אָמַר רִבִּי אָחָא שְׁלֹשָׁה דְּבָרִים נֶאֶמְרוּ בְּכוֹס שֶׁל בְּרָכָה מָלֵא. עִיטּוּר. וּמוּדָּח. וּשְׁלָשְׁתָּן בְּפָסוּק אֶחָד נַפְתָּלִי שְׂבַע רָצוֹן וּמָלֵא בִּרְכַּת ײ֨. שְׂבַע עִיטּוּר. רָצוֹן מוּדָּח. מָלֵא כְמַשְׁמָעוֹ. אָמַר רִבִּי חֲנִינָא אִם עָשִׂיתָה כֵן מַה כְתִיב תַּמָּן יָם וְדָרוֹם יְרָשָׁה. אַתְּ זוֹכֶה לִירַשׁ הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה וְהָעוֹלָם הַבָּא. אָמַר רִבִּי אֶלְעָזָר כּוֹס פָּגוּם אֵין מְבָֽרְכִין עָלָיו. טָעֲמוֹ פָּֽגְמוֹ. אַתְּ שְׁמַע מִינָּהּ תְּלָת. שְׁמַע מִינָּהּ כּוֹס פָּגוּם אֵין מְבָֽרְכִין עָלָיו. וְצָרִיךְ שֶׁיְהֵא בוֹ כְשֵׁיעוּר. וְטָעֲמוֹ פָּֽגְמוֹ.
Rebbi Aḥa said: Three things were said about the cup of Grace: full, decorated, and washed. All three come from one verse (Deut. 33:23): “Naphtali is satiated with goodwill, full of the blessings of the Eternal.” Satiated - decorated, goodwill - washed, full as its acception. Rebbi Ḥanina said, if you did so, what is written there: “West and South his inheritance,” you merit to inherit this world and the world to come.
Tosfos presents further proof that some of the other ten things that R’ Yochonon does not mention among his four things were practiced by the amoroim. However, from the fact that the amoroim practiced crowning and covering, it appears that they were stringent upon themselves and observed all of the ten things that R’ Zairo said in the name of R’ Abohu. And therefore one should be stringent in all these matters that pertain to the cup of blessing.
One should wash out the cup over which the blessing is recited on the inside and rinse its outside.
It should be filled with undiluted wine. When one reaches the blessing for Eretz Yisrael, one should add a small amount of water so that it will be pleasant to drink.
Conversation should not be made over the cup over which grace is recited. Rather, everyone should remain silent until grace and the blessing of the wine is concluded, and then they should drink.
