Each woman shall borrow from her neighbor and the lodger in her house objects of silver and gold, and clothing, and you shall put these on your sons and daughters, thus stripping the Egyptians.
ויהי הענן והחשך ויאר את הלילה (שם יד כ), היה הענן במצרים ומאיר לישראל ומחשך למצרים, שנאמר ולכל בני ישראל היה אור במושבותם (שם י כג), והיו ישראל נכנסין לבתיהם של מצרים, וכל מה שהיה למצרים היו ישראל מחפשין ורואים, ובשעה שאמר הקב"ה לישראל ושאלה אשה משכנתה ומגרת ביתה וגו' (שם ג כב), היו ישראל נכנסין אצל מצרים ואומר כל אחד ואחד לחבירו לשכינו השאילני אותו הכלי שיש לך, והוא אומר אין לי, והוא אומר אני יודע שיש לך, והרי היא בתוך התיבה שלך, הרי הוא במקום פלוני, אני ראיתי אותו בידך, והיה משאילו אותו הכלי, ומהיכן היו ישראל יודעין, אלא באותן ימי החשך היו נכנסין לתך בתיהן ורואין כספם וזהבם וכליהם שהיו להם.
THUS THERE WAS THE CLOUD AND THE DARKNESS WHICH LIT UP THE NIGHT. The cloud was in Egypt; and while it gave light to Israel, it was darkened for Egypt, as stated (in Exod. 10:23): BUT ALL THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL HAD LIGHT IN THEIR DWELLINGS. Now, Israel entered the houses of the Egyptians, and whatever the Egyptians had, Israel searched out and looked at <them>. So, when the Holy One said to Israel (in Exod. 3:22): BUT EACH WOMAN SHALL BORROW < OBJECTS OF SILVER, OBJECTS OF GOLD, AND CLOTHING > FROM HER NEIGHBOR AND FROM THE WOMAN WHO SOJOURNS IN HER HOUSE…, Israel entered in among the Egyptians. Then, when each and every one would say to his companion and neighbor: Lend me that object which you have, and when he would say: I do not have it, he would say: I know that you have it, and here it is in your chest. See, it is in such and such a place. I saw it in your hand. So he lent him that object. And how did Israel know this? It is simply that in those days of darkness they had entered their houses and seen their silver, their gold, and whatever objects they had.
(א) וַיַּ֣רְא הָעָ֔ם כִּֽי־בֹשֵׁ֥שׁ מֹשֶׁ֖ה לָרֶ֣דֶת מִן־הָהָ֑ר וַיִּקָּהֵ֨ל הָעָ֜ם עַֽל־אַהֲרֹ֗ן וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ אֵלָיו֙ ק֣וּם ׀ עֲשֵׂה־לָ֣נוּ אֱלֹקִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר יֵֽלְכוּ֙ לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ כִּי־זֶ֣ה ׀ מֹשֶׁ֣ה הָאִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֤ר הֶֽעֱלָ֙נוּ֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם לֹ֥א יָדַ֖עְנוּ מֶה־הָ֥יָה לֽוֹ׃ (ב) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ אַהֲרֹ֔ן פָּֽרְקוּ֙ נִזְמֵ֣י הַזָּהָ֔ב אֲשֶׁר֙ בְּאָזְנֵ֣י נְשֵׁיכֶ֔ם בְּנֵיכֶ֖ם וּבְנֹתֵיכֶ֑ם וְהָבִ֖יאוּ אֵלָֽי׃ (ג) וַיִּתְפָּֽרְקוּ֙ כָּל־הָעָ֔ם אֶת־נִזְמֵ֥י הַזָּהָ֖ב אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּאָזְנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיָּבִ֖יאוּ אֶֽל־אַהֲרֹֽן׃ (ד) וַיִּקַּ֣ח מִיָּדָ֗ם וַיָּ֤צַר אֹתוֹ֙ בַּחֶ֔רֶט וַֽיַּעֲשֵׂ֖הוּ עֵ֣גֶל מַסֵּכָ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ אֵ֤לֶּה אֱלֹקֶ֙יךָ֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֶעֱל֖וּךָ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (ה) וַיַּ֣רְא אַהֲרֹ֔ן וַיִּ֥בֶן מִזְבֵּ֖חַ לְפָנָ֑יו וַיִּקְרָ֤א אַֽהֲרֹן֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר חַ֥ג לַיקוק מָחָֽר׃
(1) When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, the people gathered against Aaron and said to him, “Come, make us a god who shall go before us, for that man Moses, who brought us from the land of Egypt—we do not know what has happened to him.” (2) Aaron said to them, “Take off the gold rings that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” (3) And all the people took off the gold rings that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. (4) This he took from them and cast in a mold,-a and made it into a molten calf. And they exclaimed, “This is your god,-b O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!” “It is not the sound of the tune of triumph,

(1) G!d spoke to Moses, saying: (2) Tell the Israelite people to bring Me gifts; you shall accept gifts for Me from every person whose heart so moves him. (3) And these are the gifts that you shall accept from them: gold, silver, and copper; (4) blue, purple, and crimson yarns, fine linen, goats’ hair; (5) tanned ram skins, dolphin skins, and acacia wood; (6) oil for lighting, spices for the anointing oil and for the aromatic incense; (7) lapis lazuli and other stones for setting, for the ephod and for the breastpiece. (8) And let them make Me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them. (9) Exactly as I show you—the pattern of the Tabernacle and the pattern of all its furnishings—so shall you make it.
דְּלֵית נְהוֹרָא אֶלָּא הַהוּא דְּנָפִיק מִגּוֹ חֲשׁוֹכָא... וְלֵית פּוּלְחָנָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, אֶלָּא מִגּוֹ חֲשׁוֹכָא, וְלֵית טוּבָא אֶלָּא מִגּוֹ בִּישָׁא
There is no light except that which emerges from darkness... and there is no worship of the blessed Holy One except that which comes from darkness, and there is no good except that which comes from evil.
One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. The latter procedure, however, is disagreeable and therefore not popular
A genogram is a visual representation of a family system, incorporating at least three generations of the system. Its purpose is to help you and your partner see their context in visual form, so that notable patterns can be acknowledged and recorded (Kerr & Bowen, 1988).
As an individual
Step 1 - Draw a family tree including the names of you, your siblings, parents, aunts/uncles, grandparents and great grandparents.
Step 2 - For each person in your financial genogram, think about family stories you have heard or events you have witnessed. What are key stories concerning that person's relationship to earning or saving money? What about their relationship to debt, risk, work, unemployment, inheritance, or bankruptcy? Write a word or phrase by their names that will remind you of their story.
Step 3 - Look for intergenerational patterns. Are there stories that repeat generation after generation? Or are there stories that invert, one compensating for the generation before? Do you see patterns in how genders have handled money?
Step 4 - Circle the stories that feel most real/relevant in shaping how you relate to money, debt, etc.

Step 5 - Share the patterns (Step 3) and circled stories (Step 4) with your partner.
Step 6 - What inherited behaviors might you be re-enacting around money? Which ones do you want to continue and which do you want to transform? How do you think that your individual family stories play out in your relationship?
