This is a condensed quotation and translation of a teaching of Rebbe Nachman. A bit of "truth in advertising": I condensed based on my own theological preferences and the needs of the community I serve. One of the parts I left out deals with the important role Rebbe Nachman saw for the Tzadik in facilitating their followers' teshuvah. The other section I left out includes a criticism of 'researcher-heretics' (he probably would have included me in that category) and a description of the workings of the "Ba'al-Davar," one of his names for the Heavenly Adversary, the Satan.

For all the mitzvot are called 'counsels,' as in the 613 counsels of the Torah, meaning that they are counsels about how to approach the Blessed One's divinity through them. And, conversely, transgressions (heaven forbid) are the damaging of good counsel, for with them one doesn't know the counsel of how to come to know blessed God. On the contrary, one becomes distant from It and falls into heresies and deceptive beliefs, heaven forbid, according to the nature of the damage and the transgression....
Teshuvah is truly a very great wonder! Since once you've been tripped up by transgressions and haven't been able to fulfill the good and holy counsels, which are the Torah's mitzvot, and have messed up the counsels with the transgressions, how can you now receive counsel to turn in teshuvah? ...
Now the essential thing is faith.... For as long as you have faith, you'll certainly return to blessed God, and so you must bolster yourself with that.... With this you can revive yourself and bolster yourself, since given that I still know that a transgression is a great defect that causes much damage in the upper worlds, it follows that I still have faith! And given that I have faith, I certainly no doubt have hope, for given that I believe that it's possible to mess up, it must certainly be possible to repair also, as our Rabbi of blessed memory said explicitly: If you believe you can mess up, you should be believe that you can repair....
And understand well that you should keep these matters in your heart to follow them truthfully, and to truly have faith in this, for these matters are very deep, and it is impossible in any way to clarify them in writing.
