מַאי שְׁנָא מָעוֹת דְּלָא דְּלָאו הָנֵי מָעוֹת שְׁבַק אֲבוּהוֹן קַרְקַע נָמֵי לָאו הָא קַרְקַע שְׁבַק אֲבוּהוֹן

רַבִּי יוֹסֵי הַגְּלִילִי הֲוָה לֵיהּ אִתְּתָא בִּישָׁא וַהֲוַת מְבַזָּה לֵיהּ קֳדָם תַּלְמִידָיו, אָמְרוּ לֵיהּ תַּלְמִידָיו רַבִּי שְׁבֹק הֲדָא אִתְּתָא מִנָּךְ דְּלֵית הִיא עָבְדָא לִיקָרָךְ, אֲמַר לוֹן פּוּרְנָא דִידָהּ רַב עָלַי וְלֵית בִּי מִשְׁבַּק לָהּ,
Rabbi Yosi had a bad wife who shamed him in front of his students. His students said to him,"Rabbi leave/divorce this wife from yourself for she doesn't work to honour you. He said to them, "Her alimony costs are too great for me, I don't have what would be needed to leave/divorce her.
(ה) הַפּוֹסֵק מָעוֹת לַחֲתָנוֹ וּפָשַׁט לוֹ אֶת הָרֶגֶל, תֵּשֵׁב עַד שֶׁיַּלְבִּין רֹאשָׁהּ. אַדְמוֹן אוֹמֵר, יְכוֹלָה הִיא שֶׁתֹּאמַר, אִלּוּ אֲנִי פָסַקְתִּי לְעַצְמִי, אֵשֵׁב עַד שֶׁיַּלְבִּין רֹאשִׁי. עַכְשָׁיו שֶׁאַבָּא פָסַק עָלַי, מָה אֲנִי יְכוֹלָה לַעֲשׂוֹת, אוֹ כְנֹס אוֹ פְטֹר. אָמַר רַבָּן גַּמְלִיאֵל, רוֹאֶה אֲנִי אֶת דִּבְרֵי אַדְמוֹן:
Admon says that she can say: Had I apportioned the money myself and broken my promise, I would agree to sit until my head turns white. However, now that my father was the one who apportioned the dowry, what can I do? Either marry me or divorce me.
(ה) הָאוֹמֵר, כִּתְבוּ גֵט וּתְנוּ לְאִשְׁתִּי, גָּרְשׁוּהָ, כִּתְבוּ אִגֶּרֶת וּתְנוּ לָהּ, הֲרֵי אֵלּוּ יִכְתְּבוּ וְיִתֵּנוּ. פִּטְרוּהָ, פַּרְנְסוּהָ, עֲשׂוּ לָהּ כַּנִּמּוֹס, עֲשׂוּ לָהּ כָּרָאוּי, לֹא אָמַר כְּלוּם.
(5) With regard to a husband who says to two people: Write a bill of divorce and give it to my wife, or: Divorce her, or: Write a letter and give it to her, they should write the document and give it to her. In each of those cases his intent is clear. He is instructing them to effect her divorce. However, one who said: Release her, or: Sustain her, or: Treat her according to the law [nimus], or: Treat her appropriately, said nothing, as none of these expressions clearly expresses his desire to divorce his wife.
גְּמָ׳ תָּנוּ רַבָּנַן שַׁלְּחוּהָ שִׁבְקוּהָ תָּרְכוּהָ הֲרֵי אֵלּוּ יִכְתְּבוּ וְיִתְּנוּ
The Sages taught that if the husband said: Send her, or: Separate her, or: Send her off, then all of these expressions convey his will to divorce her, and consequently, they should write the bill of divorce and give it to her.
