אָמַר רַבִּי אָבִין הַלֵּוִי בְּרַבִּי, מִמַּכַּת דָּם הֶעֱשִׁירוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל, כֵּיצַד, הַמִּצְרִי וְיִשְׂרָאֵל בְּבַיִת אֶחָד וְהַגִּיגִית מְלֵאָה מַיִם, וּמִצְרִי הָלַךְ לְמַלְאוֹת הַקִּיתוֹן מִתּוֹכָהּ מוֹצִיאָהּ מְלֵאָה דָּם, וְיִשְׂרָאֵל שׁוֹתֶה מַיִם מִתּוֹךְ הַגִּיגִית, וְהַמִּצְרִי אוֹמֵר תֵּן לִי בְּיָדְךָ מְעַט מַיִם וְנוֹתֵן לוֹ וְנַעֲשׂוּ דָּם, וְאוֹמֵר לוֹ נִשְׁתֶּה אֲנִי וְאַתָּה מִן קְעָרָה אַחַת, וְיִשְׂרָאֵל שׁוֹתֶה מַיִם וְהַמִּצְרִי דָּם, וּכְשֶׁהָיָה לוֹקֵחַ מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל בְּדָמִים, הָיָה שׁוֹתֶה מַיִם, מִכָּאן הֶעֱשִׁירוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל.
...Rabbi Aveen, the Levite, son of Rabbi, said: "From the plague of blood, the Israelites got rich. How? An Israelite and and Egyptian living in one house and a barrel was full of water; the Egyptian would go to fill the jug from it and it would be filled with blood. The Israelite would drink water from the barrel, and the Egyptian would say, 'Give me a little water in your hand' and he would give him, but it turned into blood. And he would say, 'You and I both drink from the same platter!' The Israelite would drink water and the Egyptian blood, but when he would purchase it from an Israelite with money, he would be drinking water. From here, the Israelites became rich."
עֲשָׂרָה נִסִּים נַעֲשׂוּ לַאֲבוֹתֵינוּ בְמִצְרַיִם וַעֲשָׂרָה עַל הַיָּם. עֶשֶׂר מַכּוֹת הֵבִיא הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא עַל הַמִּצְרִיִּים בְּמִצְרַיִם וְעֶשֶׂר עַל הַיָּם.
Ten miracles were wrought for our ancestors in Egypt, and ten at the sea. Ten plagues did the Holy one, blessed be He, bring upon the Egyptians in Egypt and ten at the sea.
(א) אבל הי' נסים שנעשו לאבותינו במצרים הוא הנצלם מן הי' מכות והיות כל מכה ומכה מיוחדת במצרים ולא בישראל ואלו הם נסים בלא ספק ולשון התורה בכל מכה ומכה מהם שהביא הקב"ה על המצריים מלבד מכת הכנים שלא באר זה אלא שהוא ידוע שלא ענש ישראל, אבל היו נמצאים אצלם ולא היו מצערים אותם. וכן בארו החכמים. אבל בשאר המכות התבאר בהם הענין אמר בדם "ולא יכלו מצרים לשתות מים מן היאור" ראיה שהנזק היה משיג אותם לבדם. ואמר בצפרדעי' "ובאו בביתך ובחדר משכבך"
(1) But the ten miracles that were performed for our ancestors in Egypt are their salvation from the ten plagues and that each of the ten plagues were specifically on the Egyptians and not on Israel. And these are miracles without a doubt. And the language of the Torah in each and every plague is that the Holy One, blessed be He, brought it [only] on the Egyptians. Except for the plague of lice - as [there] it did not make this clear, but it is known that He did not punish Israel. Rather [the lice] were found with [the Israelites as well], but they did not distress them. And so did the sages elucidate. But with the other plagues, the matter was clarified [in the text]. It stated about the blood (Exodus 7:21), "and the Egyptians could not drink water from the river" - a proof that that the damage reached them alone. And it stated with the frogs (Exodus 7:28), "and they will come into your house and into your bedrooms, etc."
(כא) וְהַדָּגָ֨ה אֲשֶׁר־בַּיְאֹ֥ר מֵ֙תָה֙ וַיִּבְאַ֣שׁ הַיְאֹ֔ר וְלֹא־יָכְל֣וּ מִצְרַ֔יִם לִשְׁתּ֥וֹת מַ֖יִם מִן־הַיְאֹ֑ר וַיְהִ֥י הַדָּ֖ם בְּכׇל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃
(כח) וְשָׁרַ֣ץ הַיְאֹר֮ צְפַרְדְּעִים֒ וְעָלוּ֙ וּבָ֣אוּ בְּבֵיתֶ֔ךָ וּבַחֲדַ֥ר מִשְׁכָּבְךָ֖ וְעַל־מִטָּתֶ֑ךָ וּבְבֵ֤ית עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ וּבְעַמֶּ֔ךָ וּבְתַנּוּרֶ֖יךָ וּבְמִשְׁאֲרוֹתֶֽיךָ׃
(28) The Nile shall swarm with frogs, and they shall come up and enter your palace, your bedchamber and your bed, the houses of your courtiers and your people, and your ovens and your kneading bowls.
ויחפרו. רבים אומרים כי המים היו ביד המצרי אדומים כדם ונתלבנו ביד הישראלי. אם כן למה לא נכתב אות זה בתורה. ולפי דעתי כי מכת הדם והצפרדעים והכנים היתה כוללת המצרים והעבריים. כי אחר הכתוב נרדוף. ואלה השלש מעט הזיקו. רק מכת הערוב שהיתה קשה. השם הפריש בין המצריים ובין ישראל וככה מכת הדבר והברד בעבור מקניהם. ולא כן בשחין. ולא בארבה כי הם יוצאים ממצרים וכאשר חפרו המצרים כן חפרו העבריים:
DIGGED. Many say that the water was as red as blood in the hands of an Egyptian and became clear in the hands of an Israelite. If this is so then why doesn’t the Torah record this sign? I believe that the plagues of blood, frogs, and gnats included both Egyptians and Hebrews, for we shall follow Scripture. These three plagues caused little harm. However, God differentiated between the Egyptians and the Israelites with regard to the swarms, which was a very harmful plague. So too with regard to the plagues of murrain and hail because of their flocks. This was not the case with the boils and locusts, for they left Egypt. Now as the Egyptians digged, so did the Hebrews dig.
ומה שכתב הראב"ע כי מכת הדם והצפרדעים והכנים היה למצרים ולישראל אסור להאמין דבר זה כ"ש שהכתובים מורים הפך...ולא ידעתי אם המכה היתה גם לישראל מה ראיה יש בה לפרעה שישלח את ישראל מארצו! ולא היה ראוי להטריח הקולמוס בכיוצא בזה אלא שלא ליתן פתחון פה לדוברים עתק על דרז"ל:
ולפי דעתי כי מכת הדם. ואנו אין לנו אלא דברי רבותינו ז"ל כי ממכת דם נתעשרו ישראל. ואפילו נכרי וישראל שותין בספל אחת היה חציו דם וחציו מים. ולפי דעתי תלמיד טועה ועני בדעת כתב הדברים האלה. וכבר גליתי לך בריש בראשית שתלמידים טועים פקו פליליה:
