, in the sight of Moses and of the whole Israelite community who were weeping at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.

(7) When Phinehas, son of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, saw this, he left the assembly and, taking a spear in his hand, (8) he followed the Israelite into the chamber and stabbed both of them, the Israelite and the woman, through the belly. Then the plague against the Israelites was checked. (9) Those who died of the plague numbered twenty-four thousand.

God's reaction to the sinning of the Israelites

(4) The LORD said to Moses, “Take all the ringleaders and have them publicly impaled before the LORD, so that the LORD’s wrath may turn away from Israel.”

Hazal were not comfortable with God's plan, if taken literally.

(1) (Numb. 25:4:) “Take all the heads of the people, and impale them [before the Lord in the sun].”

R. Judan said, “He hanged the heads of the people, because they had not protested about the people who stood out among them like the sun.”

R. Nehemiah said, “He did not hang them. Rather the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moses, ‘Appoint Sanhedrin heads for them, and let them judge whoever went to Peor....’

God's prior response to apostasy and rebellion.

His reaction to the rebellion by Korach

(10) “Remove yourselves from this community, that I may annihilate them in an instant.” They fell on their faces. (11) Then Moses said to Aaron, “Take the fire pan, and put on it fire from the altar. Add incense and take it quickly to the community and make expiation for them. For wrath has gone forth from the LORD: the plague has begun!”

(12) Aaron took it, as Moses had ordered, and ran to the midst of the congregation, where the plague had begun among the people. He put on the incense and made expiation for the people; (13) he stood between the dead and the living until the plague was checked. (14) Those who died of the plague came to fourteen thousand and seven hundred, aside from those who died on account of Korah. (15) Aaron then returned to Moses at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, since the plague was checked.

Note the actions of the Levites after the Golden Calf

(25) Moses saw that the people were out of control—since Aaron had let them get out of control—so that they were a menace to any who might oppose them. (26) Moses stood up in the gate of the camp and said, “Whoever is for the LORD, come here!” And all the Levites rallied to him. (27) He said to them, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Each of you put sword on thigh, go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay brother, neighbor, and kin.” (28) The Levites did as Moses had bidden; and some three thousand of the people fell that day. (29) And Moses said, “Dedicate yourselves to the LORD this day—for each of you has been against son and brother—that He may bestow a blessing upon you today.

Moshe's reaction to the seduction by the pagan women.

Does it accord with God's directions?

(5) So Moses said to Israel’s officials, “Each of you slay those of his men who attached themselves to Baal-peor.”

An extreme illustration of the Israelite apostasy.

How does Moshe react?

(6) Just then one of the Israelites came and brought a Midianite woman over to his companions, in the sight of Moses and of the whole Israelite community who were weeping at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.

The classical late-Medieval commentaries debated the nature of his behavior.

(1) AND BROUGHT UNTO HIS BRETHREN. He gave her to his family.

(1) ויקרב אל אחיו, in order to seduce her, in violation of Leviticus 18,6 that revealing private parts of members of the opposite sex is also forbidden.

THE MIDIANITISH WOMAN — Kozbi the daughter of Zur. BEFORE THE EYES OF MOSES — They said to him: “Moses, is this Midianite woman forbidden or permissible as a wife. If you say she is forbidden, then who made Jethro’s daughter, a Midianite woman, permissible to you, etc.” as is related there (Sanhedrin 82a).

AND THEY WERE WEEPING — the law (decision on this matter) escaped him and therefore they all burst out into weeping (Sanhedrin 82a). — In the case of the golden calf Moses successfully resisted six hundred thousand men, as it is said, (Exodus 32:20) “And he ground it to powder [and he made the children of Israel drink of it]”, and here his hands were weak (he did not know what to do)?! But this was intentionally caused by God in order that Phineas might come and receive that which was meant for him (Midrash Tanchuma, Balak 20).

The response of Pinchas.

What is the function of his action and can it be justified ethically?

Pinchas is rewarded for his action.

(10) The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, (11) “Phinehas, son of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the Israelites by displaying among them his passion for Me, so that I did not wipe out the Israelite people in My passion. (12) Say, therefore, ‘I grant him My pact of friendship. (13) It shall be for him and his descendants after him a pact of priesthood for all time, because he took impassioned action for his God, thus making expiation for the Israelites.’”

(14) The name of the Israelite who was killed, the one who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri son of Salu, chieftain of a Simeonite ancestral house. (15) The name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi daughter of Zur; he was the tribal head of an ancestral house in Midian.

(16) The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, (17) “Assail the Midianites and defeat them— (18) for they assailed you by the trickery they practiced against you—because of the affair of Peor and because of the affair of their kinswoman Cozbi, daughter of the Midianite chieftain, who was killed at the time of the plague on account of Peor.”

Postscript:

According to Numbers 31, Bilaam induced Midian to seduce Israel.

The image of "Bilaam as Sinner" is probably based upon this verse, although his role in Israel's downfall is not reflected in any way in Numbers 25.
