A Moment of Hebrew
Two sons were born to Ever: the name of the first was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and the name of his brother was Yoktan.
פֶּלֶג peleg (שֹׁרֶשׁ פ.ל.ג)
- Section, part
- Brook, creek (a smaller stream of water that breaks off from a larger one)
מִפְלָגָה (miflagah) = Political party
לְהַפְלִיג (lehaflig) = To set sail
פְּלַג הַמִּנְחָה = Pelag ha-minhah, half of minhah (In halakhah, the day is divided into chunks. Pelag ha-minhah marks the later half of the afternoon; on a Friday, it's the earliest time you can light Shabbat candles.)
כֻּלֵּי עָלְמָא לָא פְלִיגִי (kulei alma la fligi) = No one disagrees (in Aramaic)
Find the Word!
While this שֹׁרֶשׁ (shoresh, root) doesn’t show up in other places in the Torah, it appears several times in Tanakh. One of the most well known is in Tehillim 1:3. Can you find it? Which meaning of the word is there?
