(ב) שְׂא֗וּ אֶת־רֹאשׁ֙ כׇּל־עֲדַ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שֵׁמ֔וֹת כׇּל־זָכָ֖ר לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָֽם׃ (ג) מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כׇּל־יֹצֵ֥א צָבָ֖א בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל תִּפְקְד֥וּ אֹתָ֛ם לְצִבְאֹתָ֖ם אַתָּ֥ה וְאַהֲרֹֽן׃ (ד) וְאִתְּכֶ֣ם יִהְי֔וּ אִ֥ישׁ אִ֖ישׁ לַמַּטֶּ֑ה אִ֛ישׁ רֹ֥אשׁ לְבֵית־אֲבֹתָ֖יו הֽוּא׃
(2) Take a census of the whole Israelite company by the clans of its ancestral houses, listing the names, every male, head by head. (3) You and Aaron shall record them by their groups, from the age of twenty years up, all those in Israel who are able to bear arms. (4) Associated with you shall be a participant from each tribe, each one the head of his ancestral house.
(מד) אֵ֣לֶּה הַפְּקֻדִ֡ים אֲשֶׁר֩ פָּקַ֨ד מֹשֶׁ֤ה וְאַהֲרֹן֙ וּנְשִׂיאֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל שְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ר אִ֑ישׁ אִישׁ־אֶחָ֥ד לְבֵית־אֲבֹתָ֖יו הָיֽוּ׃
(44) Those are the accounrings recorded by Moses and Aaron and by the chieftains of Israel, who were twelve in number, one participant from each ancestral house.
(נ) וְאַתָּ֡ה הַפְקֵ֣ד אֶת־הַלְוִיִּם֩ עַל־מִשְׁכַּ֨ן הָעֵדֻ֜ת וְעַ֣ל כׇּל־כֵּלָיו֮ וְעַ֣ל כׇּל־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ֒ הֵ֜מָּה יִשְׂא֤וּ אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּן֙ וְאֶת־כׇּל־כֵּלָ֔יו וְהֵ֖ם יְשָׁרְתֻ֑הוּ וְסָבִ֥יב לַמִּשְׁכָּ֖ן יַחֲנֽוּ׃
The word for census used here is literally head (rosh) here, heads in this weeks parsha play a big part… the counting serves one purpose of uplifting the heads / leaders (שאו את ראש) of each tribe by Hashem naming each one specifically. They were already the leaders of their tribes, but now they have divine authority… later they’re called נשיאי (lifted up ones, literally). And part of the way they have to show their leadership is by taking an accounting of people they’re responsible for, to account for and lift up each head that their authority is over. (Well… the men over 20…)
How does being lfited up as a leader require lifting up the people you are responsible for?
The Leviim, on the other hand, have different tasks of lifting up and accounting. They are meant to lift up/ carry the Mishkan, and account for the things related to the Mishkan. The roots used for these tasks are the same. How is spiritually lifting up both similar and different to lifting up people under one's leadership? How is one lifted up by these holy tasks?
