רֶגַע שֶׁל עִבְרִית A Moment of Hebrew
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־יְהֹוָ֔ה לֹא־יוּכַ֣ל הָעָ֔ם לַעֲלֹ֖ת אֶל־הַ֣ר סִינָ֑י כִּֽי־אַתָּ֞ה הַעֵדֹ֤תָה בָּ֙נוּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַגְבֵּ֥ל אֶת־הָהָ֖ר וְקִדַּשְׁתּֽוֹ׃
But Moshe said to God, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for You warned us saying, ‘Set bounds around the mountain and sanctify it.’”
לְהַגְבִּיל l'hagbil (שֹׁרֶשׁ ג.ב.ל)--
To set a limit or a border, to restrict
גְּבוּל (gevul) = Border
מִגְבָּלָה (migbalah) = Restriction
לְהַסִּיג גְּבוּל (le-hasig gevul) = To trespass
לַעֲבֹר אֶת הַגְּבוּל (la-avor et ha-gevul) = To cross the line (usually by saying or doing something
inappropriate)
גְּבוּלִין (gevulin) = A term in the Talmud that describes space outside of the Beit Ha-Mikdash (Mishnah Shabbat 1:11)
Find the Word!
During the 10 plagues in מִצְרַיִם (Mitzrayim, Egypt) this שֹׁרֶשׁ (shoresh, root) was used a number of times to show that a plague covered the entire country. Can you find the shoresh in the plague of locusts? (Hint: look at Shemot 10:14.)
