(טז) הוּא הָיָה אוֹמֵר, לֹא עָלֶיךָ הַמְּלָאכָה לִגְמֹר, וְלֹא אַתָּה בֶן חוֹרִין לִבָּטֵל מִמֶּנָּה. אִם לָמַדְתָּ תוֹרָה הַרְבֵּה, נוֹתְנִים לְךָ שָׂכָר הַרְבֵּה. וְנֶאֱמָן הוּא בַעַל מְלַאכְתְּךָ שֶׁיְּשַׁלֵּם לְךָ שְׂכַר פְּעֻלָּתֶךָ. וְדַע מַתַּן שְׂכָרָן שֶׁל צַדִּיקִים לֶעָתִיד לָבֹא:
(16) He [Rabbi Tarfon] used to say: It is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to neglect it; If you have studied much Torah, you shall be given much reward. Faithful is your employer to pay you the reward of your labor; And know that the grant of reward unto the righteous is in the age to come.
(ה) או יבואר, והיה עקב תשמעון את המשפטים האלה ושמרתם ועשיתם אותם. כלומר תיכף כשתשמע המצות בכל לב ותכוין עצמך לשמוע מצות הבורא יתברך זה יהיה השכר שלך מחמת שתשמע מצות הבורא יתברך כתרגומו חלף דתקבלין. ושמרתם ועשיתם אותם, תזכה בודאי לעשות אותם. או יבואר, כי לעתיד לבוא יחזור הקדוש ברוך הוא כל התורה לישראל כמבואר תורה חדשה מאתי תצא. וזהו והיה עקב תשמעון, כי עקב הוא לשון סוף. תשמעון, כלומר לעתיד לבוא תשמעו התורה מפי הקדוש ברוך הוא. או יבואר והיה עקב תשמעון, כי עיקר העבודה של האדם שיהיה לו יראת ה' ואחר היראה מגיע לאדם שמחה וזו השמחה נקראת השראת השכינה ואז שומע תורה קדושה מלמעלה. וזה הרמז והיה, הוא שמחה. עקב, לשון סוף שהשמחה יהיה אחר היראה. ואז תשמעון כנ"ל:
(5) Another approach [...] emphasizes the immediacy with which the people will respond to the commandments and the enthusiasm with which they will perform them. Moses reveals to the people that G’d does not only respond to the fact that the people keep the commandments, but He takes note of how the people relate to the commandments, whether they perform them grudgingly and they drag their feet before performing them, or if they seek out opportunities to fulfill these commandments and having found such opportunities, with how much enthusiasm they will go about performing them. G’d will reward the people for their enthusiastic attitude to the commandments. This is what Onkelos may have had in mind when he said: “you will receive the reward as an immediate exchange for performing the commandments.” Not only this; your attitude to My commandments will determine that you will find opportunities to fulfill these commandments.
(א) אַף־עַל־פִּי שֶׁהָאָדָם צָרִיךְ לִהְיוֹת זָרִיז גָּדוֹל מְאֹד מְאֹד בַּעֲבוֹדַת ה', לְהִזְדָּרֵז מְאֹד בְּכָל עֵת וּבְכָל שָׁעָה לַעֲשׂוֹת הַרְבֵּה בַּעֲבוֹדַת ה', כִּי עִקָּר הוּא הָעֲשִׂיָּה, לִלְמֹד הַרְבֵּה וְלַעֲשׂוֹת מִצְווֹת הַרְבֵּה וּלְהִתְפַּלֵּל וּלְהִתְחַנֵּן הַרְבֵּה לִשְׁפֹּךְ לִבּוֹ לְפָנָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ, וְכַיּוֹצֵא בָּזֶה שְׁאָר עִנְיְנֵי עֲבוֹדַת ה'.
(1) You must have great enthusiasm in serving God. Be eager to do as much as possible every hour and every day. Deeds are the main thing. Study much, keep many mitzvot, spend much time praying and pouring out your heart before God. You must do as much as possible in every way.
(כב) ואולם האדם אשר אין החמדה הזאת לוהטת בו כראוי, עצה טובה היא לו שיזדרז ברצונו, כדי שימשך מזה שתולד בו החמדה בטבע, כי התנועה החיצונה מעוררת הפנימית, ובודאי שיותר מסורה בידו היא החיצונה מהפנימית. אך אם ישתמש ממה שבידו, יקנה גם מה שאינו בידו בהמשך, כי תולד בו השמחה הפנימית והחפץ והחמדה מכח מה שהוא מתלהט בתנועתו ברצון. והוא מה שהיה הנביא אומר (הושע ו): ונדעה נרדפה לדעת את ה', וכתוב (שם יא): אחרי ה' ילכו כאריה ישאג.
(22) But for a man in whom this longing does not burn as it should, a good advice for him is to act with zeal by force of will in order that this will bring an inner awakening of this longing in his inner nature. For the external movement rouses the inner ones and certainly the external movement is more in his power than the inner ones. Thus, if he exercises what is in his power to do, this will lead him to also attain what is not in his power. For an inner joy will awaken within him and a desire and longing through the power of acting fiery, externally, by the force of will. This is what the prophet said- "let us know, let us run to know the L-rd" (Hoshea 6:3) and "After G-d they will go, who shall roar like a lion"(Hoshea 11:10).
