First Aliyah (Reading)
During the first two aliyot (readings), let's look for answers to the following questions.
1. Why is this offering called a "burnt" offering?
2. What kind of cattle can be used for the burnt offering?
3. What is the only part of the animal that is not "cooked" on the altar of sacrifice?
Second Aliyah (Reading)
(1) יהוה called to Moses and spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying: (2) Speak to the Israelite people, and say to them: When any of you presents an offering of cattle to יהוה: You shall choose your offering from the herd or from the flock. (3) If your offering is a burnt offering from the herd, you shall make your offering a male without blemish. You shall bring it to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, for acceptance in your behalf before יהוה. (4) You shall lay a hand upon the head of the burnt offering, that it may be acceptable in your behalf, in expiation for you.
Third Aliyah (Reading)
In the next two readings, let's look for answers to these questions:
1. What kinds of animals are being offered here as "burnt offerings?"
2. Why does the Torah give the option of using different types of animals for the burnt offering? Why not just use one type of animal?
Fourth Aliyah (Reading)
Fifth Aliyah
In the next three aliyot (readings) let's look for the answers to these questions.
1. What is a meal offering? How is it different from a burnt offering?
2. What three ways can the meal offering be "cooked?"
3. What "seasoning" must accompany every offering? What food do we still "season" this way (especially at the Shabbat table)?

For Further Discussion:
At the beginning of our Torah portion today, God tells Moses:
When any of you presents an offering of cattle to יהוה: You shall choose your offering from the herd or from the flock.
We might ask, when would a person make an offering? Is this something we have to do, or something we can choose? Rashi explains
IF A MAN OF YOU OFFER [AN OFFERING] — This means, when he offers: Scripture is speaking here of free — will offerings--offerings that are voluntary.
Why do you think the Torah starts with the laws of voluntary offerings instead of the laws about offerings we are required to make?
Does it feel different when you volunteer to do a mitzvah than when you do a mitzvah because you have to?
Why do you think Judaism isn't all voluntary? Why do we need mitzvot (or do we)?
What are some of the mitzvot you would be willing to do voluntarily?
