(5) When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his courtiers had a change of heart about the people and said, “What is this we have done, releasing Israel from our service?” (6) He ordered his chariot and took his force with him; (7) he took six hundred of his picked chariots, and the rest of the chariots of Egypt, with officers in all of them. (8) יהוה stiffened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he gave chase to the Israelites. As the Israelites were departing defiantly, (9) the Egyptians gave chase to them..
As Pharaoh drew near, the Israelites caught sight of the Egyptians advancing upon them. Greatly frightened, the Israelites cried out to God ...
Then יהוה said to Moses, “Why do you cry out to Me? Tell the Israelites to go forward. (16) And you lift up your rod and hold out your arm over the sea and split it, so that the Israelites may march into the sea on dry ground... (17)
(21) Then Moses held out his arm over the sea and יהוה drove back the sea with a strong east wind all that night, and turned the sea into dry ground. The waters were split, (22) and the Israelites went into the sea on dry ground, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left.

R. Yehuda says: When the Israelites stood at the Red Sea, one said: “I do not want to go down to the sea first,” the other said, “I do not want to go down to the sea first,”… While they were standing arguing, Nachshon the son of Aminadav jumped up first and went down into the water and fell into the waves….
At the same time Moses was standing and reciting long prayers before God. Then God said to him, “Moses, my friend is sinking in the water and the sea is closing in on him; the enemy (the Egyptians) is pursuing and you stand here reciting long prayers?” Moses said to God, “What can I do?” God said to him, “lift up your rod.” Exodus 14:16

R. Eliezer said: God said to Moses: “There is a time to pray briefly and a time to pray at length. My children are in distress (standing at the Red Sea as the Egyptian army approaches)…and you stand here adding prayer onto prayer!
‘Speak to the children of Israel that they move forward.’
Let their feet step forward from the dry land to the sea, and you will see miracles that I will perform for them.
What is God's critique of Moses?
Exodus Rabbah 21:10
‘The children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon dry land” How is it possible” If they went into the sea, then why does it say ‘upon dry land?’ If they walked on dry land why does it say ‘into the midst of the sea?’ This is to teach that the sea was divided only after Israel has stepped into it and the waters had reached their noses, only then did it become dry land.
How is this midrash similar to the midrash in the Mekhilta about Nachshon?

Exodus Rabbah 21:10
Rabbi Nehorai said: The daughters of Israel walked through the sea holding their children by the hand and when the children cried the mothers would stretch out their hands and pluck an apple or a pomegranate from the sea and give it to them. Psalm 106:9 “God led the Israelites through the depths of the sea as a wilderness.” Just as they lacked nothing in the wilderness, so too in the depths of the sea they lacked nothing.
(ג) וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם אַבְרָהָ֜ם בַּבֹּ֗קֶר וַֽיַּחֲבֹשׁ֙ אֶת־חֲמֹר֔וֹ וַיִּקַּ֞ח אֶת־שְׁנֵ֤י נְעָרָיו֙ אִתּ֔וֹ וְאֵ֖ת יִצְחָ֣ק בְּנ֑וֹ וַיְבַקַּע֙ עֲצֵ֣י עֹלָ֔ה וַיָּ֣קָם וַיֵּ֔לֶךְ אֶל־הַמָּק֖וֹם אֲשֶׁר־אָֽמַר־ל֥וֹ הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃
(3) And Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he cleaved the wood for the burnt-offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
ר' בנאה אומר בזכות מצוה שעשה אביהם אברהם אני אקרע להם את הים שנ' ויבקע עצי עולה (בראשית כב) וכתיב ויבקעו המים.שמעון איש קטרון אומר בזכות עצמות של יוסף אני קורע להם את הים שנ' ויעזוב בגדו אצלה וינס החוצה (בראשית לט) וכתיב הים ראה וינס (תהלים קיד ג).
R. Bana'ah says: In the merit of the mitzvoth performed by Abraham I will split the sea for them, viz. (Genesis 22:3) "and he split the wood for the burnt-offering" — and here (Exodus 14:21) "and the waters were split"
Shimon of Kitron says: In the merit of the bones of Joseph I will split the sea for them, viz. (Genesis 39:12) "And he left his garment in her hand and he fled." And it is written (Psalms 114:3) "The sea saw and it fled, etc."
Meam Loez counts 50 main miracles that happened to Bnei Yisroel from when they left Mitzrayim until after Krias Yam Suf.
6. All the waters of the world, including underground and in the heavens, split as well (into 12 parts see below).
7. The Yam Suf split into 12 thoroughfares for the 12 shevatim. The water did not split completely right away, only as they walked it kept opening further. This was to teach them Bitachon (faith).
8. The water covered them on all sides including above their heads forming a tent.
9. The floor of the Yam Suf dried completely like there was never any water there.
10. The floor became a beautiful mosaic.
11. The water formed crystals so that the shevatim (12 tribes) were able to see each other.
12. There were fruit trees for the mother's to feed the crying hungry children. It smelled of sweet fragrances and not sea water.

17. Even the old and infirm were able to move across swiftly without holding everyone back, despite that it was nighttime and they were all terrified of the Mitzrim who were in hot pursuit.
18. The walls of water stood so high all the nations of the world were able to see them.

32. There are different opinions about the logistics but according to one opinion, after the last Mitzri entered the Yam, all of Bnei Yisroel were still inside. For Bnei Yisroel it remained split while the Yam on the Mitzri side returned to its normal flow.
43. Although Pharaoh led the way and took the brunt of the crashing sea walls, he was the lone survivor, in order to tell the world the greatness of Hashem.

(1) When Israel went forth from Egypt,the house of Jacob from a people of strange speech, (2) Judah became His aOr “sanctuary.”holy one,-aIsrael, His dominion. (3) The sea saw them and fled,Jordan ran backward, (4) mountains skipped like rams,hills like sheep. (5) What alarmed you, O sea, that you fled,Jordan, that you ran backward, (6) mountains, that you skipped like rams,hills, like sheep? (7) Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,at the presence of the God of Jacob, (8) who turned the rock into a pool of water,the flinty rock into a fountain.
(ט) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֗ים יִקָּו֨וּ הַמַּ֜יִם מִתַּ֤חַת הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ אֶל־מָק֣וֹם אֶחָ֔ד וְתֵרָאֶ֖ה הַיַּבָּשָׁ֑ה וַֽיְהִי־כֵֽן׃
And God said: 'Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear.' And it was so.
The splitting of the waters culminated in God creating living beings, allowing life to flourish on Earth. On the shores of the Red Sea, the creation process culminated with the creation of the nation, of B’nei Yisrael. Here too, the verse describes chaos and darkness with God’s presence hovering above. The waters are split, and dry land is revealed.
The Midrash Shemoth Rabbah (21:6) connects the creation story of the world with the creation at the Red Sea, explaining that the splitting of the sea was a stipulation of the original creation story. The verse in Shemoth 14:27 reads:
וַיְהִ֤י הֶֽעָנָן֙ וְהַחֹ֔שֶׁךְ וַיָּ֖אֶר אֶת־הַלָּ֑יְלָה וְלֹא־קָרַ֥ב זֶ֛ה אֶל־זֶ֖ה כׇּל־הַלָּֽיְלָה׃ (כא) וַיֵּ֨ט מֹשֶׁ֣ה אֶת־יָדוֹ֮ עַל־הַיָּם֒ וַיּ֣וֹלֶךְ יקוק ׀ אֶת־הַ֠יָּ֠ם בְּר֨וּחַ קָדִ֤ים עַזָּה֙ כׇּל־הַלַּ֔יְלָה וַיָּ֥שֶׂם אֶת־הַיָּ֖ם לֶחָרָבָ֑ה וַיִּבָּקְע֖וּ הַמָּֽיִם׃
Thus there was the cloud with the darkness, and it cast a spell upon the night, so that the one could not come near the other all through the night. Then Moses held out his arm over the sea and the Lord drove back the sea with a strong east wind all that night, and turned the sea into dry ground. And the waters were split.
(כז) וַיֵּט֩ מֹשֶׁ֨ה אֶת־יָד֜וֹ עַל־הַיָּ֗ם וַיָּ֨שׇׁב הַיָּ֜ם לִפְנ֥וֹת בֹּ֙קֶר֙ לְאֵ֣יתָנ֔וֹ וּמִצְרַ֖יִם נָסִ֣ים לִקְרָאת֑וֹ
(27) Moses held out his arm over the sea, and at daybreak the sea returned to its normal state, and the Egyptians fled at its approach.

God reenacts the creation in the Exodus story with the Jewish people as the central characters. From this point on, the Jews are called Ivrim (a unified people), a nation to which God has given birth.
There is one distinct difference between the creation in Bereshit and the re-creation at yam suf (Red Sea). It can be argued that there was something lacking in the creation story in Bereishit. Shortly after the world is created, God destroys almost all living creatures in the flood and begins the creative process again with Noah and his family. The creation at the sea, however, is a creation that endured, a final act of Divine creation. What was different about the creation of B’nei Yisrael?
The creation of the world is marked by the words “vayomer elokim” (God said). God said ‘let there be light.’ God said ‘let the waters separate’ etc. However, in the Exodus story, at the moment the Jewish people reached the other side, there was no prose, there was no sacrifice. There was song.
(א) אָ֣ז יָשִֽׁיר־מֹשֶׁה֩ וּבְנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אֶת־הַשִּׁירָ֤ה הַזֹּאת֙ לַֽיקוק [...] אָשִׁ֤ירָה לַֽיקוק כִּֽי־גָאֹ֣ה גָּאָ֔ה
Then Moses and the children of Israel chose to sing this song to God…I shall sing to God for God is exalted…
