Listening Before Doing Hebrew College – Ta Shma 2021
R Yitzhak Meir of Gur, Hidushei Harim, Parashat Yitro (1799-1866)

The holy statement "I am YHVH your God", Anokhi, (Shemot 20:2) was not said as a commandment. Rather, just like the statement "let there be a firmament" (Bereshit 1:6) brought the firmament into being, so also the statement "Anokhi" brought into being  the clear unceasing connection and attachment between the Israelite soul and God's Reign and divinity.

  • Note the difference the Hidushei Harim (HH) is articulating between different kinds of speech acts.
  • Think about his proposal that a relationship with God is set into place at Sinai. What does that mean? What does that mean to you?

Regarding the existence of the universe it says: “Your word, God, stands in heaven forever"(Psalms 119:89). This means that the world constantly comes into existence and is sustained by the divine utterance. How much more so, the statement "I am YHVH your God" has never ceased. Thus it says:" a great sound that did not end"(Devarim 5:19).

  • The HH is referencing a well-known teaching of the Besht on the verse from Psalms. To summarize – The Besht taught that God’s creation of the world by speech was not a one-time occurrence in the past but rather a constant ongoing occurrence.
  • The HH says that same is true of our relationship with God. What does that mean? What are the experiential implications?

However, the pure Israelite soul is covered by the soul of impurity. This is known as the shell of the fruit, which covers and separates the holy connection. This is why the 613 mitzvot were given.  In the Zohar they are called "the Torah's advice" - they all show ways to remove the covering. These 613 pieces of advice remove the covering by shining light on the Israelite soul and revitalizing it. When you follow this advice your soul will become a seat and chariot for the blessed Holiness by virtue of its own vitality which is born of the utterance "Anokhi".

Pay close attention to the way he describes the goal of mitzvoth and the way they function. What does, or might that look like in your life?

This is why we say "Shema - Listen Israel, YHVH our God..." With the intention that every individual Israelite hear the holy utterance - "Anokhi".

So what is the practice of listening to God?
