(1) [The following events] occurred some time afterward: Naboth the Jezreelite owned a vineyard in Jezreel, adjoining the palace of King Ahab of Samaria. (2) Ahab said to Naboth, “Give me your vineyard, so that I may have it as a vegetable garden, since it is right next to my palace. I will give you a better vineyard in exchange; or, if you prefer, I will pay you the price in money.” (3) But Naboth replied, “GOD forbid that I should give up to you what I have inherited from my fathers!” (4) Ahab went home dispirited and sullen because of the answer that Naboth the Jezreelite had given him: “I will not give up to you what I have inherited from my fathers!” He lay down on his bed and turned away his face, and he would not eat. (5) His wife Jezebel came to him and asked him, “Why are you so dispirited that you won’t eat?” (6) So he told her, “I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and proposed to him, ‘Sell me your vineyard for money, or if you prefer, I’ll give you another vineyard in exchange’; but he answered, ‘I will not give my vineyard to you.’” (7) His wife Jezebel said to him, “Now is the time to show yourself king over Israel. Rise and eat something, and be cheerful; I will get the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite for you.” (8) So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters to the elders and the nobles who lived in the same town with Naboth. (9) In the letters she wrote as follows: “Proclaim a fast and seat Naboth at the front of the assembly. (10) And seat two scoundrels opposite him, and let them testify against him: ‘You have reviled God and king!’ Then take him out and stone him to death.” (11) The people of his town—the elders and nobles who lived in his town—did as Jezebel had instructed them, just as was written in the letters she had sent them: (12) They proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth at the front of the assembly. (13) Then the two scoundrels came and sat down opposite him; and those scoundrels testified against Naboth publicly as follows: “Naboth has reviled God and king.” Then theyathey I.e., the leaders of Naboth’s town (see v. 11), the two scoundrels, and perhaps others; cf. Lev. 24.14; Deut. 17.6–7. took him outside the town and stoned him to death. (14) Word was sent to Jezebel: “Naboth has been stoned to death.” (15) As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab, “Go and take possession of the vineyard that Naboth the Jezreelite refused to sell you for money; for Naboth is no longer alive, he is dead.” (16) When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab set out for the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite to take possession of it. (17) Then the word of GOD came to Elijah the Tishbite: (18) “Go down and confront King Ahab of Israel who [resides] in Samaria. He is now in Naboth’s vineyard; he has gone down there to take possession of it. (19) Say to him, ‘Thus said GOD: Would you murder and take possession? Thus said GOD: In the very place where the dogs lapped up Naboth’s blood, the dogs will lap up your blood too.’” (20) Ahab said to Elijah, “So you have found me, my enemy?” “Yes, I have found you,” he replied. “Because you have committed yourself to doing what is evil in GOD’s sight, (21) I will bring disaster upon you. I will make a clean sweep of you, I will cut off from Israel every male belonging to Ahab, bond and free.bbond and free See note at 14.10. (22) And I will make your house like the House of Jeroboam son of Nebat and like the House of Baasha son of Ahijah, because of the provocation you have caused by leading Israel to sin. (23) And GOD has also spoken concerning Jezebel: ‘The dogs shall devour Jezebel in the fieldcfield So nine Heb. mss. and the parallel 2 Kings 9.36, as well as Targum and other ancient versions. Most texts read here “rampart.” of Jezreel. (24) All of Ahab’s line who die in the town shall be devoured by dogs, and all who die in the open country shall be devoured by the birds of the sky.’” (25) (Indeed, there never was anyone like Ahab, who committed himself to doing what was displeasing to GOD, at the instigation of his wife Jezebel. (26) He acted most abominably, straying after the fetishes just like the Amorites, whom GOD had dispossessed before the Israelites.) (27) When Ahab heard these words, he rent his clothes and put sackcloth on his body. He fasted and lay in sackcloth and walked about subdued. (28) Then the word of GOD came to Elijah the Tishbite: (29) “Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the disaster in his lifetime; I will bring the disaster upon his house in his son’s time.”

(1) The prophecies of Isaiah son of Amoz, who prophesied concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. (2) Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth,
For GOD has spoken:
“I reared children and brought them up—
And they have rebelled against Me! (3) An ox knows its owner,
A donkey its master’s crib:
Israel does not know,
My people takes no thought.” (4) Ah, sinful nation!
People laden with iniquity!
Brood of evildoers!
Depraved children!
They have forsaken GOD,
Spurned the Holy One of Israel,
Turned their backs. (5) Why do you seek further beatings,
That you continue to offend?
Every head is ailing,
And every heart is sick. (6) From head to foot
No spot is sound:
All bruises, and welts,
And festering sores—
Not pressed out, not bound up,
Not softened with oil. (7) Your land is a waste,
Your cities burnt down;
Before your eyes, the yield of your soil
Is consumed by strangers—
A wasteland as overthrown by strangers!aas overthrown by strangers Emendation yields “like Sodom overthrown.” (8) FairbFair Lit. “Daughter.” Zion is left
Like a booth in a vineyard,
Like a hut in a cucumber field,
Like a city beleaguered. (9) Had not GOD of Hosts
Left us some survivors,
We should be like Sodom,
Another Gomorrah. (10) Hear the word of GOD,
You chieftains of Sodom;
Give ear to our God’s instruction,
You folk of Gomorrah! (11) “What need have I of all your sacrifices?”
Says GOD.
“I am sated with burnt offerings of rams,
And suet of fatlings,
And blood of bulls;
And I have no delight
In lambs and he-goats. (12) That you come to appear before Me—
Who asked that of you?
Trample My courts (13) no more;
Bringing oblations is futile,cof you? / Trample My courts no more; / Bringing oblations is futile In contrast to others “To trample My courts? / 13Bring no more vain oblations.”
Incense is offensive to Me.

I cannot abide. (14) Your new moons and fixed seasons
Fill Me with loathing;
They are become a burden to Me,
I cannot endure them. (15) And when you lift up your hands,
I will turn My eyes away from you;
Though you pray at length,
I will not listen.
Your hands are stained with crime— (16) Wash yourselves clean;
Put your evil doings
Away from My sight.
Cease to do evil; (17) Learn to do good.
Devote yourselves to justice;
Aid the wronged.eAid the wronged Meaning of Heb. uncertain.

Be your sins like crimson,
They can turn snow-white;
Be they red as dyed wool,
They can become like fleece.” (19) If, then, you agree and give heed,
You will eat the good things of the earth; (20) But if you refuse and disobey,
You will be devoured [by] the sword.gYou will be devoured [by] the sword Or “you will be fed the sword.” —
For it was GOD who spoke. (21) Alas, she has become a whore,

Where righteousness dwelt—

And cronies of thieves,

And greedy for gifts;
They do not judge the case of the orphan,
And the widow’s cause never reaches them. (24) Assuredly, this is the declaration
Of the Sovereign, GOD of Hosts,
The Mighty One of Israel:
“Ah, I will get satisfaction from My foes;
I will wreak vengeance on My enemies! (25) I will turn My hand against you,

And those who forsake GOD shall perish. (29) Truly, youmyou Heb. “they.” shall be shamed

Because of the gardens you coveted. (30) For you shall be like a terebinth

(1) In the year that King Uzziah died, I beheld my Sovereign seated on a high and lofty throne; and the skirts of God’s robe filled the temple. (2) Seraphs stood in attendance, each with six wings—two covering the face, two covering the body, and two to fly with. (3) And one would call to the other,
“Holy, holy, holy!
GOD of Hosts—
Whose presence fills all the earth!”
(4) The doorpostsadoorposts Meaning of Heb. uncertain. would shake at the sound of the one who called, and the House kept filling with smoke. (5) I cried,
“Woe is me; I am lost!
For I am a man of impure lipsbof impure lips I.e., speaking impiety; cf. 9.16, and contrast “pure of speech [lit. ‘lip’]” in Zeph. 3.9.
And I live among a people
Of impure lips;
Yet my own eyes have beheld
The Sovereign GOD of Hosts.” (6) Then one of the seraphs—who had taken a live coal from the altar with a pair of tongs—flew over to me, (7) touched it to my lips, and declared,
“Now that this has touched your lips,
Your guilt shall depart
And your sin be purged away.”
(8) Then I heard the voice of my Sovereign saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me.” (9) And [God] said, “Go, say to that people:
‘Hear, indeed, but do not understand;
See, indeed, but do not grasp.’ (10) Dull that people’s mind,
Stop its ears,
And seal its eyes—
Lest, seeing with its eyes
And hearing with its ears,
It also grasp with its mind,
And repent and savecsave Lit. “heal.” itself.” (11) I asked, “How long, my Sovereign?” And [God] replied:
“Till towns lie waste without inhabitants
And houses without people,
And the ground lies waste and desolate— (12) For GOD will banish the population—
And deserted sites are many
In the midst of the land.
(13) “But while a tenth part yet remains in it, it shall repent. It shall be ravaged like the terebinth and the oak, of which stumps are left even when they are felled: its stump shall be a holy seed.”
“Holy, holy, holy!

(1) The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. (2) The word of GOD came to him in the days of King Josiah son of Amon of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign, (3) and throughout the days of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah, and until the end of the eleventh year of King Zedekiah son of Josiah of Judah, when Jerusalem went into exile in the fifth month. (4) The word of GOD came to me: (5) Before I created you in the womb, I selected you;
Before you were born, I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet concerning the nations. (6) I replied:
Ah, my Sovereign GOD !
I don’t know how to speak,
For I am still a boy. (7) And GOD said to me:
Do not say, “I am still a boy,”
But go wherever I send you
And speak whatever I command you. (8) Have no fear of them,
For I am with you to deliver you
—declares GOD. (9) GOD reached out and touched my mouth, and GOD said to me: Herewith I put My words into your mouth. (10) See, I appoint you this day
Over nations and kingdoms:
To uproot and to pull down,
To destroy and to overthrow,
To build and to plant.
(11) The word of GOD came to me: What do you see, Jeremiah? I replied: I see a branch of an almond tree.aalmond tree Heb. shaqed. (12) GOD said to me:
You have seen right,
For I am watchfulbwatchful Heb. shoqed. to bring My word to pass. (13) And the word of GOD came to me a second time: What do you see? I replied:
I see a steaming pot,
Tipped away from the north.cTipped away from the north Meaning of Heb. uncertain. (14) And GOD said to me:
From the north shall disaster break loose
Upon all the inhabitants of the land! (15) For I am summoning all the peoples
Of the kingdoms of the north
—declares GOD.
They shall come, and shall each set up a throne
Before the gates of Jerusalem,
Against its walls round about,
And against all the towns of Judah. (16) And I will argue My case against themdthem I.e., Jerusalem and Judah.
For all their wickedness:
They have forsaken Me
And sacrificed to other gods
And worshiped the works of their hands. (17) So you, gird up your loins,
Arise and speak to them
All that I command you.
Do not break down before them,
Lest I break you before them. (18) I make you this day
A fortified city,
And an iron pillar,
And bronze walls
Against the whole land—
Against Judah’s kings and officers,
And against its priests and citizens.ecitizens Lit. “the people of the land.” (19) They will attack you,
But they shall not overcome you;
For I am with you—declares GOD —to save you.

(1) Pashhur son of Immer, the priest who was chief officer of the House of GOD, heard Jeremiah prophesy these things. (2) Pashhur thereupon had Jeremiah flogged and put in the cellacell Meaning of Heb. uncertain. at the Upper Benjamin Gate in the House of GOD. (3) The next day, Pashhur released Jeremiah from the cell.
But Jeremiah said to him, “GOD has named you not Pashhur, but Magor-missabib.bMagor-missabib I.e., “Terror all around”; cf. v. 10. (4) For thus said GOD: I am going to deliver you and all your friends over to terror: they will fall by the sword of their enemies while you look on. I will deliver all Judah into the hands of the king of Babylon; he will exile them to Babylon or put them to the sword. (5) And I will deliver all the wealth, all the riches, and all the prized possessions of this city, and I will also deliver all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hands of their enemies: they shall seize them as plunder and carry them off to Babylon. (6) As for you, Pashhur, and all who live in your house, you shall go into captivity. You shall come to Babylon; there you shall die and there you shall be buried, and so shall all your friends to whom you prophesied falsely.” (7) You enticed me, O ETERNAL One, and I was enticed;
You overpowered me and You prevailed.
I have become a constant laughingstock,
Everyone jeers at me. (8) For every time I speak, I must cry out,
Must shout, “Lawlessness and rapine!”
For the word of GOD causes me
Constant disgrace and contempt. (9) I thought, “I will not mention it,
No more will I speak in God’s name”—
But [the divine word] was like a raging fire in my heart,
Shut up in my bones;
I could not hold it in, I was helpless. (10) I heard the whispers of the crowd—
Terror all around:
“Inform! Let us inform against him!”
All my [supposed] friends
Are waiting for me to stumble:
“Perhaps he can be entrapped,
And we can prevail against him
And take our vengeance on him.” (11) But GOD is with me like a mighty warrior;
Therefore my persecutors shall stumble;
They shall not prevail and shall not succeed.
They shall be utterly shamed
With a humiliation for all time,
Which shall not be forgotten. (12) O GOD of Hosts, You who test the righteous,
Who examine the heart and the mind,
Let me see Your retribution upon them,
For I lay my case before You. (13) Sing unto GOD,
Praise GOD —
Who has rescued the needy
From the hands of evildoers! (14) Accursed be the day
That I was born!
Let not the day be blessed
When my mother bore me! (15) Accursed be the man
Who brought my father the news
And said, “A boy
Is born to you,”
And gave him such joy! (16) Let that man become like the citiescthe cities I.e., Sodom and Gomorrah; cf. Gen. 19.24–25.
That GOD overthrew without relenting!
Let him hear shrieks in the morning
And battle shouts at noontide— (17) Because [God]d[God] Or “he,” i.e., the message-bearer of vv. 15–16. did not kill me before birth
So that my mother might be my grave,
And her womb big [with me] for all time. (18) Why did I ever issue from the womb,
To see misery and woe,
To spend all my days in shame!
