The shoresh שמע appears 89 times in all of the Book of Devarim (34 chapters), in Ekev alone (4 chapters) it appears 9 times. The most famous of those appearances is the the "vehaya im shamoa" paragraph, which is the second paragraph of the Shema.

(10) I had stayed on the mountain, as I did the first time, forty days and forty nights; and ה' heeded me once again: ה' agreed not to destroy you. (11) And ה' said to me, “Up, resume the march at the head of the people, that they may go in and possess the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.” (12) And now, O Israel, what does your God ה' demand of you? Only this: to revere your God ה', to walk only in divine paths, to love and to serve your God ה' with all your heart and soul, (13) keeping יהוה’s commandments and laws, which I enjoin upon you today, for your good. (14) Mark, the heavens to their uttermost reaches belong to your God ה', the earth and all that is on it! (15) Yet it was to your ancestors that ה' was drawn out of love for them, so that you, their seed, were chosen from among all peoples—as is now the case. (16) Cut away, therefore, the thickening about your hearts and stiffen your necks no more. (17) For your God ה' is God supreme and Lord supreme, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who shows no favor and takes no bribe, (18) but upholds the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and befriends the stranger, providing food and clothing.— (19) You too must befriend the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. (20) You must revere ה': only your God shall you worship, to [God] shall you hold fast, and by God’s name shall you swear. (21) [ ה' ] is your glory and your God, who wrought for you those marvelous, awesome deeds that you saw with your own eyes. (22) Your ancestors went down to Egypt seventy persons; and now your God ה' has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven.

(10) Hear the word of the LORD,
You chieftains of Sodom;
Give ear to our God’s instruction,
You folk of Gomorrah! (11) “What need have I of all your sacrifices?”
Says the LORD.
“I am sated with burnt offerings of rams,
And suet of fatlings,
And blood of bulls;
And I have no delight
In lambs and he-goats. (12) That you come to see My face —
Who asked that of you?
Trample My courts (13) no more;
Bringing oblations is futile,
Incense is offensive to Me.
New moon and sabbath,
Proclaiming of solemnities!
Assemblies with iniquity,
I cannot abide. (14) Your new moons and fixed seasons
Fill Me with loathing;
They are become a burden to Me,
I cannot endure them. (15) And when you lift up your hands,
I will turn My eyes away from you;
Though you pray at length,
I will not listen.
Your hands are filled with blood— (16) Wash yourselves; gain merit:
Put your evil doings
Away from My sight.
Cease to do evil; (17) Learn to do good.
Devote yourselves to justice;
Aid the wronged.
Uphold the rights of the orphan;
Defend the cause of the widow.
(18) “Come, let us reach an understanding,—says the LORD.
Be your sins like crimson,
They can turn snow-white;
Be they red as dyed wool,
They can become like fleece.” (19) If, then, you agree and listen,
You will eat the good things of the earth; (20) But if you refuse and disobey,
You will be devoured [by] the sword.—
For it was the LORD who spoke.

(1) Cry with full throat, without restraint;
Raise your voice like a ram’s horn!
Declare to My people their transgression,
To the House of Jacob their sin. (2) To be sure, they seek Me daily,
Eager to learn My ways.
Like a nation that does what is right,
That has not abandoned the laws of its God,
They ask Me for the right way,
They are eager for the nearness of God: (3) “Why, when we fasted, did You not see?
When we starved our bodies, did You pay no heed?”
Because on your fast day
You see to your business
And oppress all your laborers! (4) Because you fast in strife and contention,
And you strike with a wicked fist!
Your fasting today is not such
As to make your voice heard on high. (5) Is such the fast I desire,
A day for men to starve their bodies?
Is it bowing the head like a bulrush
And lying in sackcloth and ashes?
Do you call that a fast,
A day when the LORD is favorable? (6) No, this is the fast I desire:
To unlock fetters of wickedness,
And untie the cords of the yoke-a
To let the oppressed go free;
To break off every yoke. (7) It is to share your bread with the hungry,
And to take the wretched poor into your home;
When you see the naked, to clothe him,
And not to ignore your own kin.
(8) Then shall your light burst through like the dawn
And your healing spring up quickly;
Your Vindicator shall march before you,
The Presence of the LORD shall be your rear guard. (9) Then, when you call, the LORD will answer;
When you cry, He will say: Here I am.
If you banish the yoke from your midst,
The menacing hand,-b and evil speech, (10) And you offer your compassion to the hungry
And satisfy the famished creature—
Then shall your light shine in darkness,
And your gloom shall be like noonday.

(1) The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD: (2) Stand at the gate of the House of the LORD, and there proclaim this word: Hear the word of the LORD, all you of Judah who enter these gates to worship the LORD! (3) Thus said the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: Mend your ways and your actions, and I will let you dwell-a in this place. (4) Don’t put your trust in illusions and say, “The Temple of the LORD, the Temple of the LORD, the Temple of the LORD are these [buildings].” (5) No, if you really mend your ways and your actions; if you execute justice between one man and another; (6) if you do not oppress the stranger, the orphan, and the widow; if you do not shed the blood of the innocent in this place; if you do not follow other gods, to your own hurt— (7) then only will I let you dwell-a in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers for all time. (8) See, you are relying on illusions that are of no avail. (9) Will you steal and murder and commit adultery and swear falsely, and sacrifice to Baal, and follow other gods whom you have not experienced, (10) and then come and stand before Me in this House which bears My name and say, “We are safe”?—[Safe] to do all these abhorrent things! (11) Do you consider this House, which bears My name, to be a den of thieves? As for Me, I have been watching—declares the LORD.

(1) A psalm of Asaph.
God, the LORD God-a spoke
and summoned the world from east to west. (2) From Zion, perfect in beauty,
God appeared (3) —let our God come and not fail to act!
Devouring fire preceded Him;
it stormed around Him fiercely. (4) He summoned the heavens above,
and the earth, for the trial of His people. (5) “Bring in My devotees,
who made a covenant with Me over sacrifice!” (6) Then the heavens proclaimed His righteousness,
for He is a God who judges. Selah.
(7) “Hear, My people, and I will speak,
O Israel, and I will arraign you.
I am God, your God. (8) I censure you not for your sacrifices,
and your burnt offerings, made to Me daily; (9) I claim no bull from your estate,
no he-goats from your pens. (10) For Mine is every animal of the forest,
the beasts on a thousand mountains.-b (11) I know every bird of the mountains,
the creatures of the field are subject to Me. (12) Were I hungry, I would not tell you,
for Mine is the world and all it holds. (13) Do I eat the flesh of bulls,
or drink the blood of he-goats? (14) Sacrifice a thank offering to God,
and pay your vows to the Most High. (15) Call upon Me in time of trouble;
I will rescue you, and you shall honor Me.”
(16) And to the wicked, God said:
“Who are you to recite My laws,
and mouth the terms of My covenant, (17) seeing that you spurn My discipline,
and brush My words aside? (18) When you see a thief, you fall in with him,
and throw in your lot with adulterers; (19) you devote your mouth to evil,
and yoke your tongue to deceit; (20) you are busy maligning your brother,
defaming the son of your mother. (21) If I failed to act when you did these things,
you would fancy that I was like you;
so I censure you and confront you with charges. (22) Mark this, you who are unmindful of God,
lest I tear you apart and no one save you.
(23) One who sacrifices a thank offering honors Me,
but to one who improves their way-b
I will show the salvation of God.”
~ The book of Psalms preceeds both prophets. What are the themes in this particular psalm? How are they expanded by the two prophets?
(13) My Lord said:
Because that people has approached [Me] with its mouth
And honored Me with its lips,
But has kept its heart far from Me,
And its worship of Me has been
A commandment of men, learned by rote— (14) Truly, I shall further baffle that people
With bafflement upon bafflement;
And the wisdom of its wise shall fail,
And the prudence of its prudent shall vanish.
(15) Ha! Those who would hide their plans
Deep from the LORD!
Who do their work in dark places
And say, “Who sees us, who takes note of us?” (16) How perverse of you!
Should the potter be accounted
Like the jugs or like the clay?
Should what is made say of its Maker,
“He did not make me,”
And what is formed say of Him who formed it,
“He did not understand”?
~ What is another problem for Isaiah/God regarding doing things by rote?

The mitzvah of the viduy is on Yom HaKippurim with nightfall, but the sages said that a person does viduy [confesses] before they eat and drink lest they become distraught during eating and drinking. And even though one did viduy before eating and drinking, one [also] needs to do viduy after eating and drinking lest they did something disgraceful during the meal. And even though one did viduy after eating and drinking, one [also] needs to do viduy during the night service. And even though one did viduy during the night service, one [also] needs to do viduy during the morning service. And even though one did viduy during the morning service, one [also] needs to do viduy during the musaf service. And even though one did viduy during the musaf service, one [also] needs to do viduy during the afternoon service. And even though one did viduy during the afternoon service, one [also] needs to do viduy during the ne'ila service lest they did something disgraceful during the day [at any point].

(63) Our God and God of our fathers, let our prayer come before you and do not ignore our supplication. For we are not so brazen-faced and stiff-necked to say to you, Adonoy, our God, and God of our fathers, “We are righteous and have not sinned.” But, indeed, we and our fathers have sinned.
(64) We have trespassed [against God and man, and we are devastated by our guilt]; We have betrayed [God and man, we have been ungrateful for the good done to us]; We have stolen; We have slandered. We have caused others to sin; We have caused others to commit sins for which they are called רְשָׁעִים, wicked; We have sinned with malicious intent; We have forcibly taken others' possessions even though we paid for them; We have added falsehood upon falsehood; We have joined with evil individuals or groups; We have given harmful advice; We have deceived; we have mocked; We have rebelled against God and His Torah; We have caused God to be angry with us; We have turned away from God's Torah; We have sinned deliberately; We have been negligent in our performance of the commandments; We have caused our friends grief; We have been stiff-necked, refusing to admit that our suffering is caused by our own sins. We have committed sins for which we are called רָשָׁע, [raising a hand to hit someone]. We have committed sins which are the result of moral corruption; We have committed sins which the Torah refers to as abominations; We have gone astray; We have led others astray.
(65) We have turned away from Your commandments and from Your good laws, and we have gained nothing from it. And You are the Righteous One in all [punishment] that has come upon us; for You have acted truthfully and we have acted wickedly.
(66) What shall we say before You, Who dwells on high; and what shall we relate to You Who dwells in the heavens? For everything, both hidden and revealed, You know.
(67) You know the mysteries of the universe, and the hidden secrets of every individual. You search all our innermost thoughts, and probe our mind and heart. There is nothing hidden from You, and there is nothing concealed from Your sight.
(68) And so may it be Your will Adonoy our God and God of our fathers, that You pardon us for all our careless sins, and that You forgive us for all our deliberate sins, and that You grant us atonement for all our rebellious sins:
(69) For the sin we committed before You under compulsion and willingly.
(70) And for the sin we committed before You by callously hardening the heart.
(71) For the sin we committed before You inadvertently.
(72) And for the sin we committed before You with an utterance of the lips.
(73) For the sin we committed before You openly and secretly.
(74) And for the sin we committed before You in sexual immorality.
(75) For the sin we committed before You through [misuse of our power of] speech.
(76) And for the sin we committed before You with knowledge and with deceit.
(77) For the sin we committed before You by improper thoughts.
(78) And for the sin we committed before You by cheating a fellow-man.
(79) For the sin we committed before You with [mere] verbal confession.
(80) And for the sin we committed before You by joining in a lewd gathering.
(81) For the sin we committed before You intentionally and unintentionally.
(82) And for the sin we committed before You by insufficient respect for parents and teachers.
(83) For the sin we committed before You by using coercion [to harm others].
(84) And for the sin we committed before You by desecrating the Divine Name.
(85) For the sin we committed before You with foolish talk.
(86) And for the sin we committed before You with impurity of the lips.
(87) For the sin we committed before You with the Evil Inclination.
(88) And for the sin we committed before You knowingly and unknowingly.
(89) And for all of these, God of pardon, pardon us, forgive us, grant us atonement.
(90) For the sin we committed before You by forcing someone to give or take bribes.
(91) And for the sin we committed before You by false denial and false promise.
(92) For the sin we committed before You by evil talk [slander].
(93) And for the sin we committed before You by scoffing.
(94) For the sin we committed before You in business dealings.
(95) And for the sin we committed before You in eating and drinking.
(96) For the sin we committed before You by [taking or giving] interest and by usury.
(97) And for the sin we committed before You by haughtily stretching forth the neck.
(98) For the sin we committed before You with gazing of the eyes.
(99) And for the sin we committed before You by the prattle of our lips.
(100) For the sin we committed before You with haughty eyes.
(101) And for the sin we committed before You with impudence.
(102) And for all of these, God of pardon, pardon us, forgive us, grant us atonement.
(103) For the sin we committed before You by throwing off the yoke [of heaven].
(104) And for the sin we committed before You in passing judgment.
(105) For the sin we committed before You by entrapping a fellowman.
(106) And for the sin we committed before You by a begrudging eye.
(107) For the sin we committed before You by lightmindedness.
(108) And for the sin we committed before You by being stiff-necked [stubborn].
(109) For the sin we committed before You by running to do evil.
(110) And for the sin we committed before You by talebearing.
(111) For the sin we committed before You by swearing in vain.
(112) And for the sin we committed before You by unwarranted hatred.
(113) For the sin we committed before You by breach of trust.
(114) And for the sin we committed before You by a confused heart.
(115) And for all of these, God of pardon, pardon us, forgive us, grant us atonement.

(3) One who confesses by speech but has not one's heart's consent to abandon one's erstwhile conduct, behold, that person is like one taking an immersion of purification and in their grasp is an impure creeping thing, when they know the immersion to be of no value till they cast away the impure creeping thing. Even so it is advised to do, saying: "But whoso confesses and forsakes them shall shall obtain mercy" (Pro. 28. 13). In confessing to God, it is obligatory to name the sin, even as it is said: "Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them a god of gold" (Ex. 32.31).

(9) Neither repentance nor the Day of Atonement atone for anything save for sins committed between a person and God, for instance, one who ate forbidden food, or had forbidden coition and the like; but sins between a person and another, for instance, one injures their neighbor, or curses their neighbor or plunders them, or offends them in like matters, is ever not absolved unless one makes restitution of what one owes and begs the forgiveness of their neighbor. And, although one make restitution of the monetory debt, one is obliged to pacify their neighbor and to beg for their forgiveness. Even if one offended his neighbor in nothing but in words, one is obliged to appease the neighbor and implore them till one be forgiven by them. If the neighbor refuses, one should bring a committee of three friends to implore and beg of the neighbor; if the neighbor still refuses one should bring a second, even a third committee, but if [after this] the neighbor remains obstinate, one may leave the neighbor to themselves and move on, for the sin then rests upon the one who refuses to forgive. But if it happened to be one's teacher, one should go and come to the teacher for forgiveness even a thousand times till the teacher does forgive.

(1) All commandments of the Torah, whether they be mandatory or prohibitive, if a person violates any one of them, either presumptuously or erroneously, when they repent and turn away from their sinful way, they are obliged to confess before God, Blessed! This is as it is said: "When a man or woman shall commit any sin..… Then they shall confess their sin which they have done (Num. 5.6–7), which is a confession of words. Such confession is a mandatory commandment. How is the verbal confession made? The sinner says thus: "I beseech You, O Great Name! I have sinned; I have been obstinate; I have committed profanity against You, particularly in doing thus and such. Now, behold! I have repented and am ashamed of my actions; forever will I not relapse into this thing again." This is the elementary form of confession; but whosoever elaborates in confessing and extends this subject is, indeed, praise-worthy. ...
