Parashat HaShavua 5782: Noach

(כא) וַיִּגְוַ֞ע כׇּל־בָּשָׂ֣ר ׀ הָרֹמֵ֣שׂ עַל־הָאָ֗רֶץ בָּע֤וֹף וּבַבְּהֵמָה֙ וּבַ֣חַיָּ֔ה וּבְכׇל־הַשֶּׁ֖רֶץ הַשֹּׁרֵ֣ץ עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ וְכֹ֖ל הָאָדָֽם׃ (כב) כֹּ֡ל אֲשֶׁר֩ נִשְׁמַת־ר֨וּחַ חַיִּ֜ים בְּאַפָּ֗יו מִכֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר בֶּחָֽרָבָ֖ה מֵֽתוּ׃ (כג) וַיִּ֜מַח אֶֽת־כׇּל־הַיְק֣וּם ׀ אֲשֶׁ֣ר ׀ עַל־פְּנֵ֣י הָֽאֲדָמָ֗ה מֵאָדָ֤ם עַד־בְּהֵמָה֙ עַד־רֶ֙מֶשׂ֙ וְעַד־ע֣וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וַיִּמָּח֖וּ מִן־הָאָ֑רֶץ וַיִּשָּׁ֧אֶר אַךְ־נֹ֛חַ וַֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר אִתּ֖וֹ בַּתֵּבָֽה׃

(21) And all flesh that stirred on earth perished—birds, cattle, beasts, and all the things that swarmed upon the earth, and all mankind. (22) All in whose nostrils was the merest breath of life, all that was on dry land, died. (23) All existence on earth was blotted out—man, cattle, creeping things, and birds of the sky; they were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.
ומלת ויגוע מיתה ובפי' ויגוע וימת אבאר לך זה. והנה ברור לך שמלת רמש כלל לעוף ולבהמה ולחיה ולשרץ שהוא דק ולאדם. ויתכן להיות כל אשר נשמת רוח חיים באפיו שב אל האדם כי לא מצאנו נשמה חוץ מנשמת האדם. ורבים אמרו שנקרא' כן בעבור שהוא מן השמים ואם הם שני שרשים ימצא כמוהו:
[PERISHED.] Va-yigva (perished) means died. I will explain the exact meaning of this term when I comment on And Abraham expired (va-yigva), and died (Gen. 25:8). It is clear that remes (creeping thing) is a general term that includes fowl, cattle, animals, small thin swarming things and man. It is possible that all in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life (v. 22) refers to every man (v. 21), as we do not find the expression neshamah (breath) used in reference to any creature except man. Many say that the soul is termed neshamah because it comes from the heaven (shamayim). The fact that shamayim and neshamah have differing roots does not refute the latter interpretation because there are other similar instances.
(ח) וַיִּגְוַ֨ע וַיָּ֧מׇת אַבְרָהָ֛ם בְּשֵׂיבָ֥ה טוֹבָ֖ה זָקֵ֣ן וְשָׂבֵ֑עַ וַיֵּאָ֖סֶף אֶל־עַמָּֽיו׃
(8) And Abraham breathed his last, dying at a good ripe age, old and contented; and he was gathered to his kin.
מלת ויגוע. צאת הרוח מהגוף רגע אחד בלי ענוי ועכוב. הלא תראה ויאסוף רגליו אל המטה ומיד גוע. והנה כל גויעה מיתה ואין כל מיתה גויעה על כן כתוב במבול ויגוע:
[AND ABRAHAM EXPIRED.] Expired refers to a death wherein the soul leaves the body in a moment, without pain or delay. Proof of this is he (Jacob) gathered up his feet unto the bed and then immediately expired (Gen. 49:33). Every expiration (gevi’ah) is a death, but not every death is an expiration (gevi’ah). Hence Scripture states, with regard to those who perished in the flood, And all flesh expired (Gen. 7:21).

(ד) אָמַר רַבִּי בְּרַכְיָה, קָשִׁים הָיוּ מְאֹד וּבַעֲלֵי קוֹמָה, שֶׁכָּךְ כְּתִיב בָּהֶן, הֵמָּה הַגִּבֹּרִים (בראשית ו, ד). וְאִלּוּלֵי שֶׁפָּרַע מֵהֶם בָּאֵשׁ מִלְמַעְלָן, אֵין בְּרִיָּה יְכוֹלָה לָהֶן, שֶׁכָּךְ אִיּוֹב אוֹמֵר, אִם לֹא נִכְחַד קִימָנוּ וְיִתְרָם אָכְלָה אֵשׁ (איוב כב, כ).

(4) R. Berechiah said: The men of the generation of the flood were exceedingly strong and tall, as it is written: These same were the mighty men (Gen. 6:4), and if He had not punished them with fire that descended from above, nothing would have been able to destroy them. Hence Job said: Surely their substance is cut off, and their abundance the fire hath consumed (Job 22:20).

(ד) הַנְּפִלִ֞ים הָי֣וּ בָאָ֘רֶץ֮ בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵם֒ וְגַ֣ם אַֽחֲרֵי־כֵ֗ן אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָבֹ֜אוּ בְּנֵ֤י הָֽאֱלֹקִים֙ אֶל־בְּנ֣וֹת הָֽאָדָ֔ם וְיָלְד֖וּ לָהֶ֑ם הֵ֧מָּה הַגִּבֹּרִ֛ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר מֵעוֹלָ֖ם אַנְשֵׁ֥י הַשֵּֽׁם׃ {פ}
(4) It was then, and later too, that the Nephilim appeared on earth—when the divine beings cohabited with the daughters of men, who bore them offspring. They were the heroes of old, the men of renown.

(ה) כֵּיוָן שֶׁרָאָה הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא שֶׁלֹּא נִשְׁטְפוּ קוֹמָתָן בִּתְהוֹמוֹת שֶׁלְּמַטָּן, הוֹרִיד עֲלֵיהֶם אֵשׁ מִן הַשָּׁמַיִם, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וְיִתְרָם אָכְלָה אֵשׁ. וְלֹא עוֹד אֶלָּא שֶׁהָפַךְ עֲלֵיהֶם הָעוֹף וְהַבְּהֵמָה וְהַחַיָּה וְהֵן גִּוְּעוּ אוֹתָם, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וַיִּגְוַע כָּל בָּשָׂר הָרֹמֵשׂ וְגוֹ', בַּמֶּה, בָּעוֹף וּבַבְּהֵמָה וּבַחַיָּה. כֵּיוָן שֶׁהָיוּ רוֹאִין עַצְמָן שֶׁהֵן אוֹבְדִין, הָיוּ מְבַקְשִׁין לַהֲפֹךְ אֶת הַתֵּבָה. מֶה עָשָׂה הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, הִקִּיף אֶת הַתֵּבָה אֲרָיוֹת, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וַיִּסְגֹּר יי בַּעֲדוֹ. וְאֵין וַיִּסְגֹּר אֶלָּא אֲרָיוֹת, כְּמָה דְּאַתְּ אֲמַר: שְׁלַח מַלְאֲכֵהּ וּסֲגַר פֻּם אַרְיָוָתָא (דניאל ו, כג).

(5) After the Holy One, blessed be He, realized that they would not be drowned by the waters that gushed forth from the deep because of their height, He sent the fire upon them from above, as it is said: And their abundance the fire hath consumed. Furthermore, He turned the birds, the wild beasts, and the animals against them to reduce their numbers, as it says: And all flesh perished that moved upon the earth, the birds, the animals, and the beasts, etc. (Gen. 7:21). How did they perish? It was through the birds, the beasts, and the animals. When at long last they realized that they were about to be destroyed, they attempted to overturn the ark. What did the Holy One, blessed be He, do? He surrounded the ark with lions, as it is said: The Lord shut them in (Gen. 7:16). The word shut in Scripture alludes to lions. How do we know this? We know it from the verse My God hath sent His angels and hath shut the lion’s mouth (Dan. 6:23).

(טז) וְהַבָּאִ֗ים זָכָ֨ר וּנְקֵבָ֤ה מִכׇּל־בָּשָׂר֙ בָּ֔אוּ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה אֹת֖וֹ אֱלֹקִ֑ים וַיִּסְגֹּ֥ר יי בַּֽעֲדֽוֹ׃

(16) Thus they that entered male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him. And the LORD shut him in.

(כב) כֹּ֡ל אֲשֶׁר֩ נִשְׁמַת־ר֨וּחַ חַיִּ֜ים בְּאַפָּ֗יו מִכֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר בֶּחָֽרָבָ֖ה מֵֽתוּ׃
(22) All in whose nostrils was the merest breath of life, all that was on dry land, died.

תָּנוּ רַבָּנַן: עַד הֵיכָן הוּא בּוֹדֵק? עַד חוֹטְמוֹ. וְיֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים: עַד לִבּוֹ.

The Rabbis taught: If a person is buried under a collapsed building, until what point does one check to clarify whether the victim is still alive? They said: One clears until the victim’s nose. And some say: One clears until the victim’s heart to check for a heartbeat.

(א)צֵא מִן הַתֵּבָה. זֶה שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב: הוֹצִיאָה מִמַּסְגֵּר נַפְשִׁי לְהוֹדוֹת אֶת שְׁמֶךָ בִּי יַכְתִּרוּ צַדִּיקִים כִּי תִגְמֹל עָלָי (תהלים קמב, ח). הוֹצִיאָה מִמַּסְגֵּר נַפְשִׁי, שֶׁהָיָה נֹחַ סָגוּר בַּתֵּבָה. אָמַר רַבִּי לֵוִי, כָּל אוֹתָן שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר חֹדֶשׁ לֹא טָעַם טַעַם שֵׁנָה, לֹא נֹחַ וְלֹא בָנָיו, שֶׁהָיוּ זְקוּקִין לָזוּן אֶת הַבְּהֵמָה וְאֶת הַחַיָּה וְאֶת הָעוֹפוֹת. רַבִּי עֲקִיבָא אוֹמֵר, אֲפִלּוּ שְׁבִשְׁתִּין לְפִילִין וּזְכוּכִיּוֹת לְנַעֲמִיּוֹת הִכְנִיסוּ בְיָדָן לָזוּן אוֹתָן. יֵשׁ בְּהֵמָה שֶׁאוֹכֶלֶת לִשְׁתֵּי שָׁעוֹת בַּלַּיְלָה, וְיֵשׁ אוֹכֶלֶת לִשְׁלֹשָׁה.

(ב) תֵּדַע לְךָ, שֶׁלֹּא טָעֲמוּ טַעַם שֵׁנָה, דְּאָמַר רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן בְּשֵׁם רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר בְּרַבִּי יוֹסִי הַגְּלִילִי, פַּעַם אַחַת שֶׁהָיָה נֹחַ לָזוּן אֶת הָאֲרִי, הִכִּישׁוֹ הָאֲרִי וְיָצָא צוֹלֵעַ, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וַיִּשָּׁאֶר אַךְ נֹחַ. אַךְ, שֶׁלֹּא הָיָה שָׁלֵם וְלֹא הָיָה כָּשֵׁר לְהַקְרִיב קָרְבָּן וְהִקְרִיב שֵׁם בְּנוֹ תַּחְתָּיו. וְעָלָיו נֶאֱמַר, הֵן צַדִּיק בָּאָרֶץ יְשֻׁלָּם (משלי יא, לא).

(ג) רַב הוּנָא בְּשֵׁם רַבִּי יוֹסִי אָמַר, יָצָא גוֹנֵחַ וְכוֹהֶה דָם מִן הַצִּנָּה. לְפִיכָךְ הוּא אוֹמֵר, הוֹצִיאָה מִמַּסְגֵּר נַפְשִׁי וְגוֹ' בִּי יַכְתִּירוּ צַדִּיקִים. שֶׁבִּי נוֹטֵל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא כֶּתֶר, שֶׁאוֹמֵר, וּמָה, נֹחַ שֶׁהָיָה צַדִּיק וְלֹא הָיָה צַדִּיק שָׁלֵם, כָּךְ עָשָׂה לוֹ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא נִסִּים, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: יְמַלֵּט אִי נָקִי (איוב כב, ל), וְלֹא נָקִי. אִם הָיָה צַדִּיק גָּמוּר, עַל אַחַת כַּמָּה וְכַמָּה.

(1) Go forth from the ark (Gen. 8:16). Scripture says elsewhere in allusion to this verse: Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks to Thy name; the righteous shall crown themselves because of me; for Thou wilt deal bountifully with me (Ps. 142:8). Bring my soul out of prison refers to Noah, who was imprisoned in the ark. R. Levi said: Neither Noah nor his sons were able to sleep during the entire twelve months (in the ark) because they were obliged to feed the animals, the beasts, and the birds. R. Akiba stated that they even brought into the ark tree branches for the elephants and glass beads for the ostriches. Some of the animals had to be fed at the second hour in the night and others at the third hour of the night.

(2) Further proof that they did not sleep is presented to us by R. Yohanan. He tells us in the name of R. Eliezer the son of R. Yosé the Galilean that because Noah once delayed feeding a lion, the lion bit him so severely that he left the ark crippled, as it is said: And only Noah was left (Gen. 7:23). The word ah (“only,” also “to be afflicted”) indicates that his body was no longer whole. He became, thereby, unfit to bring sacrifices to the altar, and his son Shem had to do it in his stead. Concerning him it is said: Behold, the righteous shall be made whole in the earth (Prov. 11:31).

(3) R. Huna said in the name of R. Yosé: He left the ark coughing and spitting blood because of a cold he had contracted, and it is for this reason that Scripture states: Bring out of prison my soul … the righteous shall crown themselves because of Me (Ps. 142:8), that is, through me the Holy One blessed be He took a crown. They shall reason: Though Noah was righteous, he was not wholly righteous. The Holy One, blessed be He, nevertheless performed miracles in his behalf, as it is said: He delivereth him that is innocent (Job 22:30). In this verse i-naki (“innocent”) should be interpreted as velo naki, that is, he was not wholly righteous. How many more miracles would He have performed in his behalf if he had been wholly righteous!

וְלֹא אֶת הַלּוּף. תָּנוּ רַבָּנַן: מְטַלְטְלִין אֶת הֶחָצָב מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא מַאֲכָל לִצְבָיִים, וְאֶת הַחַרְדָּל מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא מַאֲכָל לְיוֹנִים. רַבָּן שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן גַּמְלִיאֵל אוֹמֵר: אַף מְטַלְטְלִין שִׁבְרֵי זְכוּכִית מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא מַאֲכָל לְנַעֲמִיּוֹת.
We learned in the mishna: Nor may one move arum on Shabbat. The Sages taught in a Tosefta: One may move squill on Shabbat because it is food for deer and mustard because it is food for doves. Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says: One may even move glass shards because they are food for ostriches.
(כ) וַיִּ֥בֶן נֹ֛חַ מִזְבֵּ֖חַ לַֽיי וַיִּקַּ֞ח מִכֹּ֣ל ׀ הַבְּהֵמָ֣ה הַטְּהֹרָ֗ה וּמִכֹּל֙ הָע֣וֹף הַטָּה֔וֹר וַיַּ֥עַל עֹלֹ֖ת בַּמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ (כא) וַיָּ֣רַח יי אֶת־רֵ֣יחַ הַנִּיחֹ֒חַ֒ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יי אֶל־לִבּ֗וֹ לֹֽא־אֹ֠סִ֠ף לְקַלֵּ֨ל ע֤וֹד אֶת־הָֽאֲדָמָה֙ בַּעֲב֣וּר הָֽאָדָ֔ם כִּ֠י יֵ֣צֶר לֵ֧ב הָאָדָ֛ם רַ֖ע מִנְּעֻרָ֑יו וְלֹֽא־אֹסִ֥ף ע֛וֹד לְהַכּ֥וֹת אֶת־כׇּל־חַ֖י כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִֽׂיתִי׃
(20) Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and, taking of every clean animal and of every clean bird, he offered burnt offerings on the altar. (21) The LORD smelled the pleasing odor, and the LORD said to Himself: “Never again will I doom the earth because of man, since the devisings of man’s mind are evil from his youth; nor will I ever again destroy every living being, as I have done.
