Ahavat Olam - The Blessing of Revelation in the Evening Service
What does it mean?
[With] An everlasting love You loved the House of Israel, Your people. You taught us Torah and commandments, statutes and laws.
(2) Thus said ADONAI: The people escaped from the sword, found favor in the wilderness; when Israel was marching homeward (3) ADONAI revealed Himself to me of old. Eternal love I conceived for you then; therefore I continue My grace to you.
(10) When a dispute comes before you from your brothers living in their towns, whether about homicide, or about Torah or rituals, or laws or rules, you must instruct them so that they do not incur guilt before the LORD and wrath be upon you and your brothers. Act so and you will not incur guilt.
How does providing rules show love?
Therefore, Adonai, our God, when we lie down and when we rise, we will discuss Your statutes, and rejoice in the words of Your Torah and in Your commandments forever.
(ד) שְׁמַ֖ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ יְהֹוָ֥ה ׀ אֶחָֽד׃ (ה) וְאָ֣הַבְתָּ֔ אֵ֖ת יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ בְּכׇל־לְבָבְךָ֥ וּבְכׇל־נַפְשְׁךָ֖ וּבְכׇל־מְאֹדֶֽךָ׃ (ו) וְהָי֞וּ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֗לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָנֹכִ֧י מְצַוְּךָ֛ הַיּ֖וֹם עַל־לְבָבֶֽךָ׃ (ז) וְשִׁנַּנְתָּ֣ם לְבָנֶ֔יךָ וְדִבַּרְתָּ֖ בָּ֑ם בְּשִׁבְתְּךָ֤ בְּבֵיתֶ֙ךָ֙ וּבְלֶכְתְּךָ֣ בַדֶּ֔רֶךְ וּֽבְשׇׁכְבְּךָ֖ וּבְקוּמֶֽךָ׃ (ח) וּקְשַׁרְתָּ֥ם לְא֖וֹת עַל־יָדֶ֑ךָ וְהָי֥וּ לְטֹטָפֹ֖ת בֵּ֥ין עֵינֶֽיךָ׃ (ט) וּכְתַבְתָּ֛ם עַל־מְזֻז֥וֹת בֵּיתֶ֖ךָ וּבִשְׁעָרֶֽיךָ׃ {ס}
(4) Hear, O Israel! יהוה is our God, יהוה alone. (5) You shall love your God יהוה with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (6) Take to heart these instructions with which I charge you this day. (7) Impress them upon your children. Recite them when you stay at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up. (8) Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them serve as a symbol on your forehead; (9) inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Which parts of the Torah make you rejoice?
For they are our life and they lengthen our days, and on them we will meditate day and night.
(2) rather, the teaching of the LORD is his delight, and he studies that teaching day and night.
How might following what’s in the Torah lead to a living a longer life?
[May] Your love never be removed from us. Blessed are You, Adonai, Who loves God’s people Israel.
Have you ever felt God's love in your life?
Ahava Rabba - The Blessing of Revelation in the Morning Service
What does it mean?
[With] great love You have loved us, Lord, our God; [with] great and abundant compassion have You had compassion upon us.
The Gemara asks: And what is the formula of the other blessing recited before Shema? Rav Yehuda said in the name of Shmuel: An abounding love [ahava rabba]. And Rabbi Elazar instructed his son, Rabbi Pedat, to also say: An abounding love. That was also taught in a baraita: One does not recite: An eternal love [ahavat olam]; rather, one recites: An abounding love.
Ample is Your grace!
Since we have a baraita that says eternal love the law has been established as: For Shacharit Ahavah Rabbah and for Arvit Ahavat Olam...
When have you had compassion on somebody? When has someone had compassion on you?
Our Parent, our Sovereign — for the sake of our ancestors who trusted in You, and whom You taught laws of life, so [too] be gracious to us and teach us.
Our Father, our King! favor us and answer us for we have no accomplishments; deal with us charitably and kindly and deliver us.
When do you want a parent? When do you want a sovereign?
Our Parent, merciful Parent, Who acts with compassion, have compassion on us and put into our hearts [comprehension] to understand and to discern, to listen, to learn and to teach, to keep, to practice, and to fulfill all the words of the teachings in Your Torah with love.
(5) Rabbi Ishmael his son said: He who learns in order to teach, it is granted to him to study and to teach; But he who learns in order to practice, it is granted to him to learn and to teach and to keep and to practice.
Which do you think is greater - study or action? Why?
And enlighten our eyes with Your Torah, and attach our hearts to Your mitzvot, and unify our hearts to love and revere Your Name; and may we never be embarrassed, for in Your holy Name— [which is] great and awe-inspiring— have we trusted; may we delight and rejoice in Your deliverance.
"Torah" can mean the Torah scroll (and its contents) or a more expansive inherited Jewish wisdom and tradition. Which type of Torah resonates with you?
Bring us in peace [wholeness] from the four corners of the earth; and lead us upright to our land. Because, You are the Almighty, Who performs acts of deliverance, and You have chosen us from among all peoples and languages, and You have brought us close to Your great Name in truth; to thank You and unify You with love.
Just like the Cushites
—declares the LORD.
True, I brought Israel up
From the land of Egypt,
But also the Philistines from Caphtor
And the Arameans from Kir.
What does it mean to be chosen? Can more than one people be chosen by God?
Blessed are You, Lord, Who chooses the people Israel with love.
Next we read the Shema and V'Ahvata. Does it make it easier to love God when we learn that God loved us first? Does it matter which love came first?
