For the leader. Of David. A psalm.O ETERNAL One, You have examined me and know me. When I sit down or stand up You know it;You discern my thoughts from afar. You observe my walking and reclining,and are familiar with all my ways. There is not a word on my tonguebut that You, O ETERNAL One, know it well. You hedge me before and behind;You lay Your hand upon me. It is beyond my knowledge;it is a mystery; I cannot fathom it. Where can I escape from Your spirit?Where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there;if I descend to Sheol, You are there too. If I take wing with the dawnto come to rest on the western horizon, even there Your hand will be guiding me,Your right hand will be holding me fast. If I say, “Surely darkness will conceal me,night will provide me with cover,” darkness is not dark for You;night is as light as day;darkness and light are the same. It was You who created my conscience; You fashioned me in my mother’s womb. I praise You,for I am awesomely, wondrously made;Your work is wonderful;I know it very well. My frame was not concealed from You when I was shaped in a hidden place,knit together in the recesses of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed limbs;they were all recorded in Your book;in due time they were formed,to the very last one of them. How weighty Your thoughts seem to me, O God,how great their number! I count them—they exceed the grains of sand;I end—but am still with You. O God, if You would only slay the wicked—you murderers, away from me!— who invoke You for intrigue,Your enemies who swear by You falsely. O ETERNAL One, You know I hate those who hate You,and loathe Your adversaries. I feel a perfect hatred toward them;I count them my enemies. Examine me, O God, and know my mind;probe me and know my thoughts. See if I have vexatious ways,and guide me in ways everlasting.

(16) All love that depends on a something, [when the] thing ceases, [the] love ceases; and [all love] that does not depend on anything, will never cease. What is an example of love that depended on a something? Such was the love of Amnon for Tamar. And what is an example of love that did not depend on anything? Such was the love of David and Jonathan.

(1) Hallelujah.It is good to chant hymns to our God;it is pleasant to sing glorious praise. (2) The LORD rebuilds Jerusalem;He gathers in the exiles of Israel. (3) He heals their broken hearts,and binds up their wounds. (4) He reckoned the number of the stars;to each He gave its name. (5) Great is our Lord and full of power;His wisdom is beyond reckoning. (6) The LORD gives courage to the lowly,and brings the wicked down to the dust. (7) Sing to the LORD a song of praise,chant a hymn with a lyre to our God, (8) who covers the heavens with clouds,provides rain for the earth,makes mountains put forth grass; (9) who gives the beasts their food,to the raven’s brood what they cry for. (10) He does not prize the strength of horses,nor value the fleetness of men; (11) but the LORD values those who fear Him,those who depend on His faithful care. (12) O Jerusalem, glorify the LORD;praise your God, O Zion! (13) For He made the bars of your gates strong,and blessed your children within you. (14) He endows your realm with well-being,and satisfies you with choice wheat. (15) He sends forth His word to the earth;His command runs swiftly. (16) He lays down snow like fleece,scatters frost like ashes. (17) He tosses down hail like crumbs—who can endure His icy cold? (18) He issues a command—it melts them;He breathes—the waters flow. (19) He issued His commands to Jacob,His statutes and rules to Israel. (20) He did not do so for any other nation;of such rules they know nothing.Hallelujah.
There is nothing so whole as a broken heart...(and nothing more upright than a tilted ladder.)

Rabbi Alexandri teaches, “If the simpleton keeps trying to use broken vessels, it's shameful, but the Holy Blessed One’s vessels are [all] broken ones [and it's not shameful], as it is written ‘Healer of the broken-hearted’ and ‘[Present] with the lowly and suffering...”.”

The Zohar teaches that the human heart is the Ark. And it is known that in the Ark were stored both the Tablets and the Broken Tablets. Similarly, a person's heart must be full of Torah... and similarly, a person's heart must be a broken heart, a beaten heart, so that it can serve as a home for the Shechinah. For the Shechinah [divine presence] only dwells within broken vessels, which are the poor, whose heart is a broken and lowly heart. (1) The first letters of “Zikhru Torat Moshe (be mindful of Moshe’s Torah)” (Malachi 3:22) spell TaMmuZ without the vav. This is because it is then, in Tammuz, that we must elicit mindfulness in order to rectify forgetfulness. For it was then that forgetfulness came into existence; as a result of the Tablets being broken in the month of Tammuz, forgetfulness came into being. As our Sages, of blessed memory, said: Had the first Tablets not been shattered, the Torah would not have been forgotten in Israel (Eruvin 54a).
(2) Thus, the vav is missing from Tammuz, as mentioned above. This is because as a result of the Tablets having been broken, the vav departed. For the Tablets are the aspect of vav, as our Sages, of blessed memory, said: The Tablets were vav handbreadths long by vav handbreadths wide (Bava Batra 14a).

“The Broken Tablets” by Rodger Kamenetz
The broken tablets were also carried in an Ark.
In so far as they represented everything shattered
everything lost. They were the law of broken things.
The leaf torn from the stem in a storm. A cheek touched
in fondness once but now the name forgotten.
How they must have rumbled. Clattered on the way
even carried so carefully through the waste land.
How they must have rattled around until the pieces
broke into pieces. The edges softened
crumbling. Dust collected at the bottom of the ark
Ghosts of old letters. Old laws. In so far
as a law broken is still remembered.
These laws were obeyed.
And in so far as memory preserves the pattern of broken things
these bits of stone were preserved
through many journeys and ruined days
even, they say, into the promised land.

On Anxiety:
Adonai, You abide though all things change. I am anxious and fearful, and I turn my heart to You, looking to You and leaning on Your strength. It is written, “Blessed is the one whose strength is in You.” Bless me now with faith and courage. Help me to feel that You are with me, steadying and sustaining me with the assurance that I am loved. Be with me and bring me hope, that in the days to come, my aspirations may be fulfilled for my good and the good of those I love who depend on me. Banish my fears with the sense that You are always present, to uphold and sustain me, as it is written, “Have no fear, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with the power of My righteousness” (Isaiah 41:10). Amen.

A psalm of David. A song for the dedication of the House.
I extol You, O ETERNAL One,
for You have lifted me up,
and not let my enemies rejoice over me.
O my ETERNAL God,
I cried out to You,
and You healed me.
O ETERNAL One, You brought me up from Sheol,
preserved me from going down into the Pit.
O you faithful of GOD, sing out,
and praise the holy name.
For [God] is angry but a moment,
and when pleased, there is life.
One may lie down weeping at nightfall;
but at dawn there are shouts of joy.
When I was untroubled,
I thought, “I shall never be shaken,”
for You, O ETERNAL One, when You were pleased,
made [me] firm as a mighty mountain.
When You hid Your face,
I was terrified.
I called to You, O ETERNAL One;
to my Sovereign I made appeal,
“What is to be gained from my death,
from my descent into the Pit?
Can dust praise You?
Can it declare Your faithfulness?
Hear, O ETERNAL One, and have mercy on me;
O ETERNAL One, be my help!”
You turned my lament into dancing,
you undid my sackcloth and girded me with joy,
that [my] whole being might sing hymns to You endlessly;
O my ETERNAL God, I will praise You forever.

(1) A maskil of David, while he was in the cave. A prayer. (2) I cry aloud to the LORD; I appeal to the LORD loudly for mercy. (3) I pour out my complaint before Him; I lay my trouble before Him (4) when my spirit fails within me. You know my course; they have laid a trap in the path I walk. (5) Look at my right and see— I have no friend; there is nowhere I can flee, no one cares about me. (6) So I cry to You, O LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, all I have in the land of the living.” (7) Listen to my cry, for I have been brought very low; save me from my pursuers, for they are too strong for me. (8) Free me from prison, that I may praise Your name. The righteous shall glory in me for Your gracious dealings with me.

Reb Zalman's Translations:
20
May YaH answer you when you are overwhelmed;
May you rise above your distress in the name of Jacob’s God.
From that sacred source,
may He send your help to you,
may He support you from Zion,
may He remember all your contributions.
May your whole-hearted devotion give you all the strength you need.
May He grant your heart’s desire;
may all your designs thrive.
We will celebrate your healing;
we will raise flags of gratitude to God.
Yes, may God grant all your needs.
I know now that God will help His anointed,
with power at His right hand, answering him—
from His sacred abode.
So what if they attack with horses and chariots?
All we need to do is mention God’s name and they will be subdued and surrender;
we will rise up and cheer.
YaH, help; King, answer us today, as we call out to You.
Psalm 30
A psalm for a housewarming
composed by David
I acclaim You my God;
You set me free,
so that my foes could not gloat at my troubles.
YaH, my God, I pleaded with You;
You healed me.
YaH, You lifted me from the pit;
from the brink of the grave
You brought me back to Life.
Join me in my song, fellow devotees—
remembering what is sacred, let’s give thanks.
For a moment I felt You angry,
then I felt Life and Acceptance;
though weeping as I fell asleep,
I woke up singing.
You, YaH, made my mountain firm.
I thought I was safe, that I won't ever stumble,
but when You hid Your Face from me, I panicked.
I call to You, YaH!
I plead with You, Adonai!*
What use is there in my death, to go down to ruin?
Can dust appreciate You?
Can it discern Your Truth?
Listen, YaH! Be kind to me! YaH, please help me.
You turned my grieving into a dance of reconciliation;
You took off my rags and wrapped me in joy.
Now Your Glory is my song; I won’t hold back.
YaH, my God, I will ever be grateful!
121
An up song
I scan the hill tops,
looking for those who would help me.
But my real help comes from YaH,
Who constantly creates Heavens and Earth.
Because He never tires, He will not let me falter.
The Protector of Israel is ever alert;
He does not fall asleep.
YaH watches over you,
like one who shades you from heat;
He is right there, at your right hand.
For you— not sun madness by day, not lunacy by night.
YaH will shield you from all harm;
She will care for your spirit.
YaH will protect you, going or coming,
From now on and always.
130
A song for raising consciousness
From the deepest place in me, I call You forth—
YaH, hear what is in my voice;
let Your ear hear my pleading tone.
If You, YaH, were to watch for sins,
Oy, YaH—who could stand it?
Though You are so generous with pardon,
we are too scared to seek it.
Still I hope, YaH— my very soul hopes for it;
please send me Your loving word.
Among the watchers for the dawn,
YaH, am I yearning for Your Grace to end my darkness.
Israel looks to You, YaH; You are so gracious,
YaH, so much do You free us all.
Yes, He will definitely free Israel from all its sins.
142
This is a prayer of insight that David offered when he was hiding in the cave.
I raise my voice to you, YaH;
I cry out loud to YaH and plead.
As I pour out my prayer before You,
I tell of my troubles,
how my spirit wraps itself in anxiety.
You know well the direction I’m going,
and yet I know that on my path they placed a trap.
I call out to You and say—
You are my protector;
You are the One Who gives me a portion in the land of the living.
Listen to my song, for I have been brought very low;
save me from my pursuers, because they are stronger than I.
Draw me forth from my hiding place,
so that I can then come to give thanks to Your Name;
in the presence of the righteous ones—
that would be the kind thing to do for me.
