Va'etchanan 2021 Rav L'chah: you have so much!

(23) I asked for extra grace from the Holy One at that time, saying, (24) “O Lord G*D, You who let Your servant begin to see the works of Your greatness and Your mighty hand, You whose powerful deeds no god in heaven or on earth can equal! (25) Let me please cross over and see the good land on the other side of the Jordan, that good hill country, and the Lebanon.” (26) But the Holy One was wrathful with me on your account and would not listen to me. The Holy One said to me, “You have so much! Never speak to Me of this matter again!

The words רב לך (Rav L'chah: you have so much!( may also be G'd's answer to Moses' offer to immediately resign his position so as not to conflict with the period during which Joshua was to reign. G'd answered that Moses could not do this as the position allocated to him was a lifetime position. He had to remain king as long as he was alive. Crossing the Jordan as a private citizen was out of the question. He could not transfer his status to Joshua during his lifetime. The words אל תוסף דבר are essential then.

LET IT BE ENOUGH FOR YOU! (i.e. pray no more), so that people should not say, “How harsh is the Master, and how obstinate and importunate is the disciple" (Sotah 13b). Another explanation of רב לך (lit., there is much for you) — more than this is reserved for you; much is the goodness that is stored up for thee (Sifrei Bamidbar 135).

וראה בעיניך, "and behold it with your eyes." The word בעיניך is necessary especially after G'd had told Moses שא עיניך "raise up your eyes!" G'd meant to tell Moses that whatever he had hoped to accomplish by walking in the land, He, G'd would enable him to accomplish by means of his eyes alone. There was no need for him to traverse the land in order to become familiar with it.

(36) none except Caleb son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him and his descendants will I give the land on which he set foot, because he remained filled after (encountering) the Holy One.

(3) And one would call to the other, “Holy, holy, holy! The LORD of Hosts! G!d's presence fills all the earth!”

Rabbi Marcia Prager, on Isaiah/ Reading for Shabbat Hazon, July, 24, 2020: This is Isaiah's hope for us "m'lo chol ha-aretz k'vodo", that we see and cherish the holiness of the world, and make it so...there is no place where G!d is not. This is the shimmering just beneath the surface of reality that is sometimes called the Third Temple....but this is not one made of stone. The vision of the third Temple is one not seen with our eyes, but with our souls...and the question that Shabbat Hazon asks of us is: what are you willing to let your soul see?....a world at peace? a world that has realized its Divine potential for... goodness, enough for everyone? real equality and justice for all? Can your soul see it...enough to make it real?

וזכרת כי עבד היית, "remember that you used to be a slave, etc." These are Moses' words. Moses meant that the Sabbath legislation also contains an element which relates it to the Exodus. When someone rests and does not have to perform labour for someone else he will feel that it was G'd who enabled His people to rest up from all its problems and he will concentrate on gladly accepting the laws given by G'd who took the people out of that particular bondage.

In this second telling of the "Ten Commandments" Shabbat is symbolized by liberation, whereas in the first telling Shabbat was in resonance with the pattern of G*d's creating of Eden. Either way on Shabbat we live in gratitude. Shabbat is the fulfillment of the journey in time and freedom

AND YOU SHALL LOVE [THE HOLY ONE] — Fulfill G*d's commands out of love, for one who acts out of love is not like him (is on a higher plane than one) who acts out of fear. He who serves his master out of fear, if he (the master) troubles him overmuch, leaves him and goes away (Sifrei Devarim 32:1).

Shema Yisrael: Listen up You G!d wrestlers: V’ahavta: we are here to add our love to the world. Love is the fulfillment of our journey, as we approach TuB’av , 15th of AV, the holiday of Love

(8) Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel said: There were no days as joyous for the Jewish people as the fifteenth of Av and as Yom Kippur, as on them the daughters of Jerusalem would go out in white clothes,...And the daughters of Jerusalem would go out and dance in the vineyards. And what would they say? Young man, please lift up your eyes and see what you choose for yourself for a wife. Do not set your eyes toward beauty, but set your eyes toward a good family, as the verse states: “Grace is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised” (Proverbs 31:30), and it further says: “Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates” ...

(16) He [Rabbi Tarfon] used to say: It is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to neglect it;

Pirke avot tells us–the time is short, the work is great. We may not get to finish the work, but we can add our love to our small part of the world, with the time we have, and savor the time. Knowing tomorrow is not promised, can liberate, has liberated me to follow my heart’s dream. may we love, be liberated, take a deep breath, and know how much we already have.
