Sefer Yetzirah, or the "Book of Creation," is a proto-Kabbalistic text concerned with the creation of the universe and the power of the Hebrew language. It is traditionally attributed to the biblical patriarch Abraham, however it was created most likely between the 3rd and 6th centuries CE, with some chapters or verses potentially added in at later dates. This is just a few of its chapters with translations from varying sources, including Rabbi Jill Hammer.
The Story of Creation
(א) בשלשים ושתים נתיבות פליאות חכמה חקק יה יהוה צבאות בשלשה ספרים בספר וספר וספור:
(1) Wisdom's thirty-two marvelous paths YH engraved - the Becoming One who holds many - within three books: tome, tally, and tale.
Questions:
- What can we learn from the verb "engraved" being used here as a metaphor for creation?
- "The Becoming One who holds many" is a powerful epitaph - what does it mean to you?
- Notice that the three books, here translated as tome, tally, and tale to emphasize their alliterative nature, are all from the same root SPR. What do tome, tally, and tale mean and why might the story be structured this way?
(ב) עשר ספירות בלי מה ועשרים ושתים אותיות יסוד שלש אמות ושבע כפולות ושתים עשרה פשוטות:
(2) Ten inscriptions of the void and 22 Foundation Letters: Three Mothers, Seven Doubles, And Twelve Elementals.

- What does it mean for something to be an inscription of the void?

(יד) אלו עשר ספירות בלימה אחת רוח אלהים חיים ורוח מרוח ומים מרוח ואש ממים ורום מעלה ותחת מזרח ומערב וצפון ודרום [בדפוס מנטובה (שכ"ב) הגי' כמ"ש באוצר ה' וברמ"ב]:
(14) These are the ten inscriptions in the void. The first is the breath of the Living God; air from breath and water from air and fire from water, and above and below, east and west, north and south.
Questions
- This creation account is explaining that first there was the breath of G-d, which gave rise to air, which created water, which created fire. Does this sequence make sense? Why might this order be presented?
(ד) עשרים ושתים אותיות יסוד קבועות בגלגל ברל"א שערים וחוזר הגלגל פנים ואחור וזהו סימן לדבר אין בטובה למעלה מענג ואין ברעה למטה מנגע:
(ה) כיצד שקלן והמירן אל"ף עם כלם וכלם עם אל"ף, בי"ת עם כלם וכלם עם בי"ת וחוזרת חלילה נמצא כל היצור וכל הדבור יוצא בשם אחד:
(4) Twenty-two foundation letters: inserted into a wheel with 231 gates. The wheel turns forwards and back. This is a cipher for the word: if for goodness above, it pleases, and if for evil below, it afflicts.
(5) How does one weigh and transmute them? א with all of them and all of them with ב ,א with all of them and all of them with ב, turning round. All which is formed and spoken is found, emerging in one name.

The Mothers
(א) שלש אמות אמ"ש יסודן כף זכות וכף חובה ולשון חק מכריע בינתים [משנה זו כפולה לעיל רפ"ב בדרך אגב וכאן עיקר מקומה (ש"ל)]:
(1) Three Mothers: Alef Mem Shin (אמש) Their foundation is a pan of merit, a pan of liability, and the tongue of decree deciding between them.

(ד) שלש אמות אמ"ש בעולם אויר מים אש [אולי צריך להוסיף שמים ארץ ואויר] שמים נבראו מאש וארץ נבראת ממים [אולי צריך להוסיף ורוח מאויר] ואויר מרוח מכריע בינתים:
(ה) שלש אמות אמ"ש בשנה חום קור ורויה. חום נברא מאש קור נברא ממים ורויה מרוח מכריע בינתים:
(ו) שלש אמות אמ"ש בנפש זכר ונקבה ראש ובטן וגויה. ראש נברא מאש ובטן נברא ממים וגויה מרוח מכריע בינתים:
(4) Three Mothers, AMSh (אמש), in the Universe are air, water, fire. Heaven was created from fire, Earth was created from water, And air from Breath decides between them.
(5) Three Mothers AMSh (אמש) in the Year are the hot, the cold, and the temperate. The hot is created from fire, the cold is created from water, And the temperate, from Breath, decides between them....
(6) Three Mothers AMSh (אמש) in the Body-Soul, male and female, are the head, belly, and chest. The head is created from fire, The belly is created from water and the chest, from breath, decided between them.
Space, Time, and Body-Soul are our three categories to fit all things.
Doubles
(א) שבע כפולות בג"ד כפר"ת (מתנהגות בשתי לשונות), יסודן חיים ושלום וחכמה ועושר חן וזרע וממשלה, ומתנהגות בשתי לשונות ב"בּ ג"גּ ד"דּ כ"כּ פ"פּ ר"רּ ת"תּ תבנית רך וקשה תבנית גבור וחלש כפולות שהן תמורות. תמורת חיים מות תמורת שלום רע תמורת חכמה אולת תמורת עושר עוני תמורת חן כיעור תמורת זרע שממה תמורת ממשלה עבדות:
(1) There were formed seven 'double' letters: ת ,ר ,פ, כ ;ד ,ג ,ב. Each has two voices, either aspirated or softened. These are the foundations of Life, Peace, Riches, Grace, Wisdom, Fruitfulness, and Power. Doubles that are transformations: opposed to Life is Death; to Peace, War; to Riches, Poverty; to Grace, Ugliness; to Wisdom, Ignorance; to Fruitfulness, Sterility; to Power, Slavery.

ואלו הן שבעה כוכבים בעולם חמה נוגה כוכב לבנה שבתאי צדק מאדים. ואלו הן ז' ימים בשנה שבעה ימי בראשית. ושבעה שערים בנפש שתי עינים שתי אזנים ושני נקבי האף והפה.
(12) So now, behold the Stars of our World, the Planets which are Seven; the Sun, Venus, Mercury, the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. The Seven are also the Seven Days of Creation; and the Seven Gateways of the Soul of Man—the two eyes, the two ears, the mouth and the two nostrils.
Elementals
(א) שתים עשרה פשוטות ה' ו' ז', ח' ט' י', ל' נ' ס', ע' צ' ק', יסודן שיחה הרהור הלוך, ראיה שמיעה מעשה, תשמיש ריח שינה, רוגז לעיטה שחוק:
(1) Twelve Elementals: Heh (ה), Vav (ו), Zayin (ז), Chet (ח), Tet (ט), Yud (י), Lamed (ל), Nun (נ), Samekh (ס), Eyin (ע), Tzadi (צ), Kuf (ק). Their foundation is speech, thought, motion, sight, hearing, action, coition, smell, sleep, anger, taste, laughter.
(ב) שתים עשרה פשוטות ה"ו ז"ח ט"י ל"נ ס"ע צ"ק חקקן חצבן שקלן צרפן המירן וצר בהם שנים עשר מזלות בעולם סימן טש"ת סא"ב מע"ק גד"ד. ואלו הן שנים עשר חדשים בשנה ניסן אייר סיון תמוז אב אלול תשרי מרחשון כסלו טבת שבט אדר. ואלו הן שנים עשר מנהיגין בנפש שתי ידים ושתי רגלים שתי כליות טחול כבד מרה המסס קיבה קרקבן.
(2) These twelve letters, He designed, formed, combined, weighed, and changed, and created with them the twelve divisions of the heavens (the zodiac signs), the twelve months of the year, and the twelve important organs of the frame of the human, namely the right and left hands, the right and left feet, the two kidneys, the liver, the gall, the spleen, the intestines, the gullet, and the stomach.
