(1) These are the rules that you shall set before them: (2) When you acquire a Hebrew slave, that person shall serve six years—and shall go free in the seventh year, without payment. (3) If [a male slave] came single, he shall leave single; if he had a wife, his wife shall leave with him. (4) If his master gave him a wife, and she has borne him children, the wife and her children shall belong to the master, and he shall leave alone. (5) But if the slave declares, “I love my master, and my wife and children: I do not wish to go free,” (6) his master shall take him before God.*before God Others “to the judges.” He shall be brought to the door or the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall then remain his master’s slave for life.

(10) Six years you shall sow your land and gather in its yield; (11) but in the seventh you shall let it rest and lie fallow. Let the needy among your people eat of it, and what they leave let the wild beasts eat. You shall do the same with your vineyards and your olive groves.
(8) You shall count off seven weeks of years—seven times seven years—so that the period of seven weeks of years gives you a total of forty-nine years. (9) Then you shall sound the horn loud; in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month—the Day of Atonement—you shall have the horn sounded throughout your land (10) and you shall hallow the fiftieth year. You shall proclaim release*release Others “liberty.” throughout the land for all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee*jubilee Heb. yobel, “ram” or “ram’s horn.” for you: each of you shall return to your holding and each of you shall return to your family.

(39) If your kin under you continue in straits and must be given over to you, do not subject them to the treatment of a slave. (40) Remaining with you as a hired or bound laborer, they shall serve with you only until the jubilee year. (41) Then they, along with any children, shall be free of your authority; they shall go back to their family and return to the ancestral holding.— (42) For they are My servants, whom I freed from the land of Egypt; they may not give themselves over into servitude. (43) You shall not rule over them ruthlessly; you shall fear your God.

(13) The Egyptians ruthlessly imposed slavery upon the Israelites

(44) Such male and female slaves as you may have—it is from the nations round about you that you may acquire male and female slaves. (45) You may also buy them from among the children of aliens resident among you, or from their families that are among you, whom they begot in your land. These shall become your permanent holding:

(54) If not redeemed in any of those ways, that person, along with any children, shall go free in the jubilee year. (55) For it is to Me that the Israelites are servants: they are My servants, whom I freed from the land of Egypt—I, your God יהוה.

For it is to Me that the Israelites are servants - My document (deed of purchase) is of an earlier date.

I am the Eternal Your God - Whoever enslaves them below enslaves, as it were, God above.

(7) And I will take you to be My people, and I will be your God. And you shall know that I, יהוה, am your God who freed you from the labors of the Egyptians.

And I will take you to be My people - And you will be slaves to Me, because it is better for you to be My slaves than to be the slaves of Pharaoh. And I will be your God - I will be your master, and not Pharaoh. And you shall know that I, the Lord, am your God - And you will serve Me willingly, because you will say, it is better to serve the Greatest of Kings, than to serve someone arbitrary, like Pharaoh.

(6) As for the foreigners who are joined to GOD, to render service, and to love GOD’s name, to God's servants— all who keep the sabbath and do not profane it, and who hold fast to My covenant— (7) I will bring them to My sacred mount and let them rejoice in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices shall be welcome on My altar;
For My House shall be called house of prayer for all peoples.”
(8) Thus declares my Sovereign GOD, who gathers the dispersed of Israel: “I will gather still more to those already gathered.”
