The Global Community Torah: FAQs
The Global Community Torah is a digital Torah scroll, collectively “written” by you. Thousands of Jews from countries all over the world have participated in this free project, adding Hebrew letters to the digital scroll.
When you hover your cursor over a given letter, you will see the first name of the person who added it or the first name of an honoree:
Does it cost money to add a letter to the Global Community Torah?
No. Adding a letter is free.
How do I add or dedicate a letter?

2. Select your preferred font from a choice of six unique options, and click 'Save Your Letter.'

If you haven't received an email from us within 24 hours of submitting, or if you need additional assistance finding your letter, please email us at [email protected].
Can I choose my own letter?
At this time, you cannot choose your own letter. The project involves creating a digital Torah chronologically from start to finish. Each community member is assigned a letter based on how many people have added letters before them. For example, the first person to participate in this project received the letter ב in בראשית, the second person received ר in בראשית, etc. While you cannot choose a letter directly, you can cleverly time your participation if you wish; just know that if someone else is choosing a letter at the same time as you, you may receive a different letter from the one that initially appeared on your screen.
How do I zoom in?
Place two fingers on your phone screen or laptop trackpad, and move your fingers away from each other.
What is the map feature?
If you visit torah.sefaria.org/map, you can see the numerous cities from which people have added letters to the Global Community Torah. Locations are anonymous.
What is the goal of the Global Community Torah?
The Global Community Torah is a worldwide effort to connect with each other and collectively re-enact this idea:
(19) Therefore, write down this poem and teach it to the people of Israel; put it in their mouths, in order that this poem may be My witness against the people of Israel.
This verse is the source for the final commandment in the Torah. According to common interpretations of the verse, each and every Jew must write a Torah because every Jew has a stake in the tradition. This commandment has always held a unique resonance for Sefaria.
