(4) There is no difference between a roof or anything else that is dangerous and likely to cause death to a person who might stumble. If, for instance, one has a well or a pit in his courtyard — — he must build an enclosing ring ten handbreadths high, or put a cover over it, so that a person should not fall into it and die. So too, any obstruction that is a danger to life must be removed as a matter of positive duty and extremely necessary caution.

When the LORD God made earth and heaven—
"[I]f your circuits are overwhelmed there’s a reason and the reason isn’t because you are heartless, it’s because there is not a human heart on this planet that can bear all of what it happening right now. So thank you for being a person who cares about and responds to animals, or the environment, or immigration, or domestic violence or any of the other worthy-to-be-cared-about s**t-shows we are in the midst of right now. Just, thank you."

(8) When you (sing.) build a new house, you shall make a parapet for your (sing.) roof, so that you do not bring bloodguilt on your house if anyone should fall from it.
(16) He [Rabbi Tarfon] used to say: It is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to neglect it.
May our Merciful God give us the tools of discernment we need during this time of Cheshbon HaNefesh, of soul-searching, as we prepare for the Days of Awe and Holy Judgment. Not so that we can judge ourselves harshly for not being able to do All. Of. The. Things. All. Of. The. Time. But so we can judge between those things that are our own roofs, for which we bear responsibility, and those which are not, in this time of information overload. May the coming Shabbat of Shabbats bring us the renewed strength we need to see the goodness in what we create. May our Compassionate God spread a Sukkat Shalom, a shelter of peace, over us and all we love in the coming year, creating a protecting - and safe - roof for all of us. And may the new year be one of peace, of health, and of sweetness for you and those you love. Ken Yehi Ratzon - may it be so.
