As the culmination of our learning this year, each of you will create a source sheet on Sefaria for one of the values we have been studying: Savlanut (patience), Ometz Lev (courage), Kavanah (intentionality), Sakranut (curiosity), and Tikkun Olam (repairing the world). We will be sharing your source sheets with our community at our siyyum in June.
1) Start a source sheet:
- From your account page, click on “Create a Source Sheet”.
- Change the name of your new source sheet.
2) Add materials to your sheet:
You can add sources from the Sefaria library, sources from outside of the library, comments, and media such as YouTube videos, images or audio.
For instructions for creating a sheet, click here.
3) Instructions:
- Pick one of our five values.
- Start a new source sheet, and give it a title (you can edit it later, but please include the value in the title).
- Add the text from Pirkei Avot about your value to your sheet. You can do this by clicking on the text to open the "Resources" panel and then choosing "Add to Sheet" under Tools.
- What other sources can you think of that relate to the value?
- Is there another Jewish text that is related to the value? Find the text in Sefaria's library and add it to the sheet using the "Source" option.
- Is there another text - a poem, a book, a quote - that is related to the value? Copy and paste the text using the "Text" option on the sheet.
- Is there a song or picture that is related to the value? Add the URL or upload a picture using the "Media" box.
- What do you think about the value? Add your comments in the "Comment" box.
- Continue adding sources, media, texts and comments until you are happy with your source sheet.
- Look back over the sheet and edit.
- Copy and paste the URL of your sheet in a comment box below.
Choose one of these quotes from Pirkei Avot to get started!
Savlanut/Patience
There were ten generations from Noah to Abraham, to demonstrate the extent of [God's] patience, for each one of those generations provoked [God] continually, until Abraham, our father, came and received the reward of them all.
Ometz Lev/Courage
(1) Ben Zoma said: ...Who is brave? The one who overcomes their impulse.
Kavanah/Intentionality
(5) Rabbi Yishmael his son says: One who studies Torah in order to teach will be given the opportunity both to study and to teach. One who studies in order to practice will be given the opportunity to study, to teach, to observe, and to practice.
Sakranut/Curiosity
(1) Ben Zoma said: Who is wise? The one who learns from every person.
Tikkun Olam/Repairing the World
(16) He [Rabbi Tarfon] used to say: It is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to neglect it.
